  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pretty incredible Red footage here

Nice stuff Eduardo but I don't think it compares to the super telephoto tracking shot Vincent pulled off. :)

Yeah, I've been following Vincent's work with the Red and the 5D and they're getting some really nice stuff. He's got a great eye.

That is funny. I can only dream of having a Red, but we (2 Sony EX3's w/Nikon 300mm=1650mm(300x5.5) were shooting those same days at Pipe, and our footage looks cleaner, the Red footage seems too sharp in my opinion. It takes years to figure out how to shoot surfing, Vincent's is ok but I would not praise him for it. Tracking and focusing a surfer coming across the frame is easy, try rack focusing a surfer coming at you when you are a good two hundred yards further down the beach... now that is talent. Let's see that Vincent!

Nathan, I agree that Vincent's shots are impressive, but they look over-sharpened to me as well. Now, where can I see your material? I'd love to see the product of that setup of yours.

Great Stuff Vincent!!!

Thanks for posting!

Tico, I just flew in from Hawaii yesterday. I will post a few images of the EX3 rig with both the Nikon 300mm and the letus Extreme setups we use. We are currently filming for a new surf film, keeping a few pieces under wraps until we have the details nailed down. The release date is August 2009. I will be posting some of the material on Vimeo in the newt couple of days.

Nathan, I assume you mean the post processing is too sharp. The Red provides a cleaner image if you were to compare the two cameras unprocessed. And yes, please provide us with some footage. I actually like the EX3, so I am in no way dogging it.

Steve, I do mean the post processing. I have been following Red from the beginning and needless to say I'm in love:) The dinner bill is just to much. That is why I am shooting with the EX3, she fills the void (for now)! I'll post the footage in HD on Vimeo tomorrow!

I'd give it for camera operation 8/10 (if the shot hasn't been reframed in post) for TV use and 7/10 for theatrical.

It goes soft toward the end and the board drops out of the bottom of frame.

Of course editorial value may be 10/10 which makes it a great shot.

With all respect but I don't think it's that great of a shot, good tracking yes (if not corrected in post), nice shot not so much. The angle is boring, footage looks muddy and the music takes away from the action.

Nice 1st post... ugh. Maybe you could post some of your footage?
