  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prepare yourself...

Interesting...some people scream "awesome" and "fantastic" even when something bad / unpleasent seems be ahead.

Looks like Mr. Jannard is preparing us for price changes and fps restrictions. But let`s wait and better restrain praises until that moment...

Well... it's the challenge of RED hyperbole. When you announce that it's going to dwarf a previous announcement that was led up to be the third coming of christ we assssume the changes are for the better.

The fact of the matter is Red is competing with Canon and Nikon now. Both are saying "We make the world's best SLRs and by the way you can shoot 24fps motion." RED has to challenge them with "We make some of the best sensors in the world oh yeah and we can also shoot stills."

My suspicion is that they're up playing the challenge of a motion sensor to tell us "Canon isn't going to catch up on the motion front for some time. We know it looks like they're really really close but it's a false comparison."

But regardless photographers are jumping on the 1080p DSLR bandwagon. RED needs to hit the <$5,000 market with a product that competes with the D10 etc. Maybe sacrifice some resolution and make it 3k. who knows. But that's my impression. The perception is that Canon's offerings are "Good enough" to most still photographers. They might make DPs and VFX Sups cringe but it looks pretty when there isn't too much motion.

I'm not certain what sacrifice RED is going to need to make but I would be pretty confident that tommorow's announcement is going to be framed as a Canon Killer. Maybe the S35 Scarlet will be nixxed in exchange for the FF35 scarlet. Maybe the resolution will be backed off in exchange for cost and fps. After all they keep reminding us it's the processors that are expensive. 4k is easier than 6k regardless of the 'size' of the pixels. 3k is 4x less computer intensive than 6k. 1/4 the DSPs would be a huge cost savings I imagine. Less heat. Smaller package.

I was going to go out on my boat today, but this talk of Somali Pirates has me worried.

*Then I realised I don't own a boat, so that helped.

I'm not prepared to stay awake till 4:30A.M. Eastern Standard Time. :waaa:
So... Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love you, Tomorrow...:whistling:

Well, my brother and I were talking about it and we thought, "What if the announcement is a big price decrease on the RED One?" Imagine, the Scarlet is set to come out at higher resolutions for less money than a RED One, the EPIC outdoes the RED One right off the bat. Granted, the price decrease wouldn't be much, say $10,000-$12,000 for just the body. I know, the RED One is supposed to receive a sensor upgrade later on, well that's the price increase, see? Yes, you can have 4.5K now, but when the 5K+ Mysterium X and/or Monstro sensor upgrades come, you'll have to pay the premium. Also, if you need higher resolution, smaller form factor, and/or full frame in the same package, get a Scarlet. This would give a reasonably definitive low end, middle ground, and high end segment of RED's products. I know, the RED One currently is set to sit in the middle ground at it's current $17,500 price point but it just isn't there anymore compared to the Scarlet and Epic offerings, so why not put it next to the top Scarlet model or simply offer the streamlined 4.5K RED One for the reduced price and offer the upgraded 5K+ RED One at the old $17,500 price? It also adds the option some people were complaining about where they wanted a RED One over a Scarlet, strange I know, but they wouldn't be able to argue then. The trick though is to not even touch the prices on RED's accessories so as to even out the profit margins.

But, even if they did all that, all of the other camera manufacturers would be blown away instantly and have to scramble to compete. Well, they were going to do that anyway once Scarlet comes out but RED could really give them one heck of a holiday treat!

Please, remember, it's just a thought. Who knows what's going to be announced other than RED? But if it is a price cut on the RED One, I'd be very interested to see what the response is.

Hell, you could as well abandon or postpone the 2/3" brain and the fixed lens Scarlet (promise from another time) and propose at an intermediate price tag a low end (2K) S35 brain for I don't know, 3500(?), 4000 (?). In the end, it would save you development effort and I think you would not lose a single customer.

They would loose me for sure. I don't want a lower resolution camera.
Too late. 2 years ago 4k came. Who likes lower resolution?
Try something else.
2/3" brain and the fixed lens is a super proven and extremely good combination, and it's only wonderful at 3k resolution.

Also, to intercut well it's better if you have comparable resolution than comparable dep of view. Depth of view changes all the time anyway when changing focal lengh and aperture.
If you like he idea of a single camera with s35 sensor, scarlet and epic will provides it, with much better resolution then 2k. If you want to film everything in slow motion, just pay more. I think 90% of users want to make movies at very high resolution rather than slow motion captures.

Hi speed camera have always been specialty cameras. Sure there is a market, and sure it may increase when tools get more available.
But if hi speed were more important than resolution, in the world there would have been more hi-speed 16mm cameras than normal 35mm movie cameras.
Sorry. But you will have speed if you need it so much. It's only normal to pay for such difficult to make extra feature, that imply a radical increase in sensor and electronics design.
