  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello everyone,

Clifton Production Services and CoolCameraGear.com have released a new iPhone/iPod touch application called "Pocket DIT" available on the itunes store. (don't worry....its FREE)

Download from iTunes or directly from our website at www.coolcameragear.com under the Products/FREE Software section.

This is your cinematography “cheat sheet" that includes:

•RED ONE virtual menu navigator that allows you to navigate the RED’s
menu system before even approaching the camera.

•Menu search feature lets you locate a particular menu function within
the RED’s menu system

•Depth of field calculator with near focus, far focus, and hyperfocal
distances for 16mm, 35mm, and RED formats

•Transfer time calculator helps you estimate the amount of time it
will take to shuttle files from a source to a destination given your
specific configuration

•Storage calculator allows you to estimate the amount of storage
required for RED footage

•Time calculator helps you estimate the duration of footage given a
particular file size

•Max fps indicator helps you determine the maximum frame-rate/timebase
that can be recorded given a particular RED configuration

•(coming soon) Bluetooth roll/cut control

This is just sort of a side-thing for us so let us know what you think.

Great!

I have downloaded it and started to play with it, very exciting!

Also very good that you noted what build the menu guide is based on.

If I could offer one nitpicking feedback it would be that I would love if the application remembered my last settings whenever I launch it, as I often use the same settings.

When I had a trial version of this, the same day somebody called and asked a question about a buried menu option and my mind went blank, so I grabbed the iPod Touch with this app and found it in just a few seconds from the menu search.
 
How do I work the transfer calculation function?

Post production is our primary business followed by camera accessories so development is a bit slow but we are working on a device that plugs into the camera that will give you bluetooth roll/cut control from you iphone and perhaps other bluetooth devices.

We will work on a build switch for future updates.

Guys, whilst imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, your app is unbelievably similar to mine, which has been out for over 6 months.

I appreciate that you added the menu navigation feature, which is nice, and plan to add some sort of blue tooth control, but did you really have to copy my organization and layouts for the other sections?

Some of the screen layouts are almost exactly the same as mine, even down to the way I organize the tabbed menu on Space/Time (or Store/Time on yours). See attached.

Even though you are offering your app for free, copying mine is not cool.
If you wanted a branded version of my app with some extra features you could have just contacted me directly.

There is no doubt that you have a GREAT application used by many RED users. However, our app is different. What we are working on has a multitude of other features along with the menu guide. However, most of that functionality (like the Bluetooth start/stop) would be using the new SDK (iPhone OS 3.0). The updates will even utilize the magnetic compass (that would be part of new iPhone hardware due out this summer). To get the word out though, we wanted to push the app just to get the first version out. We did use some of the same functionality from your app but we added our own twist to it and regardless, all of that would be upgraded with new elements in the coming weeks.
 
Wow- I thought it looked familiar but running iSee4K side by side makes it crystal clear. Basically you ripped off Ed's application line for line and then removed his FOV calculator. Probably just reverse-engineered his code and changed the colors and graphics a bit?

This is all the more obvious by your 'menu simulator'- the only thing that's markedly different- being wedged into a banner ad for your website rather than properly integrated into the application like the rest of the commands. And all that is is a series of hierarchical menus, which is like the most basic of iPhone programming. If it were a simulation of the way the menus actually looked and acted on the camera I'd be a lot more impressed but the way you have it implemented could not have taken more than 10 minutes to put together.

You ought to be a bit ashamed of yourself Raffi for copying someone else's application and then turning around and saying your app is different because of all the 'future' features you have in mind. No doubt that's while you learn iPhone application programming better. Did you honestly think no one would notice or did you just not care? And why the rush to market this app especially as it's free:

That's one product I now have little interest in if promoting it involves stealing other folk's ideas....

Mate, you used exactly the same functionality.
Your 'twist' appears to be your menu, your logo and some new features you are adding in the future.

I hope so. I don't mind competition, it's plagiarism I can't stand.

Also, I haven't got an iphone in front of me, but can some one tell me if the store/time results from their app match mine exactly?

EDIT:
Raffi would you care to explain why your apps store/time results match mine? Seeing as my calculations are based on personal tests I carried out on my RED, and not published data?

Check out any word processing program. They all look and act pretty much the same, because that is the obvious way of writing on a computer. Graphics programs? Same deal. Where they differ is in the level of polish they have and whatever new and innovative techniques they bring forth.

I have used my paid-for copy of Ed's app for months now and it is fantastic. However, I don't think we should be on here discouraging others from building software that supports the Red!

Hi Brent, I agree with you to a certain extent, but when someone uses the exact same data, the same layout, and copies arbitrary features like adding "7.5% for high detail" it stops being the case.

Just look at the different implementations of all the DOF apps in the photography app section, all use the same principles and methods, but all have different ways of adding the data and displaying it.

Or, for example take my app and pCam; they do many of the same things, but in very different ways. Or Monkey Extract vs. Crimson vs. ClipFinder.

I sincerely hope that is not what you think I am doing.
I gave my app away for free in part to encourage others to make software for the RED.

However, what I do want to discourage is the blatant copying of a piece of software, to use as a personal marketing tool.
