  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best 50"+ 1080p TV?

Hey Brandon,

The Panny is awesome; I couldn't agree more with the majority of reviews that say this model has the second to best picture quality out there (second only to the Pioneers) and the best bang for the buck. In short, we made a huge leap in image quality from our old 720p/1080i DLP. Major leap.

One of the main reasons we went Plasma was for the superior contrast and organic feel of the picture. Once we got the TV, I became more aware of refresh rates. The 48hz mode is stunningly similar to 35mm projection. A lot of people can't stand the flicker in the highlights, but to me it exhibits the same flicker I see with 35mm projection. Watching a good quality blu-ray transfer with 48hz mode on is a real gem IMO.

One of the reported issues I've seen is that the brightness of the TV may change ever so slightly, and this happens rarely, and is hardly noticeable. I've only noticed it twice, both times watching No Country for Old Men when we first got the set, but haven't seen it since. Other reviews have mentioned that same effect. To be honest, initially I thought it was the lens stopping down  . I'm wondering if its a certain setting I had on before when I saw it, but again, it was barely present when it happened, so I wouldn't actually call it a major issue and discourage others from buying the set because of this fluke.

If you got 2700 and have the room for a 58" (even if you don't, bigger is always better right?) then I'd make no hesitation. Great TV.

what does that mean? (480hz)

Doesnt mean anything :-)

Plasma displays are 1 bit devices, which means each cell can be either on or off.
You can only make graduations by switching the cell on and off at different timings.

To make graduations each frame is devided into sub fields.
In this case 480/60=8 subfields per frame.
If this was the only means on graduation the depth would be 2n8=256 graduations.

But as you can also adjust the lenght of each sub frame you can get 4096 or more

Earlier displays used 6 subframes or less and used frame based dithering to defeat banding in the shadows.

Here is an image from Pioneers patent on their driving method. Sub field SF1-8 at varying adressing and priming periods to create graduations:

8 subframes with a frame frequency at 16.7 ms would imply a framerate of 59.9

Samsung HL-67A750 (or 61"- 61A750) LED DLP 3D (120Hz) RPTV is smart choice ;)

power consumption of leddlp ~150W vs ~500W 50-inch plazma :cold:

Maybe you have it set on "Dynamic" (PICTURE>VIEWING MODE).
I use "Cinema" setting because "Normal" has boosted contrast and "Eco" changes based on ambient light, plus all except "Cinema" tend to crush the blacks.

all the suggestions have been LCD. is this because people think they're better than plasma?

YES LCD is better than plasma. LCD also cost more to manufacture, but recently they have been closing the gap that is Y everyone thinks plasma is on its way out. At some price points plasma my still be a better deal but not for long.

I really prefer the organic, vibrant look of plasma to LCDs. LCDs often seem dim, bluish and narrow gamut to me, no matter how they are calibrated. That includes the led backlit series 9 Samsung LCDs.

The full HD Digital Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier projectors by JVC are supposed to be excellent as well, but I haven't seen them myself yet.

Hey craig, if you get a chance, read this short thread on cnet and get back to me about this pulldown issue.

Thanks!

I really don't notice anything odd about the way the set handles 1080i24 broadcast; I was just watching Blood Diamond and it looked exactly like all the 3:2 footage I've seen. Another thing, is that I also have the Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player which can also play standard DVDs at 48hz.

Brandon - just wanted to say thanks for starting this thread. I'm looking at having to buy two of these guys by weeks end for a small 3D theater we're putting together and the information that has come to light in this thread has been invaluable.

I don't think I have Viewing Mode on my set. Do you also have the 800 series? The only thing that comes close to Dynamic Mode in picture settings would be CATS, which I have off.

Hmm. It looks like different naming for different markets.
I have 46PY85 (PZ in US), which in Europe costs the same price you got your 58" for, btw. :ranting2:
I checked the manual for your model and it's practically the same (800 series has a couple of additional features), so for your model it should be "Picture mode>Vivid/Standard/THX(Cinema)/Custom/Game". Try putting it on THX(Cinema).
