Ok, I was proven correct. Yes, there are a bunch of new primes at NAB, but the only wide zoom was, like I said, the Angenieux 16-42 (available late June/July). Mind you, great lens, but lists at $21,000, and they don't discount.

The next thing is the re-housed 11-16 Tokina seen elsewhere on reduser for $10,500, which sounds really great, but, when it is available, we have to see how good it is, so, for now, it remains unproven (i am sure the glass is great, we have to wait and see about the re-housing), and, really, it has a different purpose altogether, it's really just for really wide shots. (remember, new things like these usually have bugs that need to be worked out).

Sure, there is the RED 18-50, which is great for the money, but not as good as the proven Century 17-35 (does not hold focus all the way through, i hear).

So, still, if you like to shoot on the shoulder or on a steadycam, the 17-35 is still the best option out there.

Lucky for those of you who might be interested, it is still here. $10,900, from the original $15,000. still new, still unused, and still with a full year manufacturer's warranty (not that it will need it, they have a long history of being durable lenses).

So, if you shoot handheld and want a small, light, dependable, well built and very sharp lens that covers the perfect range for this kind of work, please check this baby out.

Thank you.

"The next thing is the re-housed 11-16 Tokina seen elsewhere on reduser for $10,500"

i think you mean the rehoused/redesigned Nikon 14-24mm for 10,500 (extremely sharp lens thru full range) ...

the Tokina your refer to 11-16 i believe is modified ( & PL ) and priced approx $3200 ...

You are proven wrong. No one is talking about these, but Fuji has very quietly announced the development of PL mount lenses.

Those lenses are Huge, and expensive. Mostly Huge. Really really big. Not going on steadicam.

meryem, yes, i do know about the fujinons, i saw them at NAB, i just did not see any way to compare my lens to those, apples and oranges.

donatello, thanks, yes, i wrote this with little sleep, i got those two confused. the nikon is the one for $10,500, the tokina is the one for $3,500, or something like that. They are still way wider but don't zoom in as much, so it is a different range, different use, i would think.

the mechanics on the re-housed 14-24 look very similar to mine in the photos, which makes me think that it will be a nice lens (remains to be confirmed). one thing i really like about the 17-35 is that i can put a series 9 filter on it, making it possible to use without a matte box and still protect the front element, and that saves weight.

but the angenieux still beats it hands down: probably better picture (waits to be seen, but likely), longer range (16 vs 17 to 42 vs 35), but bigger, heavier and twice the price, so, if you don't want to spend the money for the rouge, think of this lens as the next best thing.

lens is still available

New price is $10,500. still new, still under full one year warranty.
