  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

666X 64GB CF card!

Yea, but what's the price going to be?

64GB sounds great though! I'd get a few of those and shoot P2 style. Four of these means 2hs 40min of 4k RR36, right?

In the meantime I saw that the Lexar 300X 8GB can currently be bought for less than $50. Unfortunately the rebate is only available in the US.
It's too bad they don't allow for 4K 16:9 RC36, otherwise they make for a great low cost option.

WOW! That would be perfect if it allows for 4k 16:9 RC36- 64GB is the right size for me! It looks like we'll have to wait until April to see if they'll work with the Red...

I have no idea what the actual specs are required for RC36. But I would think that a 666x speed card would have enough head room for 4k 16:9 RC36- aren't the Red 16GB cards 333x? (I do realize that there is a difference between sustained rates and peak rates.)

Such a lovely card!

I somehow feel this competes directly with the redram....

But Boy, I surely hope it works with red 4K 16/9 rc36, and that it wont cost $4500.
Surely it wont be as stable as the redram tough!

The future is solid state recording, to have a rotating drive on a moving camera is just silly when put in perspective. Hope RED will allow all CF to work with 4k RC36. To deny new better tech is starting so smell like ... sony :)

RED will allow it to work if it passes their stress testing.

I'm highly skeptical of this card. Considering the previous 500X attempt by Pretec are near impossible to actually buy and they only score the 500X in randomly intermittent bursts.

OTOH, if this card does work and is available for under $1500, then I sense there will be a fire-sale on RED-RAM, mine included.

Jim once said they created the flash cards cause others had not developed as quickly as he had hoped.

I trust him when he says this and I have no doubt that once the cards get "up to speed" then RED will be as happy about it as anyone.

What does Red have to say about CFast?
Are there any plans for these?

Red might have this to say

Red might have this to say

There are people out there that are getting what they consider to be images that are "better than 35mm film" (PJ, SS, Liman, Knowing, Book of Eli, others) and other people that are getting images "just better than 16mm". Is it the camera?

The 1st "trained professionals" that hacked our pre-build 16 code and debayered an r3d file brutally butchered the debayer. So you might imagine our reluctance to open up the SDK all the way until we can help the industry get it right. Long term, it is in everyone's best interest to open all the doors. But Graeme didn't figure out the best way in one day. We still are making tweaks to the debayer.

As for the costs of RED post process, please consider that the camera was released 16 months ago. It is not surprising that it will take just a bit of time to streamline a post workflow. 12 months ago, Apple was working on it. Today... Apple, Adobe, Avid, Autodesk, Quantel and many others are working on it. Apple just release a tower that is twice as fast as their previous model. 8GB cards are now 16GB cards going to 128GB. It seems reasonable to expect that a digital post workflow for RED has a much better chance of improving relative to a film workflow.

With the release of Scarlet and EPIC, many things we didn't get right the 1st time will be corrected. DNR will increase. Data rates go up (compression down). You have many more REDCODE choices. They will have more resolution in a smaller box. The system is more modular... completely modular. Improvements are being made in large chunks... not the final evolution of a 100 year old technology.

We have learned a lot in a short period of time... including the fact that we have a lot more to learn. But to say emphatically that it "just flat costs more to shoot and post RED to get less quality" seems to point more to the person that says that than reality.

"It is no longer cool to dump oil from your car down the drain. It seems reasonable that the eco-unfriendly world of film will some day have run its course. The day of digital being better, faster and cleaner is approaching, mercifully. I support all competitors that help move that day up."

Which CF module on the Red do we need? The first one that worked for the 8GB doesnt work for the 16GB, right? so it will not work for the 64GB. Will the the one that works with the 16GB will work for the 64GB?

We don't know. The new CF module is required to support the data rates of the faster 16GB cards, which are roughly 550X, if I remember Deanan's comments correctly. So maybe the module will support faster cards, maybe it won't.
