Hi Guys,

I'm starting this thread to answer any questions you might have about Monkey Extract - specific workflows, color settings, render farm questions, and general Red advice.

The good folk from the forum also have the knowledge to help out, so feel free to ask questions here.

Thanks,

Hey there...
Guess I'll jump right in. I just downloaded the newest version of RM. I have a CMX3600 EDL that was output by Premiere which you will see below. My folder of .r3d files that are untouched or renamed in anyway.

When I use the Render RED Footage function after picking the r3d folder to be drilled and my corresponding edl it tells me:

"Unable to find any matching footage" "Your file contained 104 edits and 101 R3D files were found - 0 matches

I tried changing to Edgecode and back again, but to no avail.
Any suggestions before I buy this?

Here's the EDL

Hi Shane,

Just looking at your EDL, and the timecodes don't appear to be correct.

The four timecode numbers on the end should be similar to this:
001 B006_C00 V C 00:01:23:04 00:01:23:04 00:01:23:04 00:01:23:04

Your EDL has this:
001 B006_C00 V C 1221066 1221127 0 61

They look like frame numbers and not timecode numbers.

Is it possible you exported an EDL that was not in the CMX3600 format? What was the editing platform?

Hi, we are using monkey extract as part of our Avid=> smoke workflow.

We are currenty doing this workflow:

Avid=>CMX3600=>Monkey Extract=>.DPX + new EDL=>Smoke

We want to work in redcine to do a correction on our clips from the offline before they are output as .DPX. How do we work that into the equation? The flash screen says 'send footage to redcine' but we haven't been able to iron it out.

Any details would be great!

Hi Phillip,

Unfortunately this feature is still in development and shouldn't have made it on to the splash screen at the start (a bit of a slip on our part). It will be happening but is still at least a few weeks away I believe.

I'll let you know once it is complete.

I will open up premiere and have a look-see and I will get back to you as why that has happened - thanks for looking... Talk soon

Very simple fix:
Make sure your "Project Settings" are set to "Timecode" and NOT "Frames

Cheers...
Great Software Nigel!

Here's the new EDL from premiere.

OK so this still didn't match properly. Here' the messages I recieved

"Your input file contained 104 edits.
101 R3D files were found.
0 matches" Try again using edgecode

(I am not missing any r3ds)

I agree to that - then I get this:

"Fragment: 01:10:33:08 01:10:34:11
Only Partial Matches (1) for 013 Wonder.d V C 01:10:33:08 01:10:35:01 00:00:21:21 00:00:23:14"
It will render my entire timeline, but is missing some 300 DPXs

Any thought's??

Nigel, I was wondering if you would consider a new feature to be added to the Copy module. What I would like to be able to do is create folders with aliases rather than do a full copy of the R3d files. In other words, create a folder hierarchy much like what you do for DPX rendering (basically, folders based on reel number, like "A001"), but populate them with aliases that point to the original RDC folders. Feel free to send me a PM if you want to know more about why I'm requesting this.

Hi Shane,

The "partial matches" error pops up when some of the frames requested by an EDL edit are matched but not others. Usually this is a symptom of something else wrong though.

It certainly seems that your EDL is referencing edgecode... overall I can't see any problems in your EDL.

Can you please send me the monkeybase.dat file that appears in your R3D source directory (you can send to support@rubbermonkey.co.nz). This will show me what you are trying to match to and I'll be able to look into it further.

Thanks
Craig

Hey Nigel, just got Monkey Extract - I'm doing a few tests and going from FCP via XML to Monkey Extract - DPX - Color. - Only problem is DPX's generated from Monkey don't play at all in Color. They're only the first frame. QT's exported (Aja 10 Bit Log) are the length of clip, but a single frame. How can I fix this?

that's a strange one.

are the actual dpx files all the same frame if you open them in an image viewer?

do the dpx frames rendered have sequential frame numbers? if so, can you manually import one of the clips in color, or is it the same problem?

what happens when you try an EDL for rendering?

what method are you using to get the project into color?

The DPX's are ok outside of Color.

I can bring them in one by one into Color.
I started doing an EDL, but it seemed to be much slower than a XML.
So I canceled it, as I needed to set a Reel to render over night.
I'm exporting a XML from Final Cut after I've broken it down into reels.
I'm including screenshots of my settings.
After it extracts the DPX's from the R3D's
I'm taking the XML Generated by Monkey Extract and open it in Color.
The DPX's don't play.
I'm connected to a SAN via Fibre (2gig). Our DPX's should play realtime.
What seems to happen is shows the first frame of video only. It happens on every shot. I really do not want to rebuild each reel. I spoke with Craig and he said FCP XML is pissy with image seq's. Your thoughts?

Great Craig

here's what you asked for http://unitedsaints.com/temp/WonderEDL_DAT_FOLDERLIST.zip

I can bring them in one by one into Color.

when you load them into color one clip at a time, they play correctly?
If so, then the problem would seem to be related to the color import.

I started doing an EDL, but it seemed to be much slower than a XML.

You could try exporting an EDL from FCP, then loading that into Monkey Extract. Choose to select which clips to render, and un-tick them all. Hit go, and a new EDL will be created. Try loading that EDL into color and let me know what happens.

So we are still working on a tandem Monkey Extract/RedCine workflow and we are trying to match filenames so the EDL can look at either set of DPX's.

The files we get out of Rubber Monkey look like this:

A002_C001_04027S.1531729.DPX

The files we get out of RedCine look like this:

E001_A002_C001_04027S.1531729.DPX

But the E001 character changes with every clip, is there a way to build that into the Monkey Extract name?

Thanks!

also, if there is a better workflow I would love to hear it.

Nigel, So I figured a workaround. I'm still exporting XML's from my locked picture and running it through Monkey Extract. Then opening the XML generated by monkey in Color. What I figured is Color isn't updating the DPX file Sequence and all I have to do is relink each shot. It's a pain but better than rebuilding the whole sequence. I've checked frame accuracy and it seems to be great. Same image at the same TC. So far so good.

E001_A002_C001_04027S.1531729.DPX

Hmmm. This is new. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the E001 characters are?

You can add anything you want to the monkey file names, but I'm not sure it would be helpful in this instance. What are you doing with the rendered footage, what platform are you importing it into?

Sounds like an issue with the generated XML. Can you send the before and after XMLs to craig at rubbermonkey.co.nz, and he can look into it for you.
