FYI:

Hi Mark,

Has you probably know there was a lot of talk around NAB about the coverage of the lenses for the 5K sensor installed on the Epic and Scarlet S35. As I understood the image circle has to be at least 32mm for the 2.4:1 scope format (5K) and 28mm for the 16/9 S35 TV format (4K).

I tested all of our lenses on that coverage issue. Here is where they are:

16-42 and 30-80 Optimo DP: both lenses cover 32mm image circle for the full zoom range

15-40 and 26-76 Optimo: both lenses cover 32mm image circle for the full zoom range

17-80 Optimo: covers the 28mm image circle for the full zoom range. Covers the 32mm image circle between 26mm and 80mm focal length

24-290 Optimo: covers the 28mm image circle for the full zoom range. Covers the 32mm image circle between 30mm and 290mm focal length

Best,

Jean-Marc

yeah remember as well.. you will be able to crop down your sensor to match your lenses if they don't fit in the circle at the full 5k..

Of course however, as when you crop inwards your APPARENT focal length increases, so cropping down to squeeze in that super wide last bit of the lens is a little counter-productive.

If that wasn't enough to confuse you, it is a bit of a moot point anyways, as going out to 5k is gonna decrease your APPARENT focal length and make that 25mm lens look more like a 18ish lens anyways at 5k.

which is a great point jarrod. the 'opposite of the 2K' phenomenon. this i actually see as a benefit most of the time, as you will be able to 'go wider' without getting the additional wide lens (14mm or something) in your kit. the 18mm would suddenly be plenty wide enough. and if you HAD to go long on your longest lens, you could 'bump your resolution DOWN to 4K' and make your 135mm act like a 135mm.

I just love the sound of that. bump DOWN to 4K. when will i actually be saying that on set jarred?

i actually loved this 'feature' on the RED ONE, and found it handy when shooting sports. Often we'd shoot sports at 120fps for that awesome look, and even at 24fps, we'd often go down to 2K to make the long end of our optimo more like a 580mm lens. Which was HUGE for the shots it meant we could get.

absolutely.. its nice to have that freedom, specially if you know your deliverable is going to be a lower resolution so there isn't a resolution compromise ( although there are some scaling nuance arguments with that )

Sorry, chief. Cropping does not affect focal length. :frown2:

smart ass... you know exactly what i am saying. God forgive me for leaving out the "Apparent" in front of that... :)

This is great news...!! The 30-80 is fantastic and I look forward to using it, and the 16-42, out to S35 and beyond (on the Epic).

If anyone has the time to report on Ultra Primes (especially from the 12 to 24mm) I would be delighted. Hopefully they cover the widest 16:9 epic frame.

kind regards

I guess what I don't understand is why everyone is excited about a lens system that covers a 32mm image circle for a 5K camera, when it is plainly evident to me (and a lot of other people) that the 5K Epic-X is just a way-station on the road to the 6K Monstro FF35 chip. Thus, unless one has almost unlimited piles of cash, purchasing any lens for a 5K system that has two full stops less of dynamic range than the FF35 seems a bit illogical to me.

Or am I missing something? (Hardly for the first time.)

I think he meant Perceived focal length, of coarse sensor/gate size cannot affect the physical focal length of a lens.

It is not clear that the full value trade in of Red One will be available to any FF35 monstro. (anyone know about this?). And the thin DOF of the larger sensor, and the large collection of existing cinema gear (like the optimos) that can work with the x35 sensor might make it more than a temporary format. For those reasons, I'm hoping for a 30x15mm sensor with the monstro Dynamic Range.

relax, Stevie, there are many of us that are not going the direction of FF35. that format is very specialized, and if we ever have the need for it, we can always rent the "brain". and if it ever becomes "mainstream" we can always "purchase" the "brain". never mind FF35, you should wait for "645", and since you are waiting, why not wait for "617"?

is that enough ""s for you?

If I remember correctly from the data sheet the Monstro only has one more stop that the Mysterium-X, two more than R1 Mysterium.
