  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's been a while...

We're supposed to be seeing these camera's in the summer/fall and we haven't really had any updates on them...I mean, November was a huge announcement, and the December announcement changed a few things...But we want to start knowing a little more.

I hope this doesn't come across as annoying because well, I understand you RED people are hard at work getting camera's out and making the new camera's and everything. :) But I'd like to hear a little more of what's going on outside of "certain production delays aren't delaying the camera's releases"...Know what I mean? What are the accessories potential price? What all is coming with the scarlet all in one package? Any details on the mini red primes price range? etc?

I'm really looking forward to getting a scarlet!

I second to that :)

Really would love to know - the base production package.

And how they all connect together.

Yes, it would be nice to know if our camera is going to get the audio upgrade before the EPIC trade-in/upgrade comes through. I mean...Summer fast approaches and we haven't heard anything about our number being close... At some point, RED should just ask people if they're going to upgrade to EPIC. We probably won't even bother sending ours back for upgrades if they stay on schedule with EPIC.

You are right it is annoying. :sarcasm:

Did you guys miss this post on Feb 3rd?

Lots of clues progress updates here and excitement on Redray...

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25850

and I would not waste your time past the first page or so.

it gets awfully political...

Was there any details on Red Ray? Cause if there was anything other than the mention hat it will be awesome I missed it. What page? Not on the first.

That Feb 3rd update was more like "Hey guys, everything is cool." I really appreciate that, though I agree, it'd be great to see some new specs or some pics or something. But hey, they're working hard. Hopefully too hard to be wasting time on "annoying" update requests. :)

It's not a simple request for updates. My motivation for updates wasn't simply to get some information to fulfill my desires to have anything that Red is willing to show! I'm actually wondering --

I want to get a camera, and the new JVC camera is starting to look pretty attractive if we aren't going to see a neato Scarlet package coming out for a long, long time. If the Scarlet all in one package is a great deal I'm willing to hold off for a while but only so long, and the JVC camera is coming out in April.

It's not just a fanboy begging for details, I'm actually wanting to make a purchase!

So yeah, it might be annoying, but to those of you who are all emo about it, RAH! :)

Keep on waiting. It will take a long while. I bet it won't be as easy as said to put the power of Red One into a tiny space. We just have to wait, wait and wait some more.

Well mr patient, there are people on here who put down $1000 Deposits and then waited 3 years for a camera... so forgive them for wanting to get all emo on your newbie ass...(im not one of them)

But you are not the first person who has "threatened to buy another camera"
if Red "doesnt hurry up on Scarlett"..

This tactic is kind of a like how a 5 year old negotiates for more ice cream..

call me crazy, but I am wiling to bet this company wants to ship their new products more urgently than you want to buy one...

I suggest you go buy the camera from the JAPANESE VICTOR CORP... think of all the sleep you will get knowing you wont have to wait for anything from RED.

OR, you can quit whining and maybe spend the time learning workflows and asking David Mullen questions about Cinematography and/or networking with the cool people on here who helped bring RED to where it is.

I didn't think the OP was whining ... then to compare him to 5 year old, then to say he was threatening Red that he would buy a JVC if they didn't hurry up....

The OP prefaced his question with "I hope this doesn't come across... blah blah" It's sad that he even needs to preface, but I know that this board is very quick to be mean to the unconverted.

I think lots of folks are trying to put together their short term gear purchase plans. Nothing threatening about it. I bet everyone would like some more info on delivery schedule.

Why so harsh?

my guess is that red is being very cautious this time around in regard to release dates. the red one was oft delayed (usually because they were drastically improving it) and i'm sure it's a mess they don't feel like cleaning up twice. i'd rather it be done 'right" than done 'right now'.

that said. i wouldn't get the jvc. it will be obsolete when scarlet hits (by a mile) and you'll be wishing that money went toward the scarlet. i'd find a used HVX or something in the meantime.

my HVX200A will be available for sale before Scarlet somes out, let me know:bye2:

Some used HVX's are the same $$ as the JVC, and the JVC is better. -.- That's the funny thing. I'd only get the JVC if the scarlet wasn't going to come out for another 9-12 months (after the JVC HM100 release), because then I'd already have enough money again to get a scarlet without stretching myself. You are right, if I got it and then the scarlet released I would be REALLY upset. :( I believe the scarlet trashes the JVC in every way! No doubts here, it's all scheduling and needing to shoot now (or in 3-6 months) as opposed to in the distant future. And yes...That's why it came up. :)

Thanks to the guy who came to my defense when I was getting ripped on for trying to seek some further information. I wasn't threatening RED at all. I'd rather they take their time. I'd rather they get it right. I'm just trying to plan my own timetables and getting my budget ready, it is a new year after all. :)

Anyways, hope something comes along!

Aside from whining...I've worked with several R1 camera's already and loved them. I tested the RED workflow on my new Macbook I just got and found it incredibly simple and it worked on the lowest end Macbook they had. Of course, it works even better on my Macpro which I've been messing around with footage and showing off to everyone I know cause it's amazing.

I've even been showing photographers the 4k tiffs and they are blown away that the image is coming from a motion camera. They are as excited to get a Scarlet as I am (some already want to test mine, they I've told them it won't be quite as good of a still image). I am converted to RED, but I also live in reality where I have to do business now and not later, and since I can't afford an R1 I am very much looking forward to a Scarlet.

I've ran into bugs in the workflow and had to deal with them myself, and by calling friends who also use RED, and also referring to the forums here. I haven't said anything negative about anyone and I was simply trying to get some useful information considering the timetables that were given by the company...

Like I said, I can be patient, but it'd be extremely useful for my budget and situation to get a little information especially considering how soon the camera's are supposed to be out.

Sorry if you were offended, but I am actually a red fan and have used the footage and imported it and exported it and ran it through all the red software and networked with quite a few great people. Heck, I was at a RED presentation just a week and a half ago and I'm about to schedule a 1/2 day to 2 day shoot with a RED in the next month. :)

So far my experience on the forums and their kind way of handling people has been impressive. Especially the response from RED employees on the complaint forum, that's actually why I felt comfortable making this statement and asking this question. You're the first person to really give me a bad vibe.

Take care!

It's a very different situation this time around. The target market(s) are more diversified, the competitive (DSMC) landscape is different (driving the redesign and thus, unfortunately, a substantial release delay), the cameras are being mass-produced (ideally in much larger numbers), and the economic climate is far different from the one into which R1 was released. I think this last factor will be the most important reason for any further delays beyond the most recently quoted release dates. Most likely delays won't be driven by drastic improvements this time. Unless there is some technologic breakthrough that both lowers production costs and improves specifications, I doubt there will be much of the giddy exultation we saw at NAB 2008. If anything, Red will be soberly managing expectations -- I wouldn't be surprised to see lowered specs and/or higher prices, both of which have already happened with the 2/3-inch Scarlet, particularly the fixed-lens model. And such changes may be the best we can hope for.

Realistically, I wouldn't count on Scarlet at all. Red has worked wonders thus far, but the economic downturn has scuttled many companies and caused the plans of many more survivors to be radically scaled back. Jim has alluded to how Red has already been affected, and you can infer that things may get worse. Scarlet may undergo several more changes, and the worst is not inconceivable, namely, that the Scarlet/Epic program is scaled back or indefinitely delayed. I'm not saying it will happen, only that it can. Don't tie your projects to the availability of a camera system, unless you're certain that it will be released before you start shooting. Otherwise, follow the conventional wisdom: use what you can get your hands on when you need it.

I believe Mr. Jannard mentioned that the economy has slowed down delivery of components from certain suppliers. And given the state of the economy, this supply line may remain volatile for some time. RED could very well be at the mercy of parts completely outside its control. As someone else mentioned, you can bet that RED wants to get their products to market as soon as possible.

Zacahry- didn't mean to give you a bad vibe my man. Don't take my sense of humor personally. you cant detect tone from a blog... just some good natured ribbing, thats all. Seriously, you cant expect to make a decision on
whats been released in the future... this is an emerging company... going thru all kinds of growing pains... and they have learned to now announce too soon... it all about managing expectations... think they would rather make you guess than get you excited and then delay again. they are breaking new ground afterall... so my point was if you want predictable product cycles... buy JVC or Sony... if you want cutting edge... be patient and RENT

if you spend time researching, you will see Scarlett is still a ways off... and even then early Red One buyers will have preference... so there is no saying a new user will have one before the end of 2009... but even thats a guess.

BTW my signature does say Kind Regards... :)
