What a wild ride it is with the economy. Partners are falling down (going bankrupt), the economy is in the tank, many people are not taking delivery of the cameras they put down deposits on... generally very bleak.

On the other hand, more RED ONEs are going out the door faster than ever before (new customers). RED Ray prototype footage looks FANTASTIC. The aluminum Scarlet and Epic prototypes look INCREDIBLE. The mechanical and electronic connections are better than I had dreamed they could be.

So what's the worry? ASIC development, Monstro development setbacks (minor but irritating), many subs that are buckling under the pressure of the economy... standard stuff.

These are very rough times in case you haven't noticed. As self-contained as we are at RED, we do rely on some outside sources. It is incredible how messed up the rest of the world is right now. We will work through all of the problems we face (we always do), but I feel a bit sad for how many others are at such peril these days. You read about it in the newspaper, we see it 1st hand.

Be careful with your spending. Invest only in things you know can make you money. This economic situation will not correct itself for a few years (not weeks or months).

Just so you know...

Jim

thanks for looking out for us, Big Guy :) I'm glad you're liking what you see with the new stuff, hope you can share more soon.

And I'm thrilled you've finally said something about RED RAY! Thats was the most exciting thing I heard about at NAB and I feel like we haven't heard anything since. I can't wait to hear more on that.

Thanks again for the camera, Jim. So far, you're first outing into the camera industry has fulfilled just about all of my hopes and dreams in a piece of equipment :)

Lots of incredible stuff going on inside the RED Garage... just sorry to see so many struggle so hard.

Jim

We're heading to Berlin tomorrow with our feature "The Exploding Girl" which is the first RED feature at the festival. thanks for help to make that possible. we have several more lined up and its a very exciting time. keep it coming.

Despite the economy, I still have my eye on the target. A big X. Let's hope things don't get that much worse before the new cameras arrive. I wish I had as much confidence in the economy as I do in Red.

Thanks for the insight.

Good to hear some updates. Look forward to seeing pictures!

P.S. - Jim, ever happen to make it out to the motocross track anymore?

I'll encourage you to buy your RED dream if:

1. It makes you money
2. You can really afford it if it doesn't make you money.

Otherwise, relax on it until #1 or #2 is valid.

I haven't been to a motocross race lately. I still watch the results. I also haven't been to a drag race in awhile. Been too busy building cameras and visiting sets. Off to "Book of Eli" later this week.

I can not tell you how refreshing it is to hear ! Spoken with true honesty and sincerity... not something i would expect to hear coming from a company, especially given the fact (how you've so clearly pointed out)we are in such tough economic times. It ain't going to get better fast. I will be with Red for Life
(not months or years).

Just so you know...

We aren't in this to "make our quarterly numbers"...

I feel like as long as the hardware stays in good shape (which I have every confidence in) buying even a Scarlet can be an investment for my whole life. As long as I have any talent, the Scarlet could be the difference between me being a jobless film school graduate or a young filmmaker.

Jim, not to turn this into a political discussion, but you did mention the economy, so....

The stimulus package needs a lot of work. It requires bipartisan thinking, taking the best ideas from each side and working it into something that truly gets the economy stimulated. I hate to say this so early in Obama's presidency, but if they drop the ball on this one - tough times ahead for everybody, worldwide! We don't need politics right now, we need smart economic wizardry that devises a plan that has a positive short term result but an even better long term result. All around me people are losing their jobs, and it is finally starting to hit home. If we are even half the country we think we are, we better do everything in our power to get this right, and correct the insanity that has been going on for the past decade. We've all lost touch with reality and need to get back to basics.

Thank you Jim for taking the time to post. I know allot of people such as my self check the forum everyday and look forward when we hear word from the RED camp. Also thanks for the honesty I know we all know it is tuff out here right now. Some of use no doubt have lost jobs. But it is always good to hear the thoughts in your own headed echoed by someone else.

Stimulus package or not... we are in for a long haul. Get used to it. Adapt to it. Good things happen in bad times. But not if your head is stuck deep in the sand.

Realization is the 1st step to the road to recovery...

Jim

This is just another distinction that makes Jim and the Red Team stand out from the pack.

Thanks for that Jim. Looking forward to getting more info when you feel comfortable in letting us know.

It may be a tough time. But with any adversity comes a chance for some of us to shine bright. I look forward to the Scarlet to help blow on those dice when I roll the bones in true film style next winter on my first feature.

It seems to me that in times of economic hardship, it is smarter to spend money on quality when you do indeed have to spend. (I think this works no matter what the economy is).

Luckily for us, RED is about quality. I can't wait to get my Scarlet, I just hope things are going well over there in RED-land, and that things haven't gotten too rough for you!:}
