  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I WAS JUST KNOCKED OUT CAIL
Which shots were yours ?
Blustery day in Melbourne today

1:42-1:44 Man walking in forest
2:19-2:22 Tracking shot down river

Both from Van Diemen's Land (link)

And Michael, thanks for the reply - I totally understand but it was a bit of a let down not seeing the harsh grade I'm used to seeing on that forest shot :)

First off: wow! Some very beautiful clips in this reel.

I was wondering what the 'jittering' effect in some of the panning shots and cars driving by is... Is that because of H.264 compression, or playback issues on my machine (MBP hooked up to a 30" cinema display)? Also, in the final clip (don't vote) it looks like there is some sort of ghosting effect during rapid movements...

Can someone explain what I'm seeing?

Thanks!

Tim

Ps3

Ps3

The pass through selections when importing from QT Pro are for MPEG-4 compressions only, both audio and video. Jarred (or somebody else) chose to use AIFF for the audio.
Go ahead and re-encode the audio to AAC, that newly created MP4-wrapped QT will play perfectly fine now on your PS3.

Corey

thanks Corey...I will try that.

No doubt this clip looks great on a computer screen but if you can borrow a friends Apple TV to watch it on a big screen I highly recommend it.
The range of the RED suddenly becomes very clear and very impressive.

jitter on pans - high shutter speed?

The authors of the clips can say for sure, but it looks like some clips have a high shutter speed set. That will give you jittery movement. It might have been done for some effect, to extract sharper stills, or by necessity on a sunny day if they didn't have the proper ND filter.

Mine is smooth as glass... maybe your system? I'm viewing on a dual i7 core Mac Pro and 30" Cinema Display. I couldn't be more proud of the footage in this reel.

new or old MBP ? if you are using an old macbook pro hooked up to the 30" its a pretty high bitrate of H.264 to be viewing on that old laptop hardware.. might be taxing your system.

Just a possibility.

Thanks guys. It's a 2007 model (2,4ghz, 4gb), so that would probably qualify as old, even though it still feels new.. :) Jarred, you reckon that's the case?

And to Jim: of course it looks great! My remark wasn't meant as a negative comment; just to learn if and what's not right with my viewing methods. Red One doesn't fit my budget, but I definately will hop on the Red train when Scarlet gets out. Reading the board, I can say I'm lucky having a wife that's as crazy about what you guys are doing as I am! :)

Will try the new Mac Pro at work today to see if the problem disappears.

Thanks,

Tim

One interesting thing I find about it is that it all feels very similar. It all seem to be graded the same, from the pop video to the films to the nature documentary. I love the look, I am just surprised that no one has graded the stuff with that bleach-out look that been so much in vogue. Maybe this is just the new in look.

Plastercity did an incredible job on the grade.. to match the entire reel together.

That is just one of those hidden benefits of capturing everything RAW... even though some of the clips in the shot may of been heavily processed for its intended application quite differently, when Plastercity gets all the raw files and throws them all together for the online, they can click the reset button and make a common grade.

I keep the reel on my Mac Book Pro desktop (newer version) and play it on my 30" Cinema Display for inspiration. Truly amazing snapshot in history of a revolution that has only begun.
