  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No NAB for RED...

the euro red day.. said.. euro.. it should be to where the cheaper flights fly

I'd expect RED to be shipping at least the 35mm scarlet by IBC not just showing. if its just showing then 2009 will be a wash for new products. announcing new products is always a double edge sword

Good News!

Good News!

My opinion is that Red has now a chance to get Assimilate, Apple, Avid, Quantel, and God knows who else to participate in a Red festival! Who know, even Arriflex might show up to see how they can adapt to a RED future.

There is no reason why it can’t be at the Red facilities in Las Vegas (or anywhere else), and people can come from all over the world, I think it’s a Great Idea! Publication will pay attention because they are focus on a single product, therefore there might be more articles written about Red and all the companies that have a Red connection like the ones I mentioned above.

There could be a Red based internet broadcast, a DVD (on Red of course), and anything else one might imagine. The variety of Red related ways of spreading the word only need to focus on Red and its partners. It’s a great place to experiment with the possibilities. Those who can afford it can still go the NAB 2009, but some Red related vendors might reconsider and go to the Red event, because that’s where their clients will be.

The hell with Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, or anyone that has an INFERIOR PRODUCT. The real meat will be on what the Red sensors can-do with a High Def image at 4:4:4, the proof will be in the pudding not at NAB 2009. It will be in the variety of resolutions that Red will offer, all at 4:4:4!

Come out when you’re ready, but come out with all guns blazing. I remember reading an article as to when Jim flew down to Nez Zealand, with a Red prototype, Peter Jackson shot a film in tree days, and they showed up at the last minute with the completed film. Now it’s time to fast forward to the next step, the resolution and designed of the Red camera has been “up-graded” it just needs to do what they say it will do!

Make it more comfortable for your clients, and all the related companies! There will be more Red personnel at the RED DAY(S), so really it really a win, win situation! There could be Red Workshops, and many more informative programs, Jim could address all in attendance a-la “Steve Jobs”.

I think this is a good move. The RED at NAB noise was getting a little out of hand. Having only prototypes and promises could have given the usual suspects a field day of FUD. The Apple-thinking is sound here, RED doesn't need NAB anymore, it can generate its own headlines and PR when required. The showing of working, orderable units at a special event down the line will be very powerful.

Can I put in a vote for a Pinewood event as well?

(I'm happy to go to Amsterdam but the wife will give me that funny look again....)

People have offered up suggestions as how to have RED have a presence with out the cost of the tent. I sincerly doubt that the cost of the space is the issue. Jim's words were pretty clear:

It's not about price it's that Jim an co are busy working on your next camera.

Aside from that, NAB existed before RED. The first time I saw a techno-crane was at NAB. Or gildecams, or an eQ or a DS|HD. If you are into gear, need new gear or need a cover to get to vegas it is still worth while.

As far as RED DAY goes:

Honey and vinegar.

If you want a RED DAY near you... why not take steps to make it happen. An offer of space and attendees is much more inviting than demands.

I don't believe having a RED sponsored event that continues to cultivate the RED Community would be too much of a distraction. You would just need a few people from RED, a space, and the rest could be organized by the vast amount of third parties offering RED gear and software.

Sure, they can continue to concentrate on DSMC, RED RAY, Lenses, and getting other work finished, but they do have a great product already out there to nurture. :-)

Perhaps it could be similar to what the Final Cut User Group has been doing, even while Apple did not attend last year.

Personally, I think it's too soon for RED to get on a high horse with this stuff. (Hopefully, with all the success they've had early, they aren't!) While RED is doing awesome stuff and does get a lot of attention, NAB is a GREAT place to actually get some non-believers to wander in. It wouldn't take many additional sales to pay for itself in the long run. I see comparisons with Apple, but come on...RED is in year #2! of a shipping product. Not exactly the same as Apple. Again, they can have all the events they want, but the game is NOT to always the fanboys in...it's to get the OTHER people to look. That is usually where events like NAB come in handy.

I was also really hoping that they would also do some things for existing RED users...like a day long seminar on workflows or a coordinated one with each: Apple (Final Cut Pro), AVID, and Adobe. (Or their own apps.) Maybe these will still happen, but I guess it would have to be from those companies now and less under Red's control. It probably also excludes any direct Q&A's...unless they are sending people to the RED party or other events. Not sure about this yet...

I was planning to go to NAB...but without Apple and RED, I'm seriously on the fence now. There are a TON of other companies and a ton of other reasons to go...but to us fence-sitters, it does make the decision more difficult.

PS-I also am appreciative that RED is letting us know NOW. I have an email in my box saying $100 off registration if ordered by Friday. Good to know RED's plans now.

Good news for us. Will be in Hawaii on a shoot then. Guess we won't miss much in LV...

Who is still going?

Who is still going?

I'm super bummed about this but I will still be going. (can't cancel my booking anyhow)

Who is still going?

Don't worry kids, there will be plenty to see. I know of several products scheduled to debut at NAB that should be of great interest to REDusers.

RED has decided to skip NAB 2009. We will hold our own RED DAY when we feel we are ready to present the new systems and when they are fully ready to showcase. Date and location will be announced in future.

A minor delay by a major part vendor will not mean much to the delivery schedules but would mean too many non-working prototypes at NAB... which we find unacceptable.

As usual, we will keep you posted on info as we can.

Jim

Off course Truly sorry to hear that, but on the other hand, I absolutely understand and support your decision.

Even so I was looking forward to this year NAB like no other time, it makes me fill a little less pressure and in no need to further delay my Return to Italy. :bye2:

I'm sure your private event and showcase of the new DSMC line up will be totally a Rocking House one, better then NAB could ever be, less people, and only the really interested ones.

Hope that I will be in the possibility to come back then for a quick visit and some Shopping:w00t:

ciao

Perhaps RED could sublet their space to interested third party vendors that sell RED products? There are lots of really great 3rd party products for the RED ONE that would be exciting to see all in one place at NAB. I would imagine the space is already paid for and quite expensive. Similar to what Apple used to do with part of their space?

Who is still going?

I may still go, but will decide as time gets closer. I have 3 reasons to go to Vegas this year, the biggest reason being to check out the new RED stuff. Obviously that one has been eliminated. The remaining 2 reasons are to party with fellow redusers and 4/19 is my b-day. While those two reasons seem perfectly justifiable to me, I may just save my fun trip for whenever RED decides to have a big RED DAY and unveil the goods.

Hey Dan, is Daren going?

It's nice to know this with a good advance warning for those folks who might have been making the trip just for RED. :)
