A total of 12 cameras, consisting of 10 Red One 4K cameras and 2 Sony full HD cameras were used on the "Journey" concert in Manila Philippines mid Mar 2009.

Veteran Red owner operators Steve Gibby (Red SN prototype "London" and SN 0008), Blair Paulsen (Red SN 17 & 19), and Champe Barton DIT (Red SN 216) generously shared their wealth of Red expertise to me and 7 Manila based cameramen who operated another five (5) Red One 4K cameras and 2 Sony HD cameras.

Thru R.S. Video & Film and RSVP Film Studios, some 50 top local crews (cameramen, TDs, DITs, crane operators, coordinators, technicians, electricians, grips, silent genny operators, etc.) were deployed. Director: Eli Tishberg, Producer: Dan Barnett of Wizard Ent, LD: Jeff Ravitz. Jib operator: Dave Hilmer. Between these "dream team" guys we've got: Superbowl 2009, Bruce Springstein, Grammy Awards, American Music Award, Bon Jovi, Jimmy Buffet, Bee Gees, Celine Dion, VH1, MTVs, and many more credits.

In addition to the five (5) Red One 4K cameras (with much higher SN: 675-5908), and 2 Sony HD cameras we supplied in Manila , including a Red One 4K camera from Ricky Lau of Hong Kong, we also supplied a Thoma TR3 remote head on a 36' Panther Pegasus crane, Jimmy Jib, Panther dollys on long tracks, Steadicam, Optimo 24-290 mm zoom lenses, Zeiss Master primes, Red zoom lenses, Panasonic 50" plasma monitors, crystal gennys, etc.

many thanks to everyone who made this "first 10 Red cam concert" a success, Anyone know of any concert using 10 Red One 4K cameras? Or are we the first?

I think you are the first, I shot Sirens of TI with only SIX :( he he, but the Nike commercial sure did use a S^$##^@ Load of RED ONE cameras.

Please say Hi to Steve for me and his lovely lady Pamala, sorry that I couldn't provide him the Birger mount as promise, it was not in my hands.

Can't weight to see some of the footage, as well as the Behind the scene stuff and off course Pamal's pics of the event.

ciao

Editing a 10 Red cam concert

Editing a 10 Red cam concert

i bet the editor of all that footage is really loving life right now

:)

The 10 Red One 4K cameras were all jam synced. The 10 time lines should quickly line up quite nicely. I know the editor will probably not complain due to lack of materials nor angles.

great job boys!!!!

i am sure more to come!!!

blair, did you bring your truck?

Great work was done on this Journey concert by the entire team! It was a pleasure to work with them as a DP and one of the stage front shoulder held cameramen. This was truly a "no jerks" crew - everyone really knew their craft, was tenacious in figuring out the production needs, and had a good sense of humor!

I've worked with a lot of crews in my career - but I have to say this was one of my very favorite crews! Everyone, the EP (Dan Barnett), director (Eli Tishberg), and all other crew are way cool people who have a passion for their craft - and it showed.

The Journey management watching the show over the director's shoulder in video village kept saying how stunned they were with the quality of footage from the RED cameras - and how they were impressed with the professionalism of the crew. Beyond recording each camera to RED Drives, we also piped a hardlined 720p feed from each camera into the control room to be switched live to the giant iMag screen, on the stage behind the band - eye candy for the 35,000 stoked fans. Very cool I'd say...

Oli Laperal, who started this thread, is a great guy who owns an unbelievably well stocked film & TV production equipment company in Manila, RSVP Films. His staff is very professional, and really know their work well - a pleasure to work with for sure. I recommend RSVP Films highly for anyone looking for production crew and equipment in Asia.

I helped the DIT guys backup and verify the footage for the concert - all operators serious cranked out killer footage. We shot in 4k HD - and the footage is simply stunning!

My wife Pam was the staff stills photographer. With her Canon 5D she nailed some seriously cool shots of the pre-production, Journey performing, and our crew at work. I'll be writing a magazine article about the production, and her pics will really enhance it. She did 35mm stills for Ketch's Las Vegas production and did really well there too.

The crew on this production was from Florida, New York, California, and the Philippines - great diversity.

Journey absolutely rocked the place! I've always liked their music. It was really cool to shoot them with RED. The energy of their set was unreal! Everything came together for a truly surreal experience. I've been involved with TV and film production of many bands over the years (3 Dog Night, War, Common Sense, Burning Spear, and many others), but I have to say this is now my new favorite music production I've been involved with.

I believe the DVD of this concert will start selling sometime later this year. Check it out!

Some gigs you remember for a long time - and this was definitely on of those - and me and Pam were way stoked to be a part of it. We return from Manila to California tomorrow, but we can't wait to return to the Philippines sometime to do some more production. The Filipinos are genuinely friendly...

poor Sony HD cameras.

poor Sony HD cameras.

Hopefully they are planning a 7.1 Blueray!

Too bad about the 2 Sony cameras! :glare:

Yup, we did not even bother recording whatever was shot on the Sony HD cameras. Why bother with 2 (Sony) Chevys, when you have 10 (Red) Ferraris?

Looks like someone on that pic just couldn't put the camera down. :-)

Great work, guys.

LOL - the Sony cameras were just used as part of the live switch for the iMag big screen - and won't be used for the show cut.

Ah...that would be me on the back row holding a Canon HV10 documenting the jubilation...even though I just finished a few hours shoulder holding a RED for the concert! Can't seem to go anywhere without a camera in my hand. I'm sure a lot of you here know the feeling. Horses for courses, thus the HV10 for quick documenting. :)

I knew it was you, that's why I said it. :-)
True love for shooting...

Oh yeah...

Can't wait for Scarlet.

The energy of the band and crowd was ridiculous. They went for 2.5 hours! Thank the gods for my ET Mantis. I am not a very big guy, I'm out of shape and I'm pushing 50 but thanks to the Mantis I was able to shoot off the shoulder non-stop for 2.5 hours in a virtual steam bath.

Disclaimer - I do not work for ET but I have done some beta testing for them.

I totally agree with your post Blair. It was physically difficult for us shoulder held camera operators, but IMO the ET Mantis made it possible. The same ET disclaimer you wrote applies to me also - I've never worked for them, but I have beta tested a lot of their accessories.

BTW - as the DP who recommended you to the producer for this Manila gig, thank you for coming through with truly professional work and results - but then again I expected that from you, a seasoned pro who is also highly experienced with RED One.

ex1 and 3 repping!

We shot 4k HD with all the RED One cameras used on this project. Why? Because when 4k HD, which is mathematically at acquisition (pre-bayer) four times the resolution of 1080p, and the oversampling you get reducing 4k HD down to 1080p makes for gorgeous, chroma saturated footage - and that makes for a much better looking end product (HDTV, BluRay, DVD) than any Ex1 or EX3 could ever come close to generating. An EX1 and EX3 can't shoot 4k HD RAW, so they were never considered.

Yes, we could have used EX1 or EX3 cameras for the whole show and had an easier time shoulder held - but the end product quality hit in resolution, oversampling, and quality lens options ruled out the EX1 or EX3 for the show cut.

We needed two extra cameras at the event to shoot just for the iMag big screen live switching, and both of those used were EX3 cameras. They did well for that, but as a DP for the production I never even considered recommending them for the show that would be cut in post for the end product.

EX1 and EX3 are fine cameras for what they are - but not even close to being in the league of RED One. No sense eating hamburger when you can eat steak...:-)

For the show cut we went for quality (RED One cameras) all the way...a top-quality band like Journey definitely deserved that.
