  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's the No.1 missing piece in the RED post software puzzle?

Nigel,

A tool that can do all the great things that your application can do combined with the visual reference features (in terms of cropping) of Hans' Clipfinder. Additions that would be nice are also a visual reference of burn ins, the ability to save render settings, and full featured raw adjustments from Red Alert.

So in short, if you or anyone could mash up Clipfinder, Monkey Extract and RedAlert! I'd be in heaven. I want to be able to go from Application X to FCP to Application X and back to FCP. without having to open RedAlert or RedCine to piecemeal features and visual references.

If I could code I'd be right there helping you!

Cheers,

Saving render settings we are going to do.

Extra settings from red alert - which ones do you miss? We can add them pretty easily.

Burn ins, we were just trying to keep the UI simple, but better font and placement will be in the next version...

Cropping, interesting - but would that be for entire sequences? Or just to resize single shots?

Hey Nigel-

Re:Settings from RA!,- Why not all of them? What i really meant was the ability to Color Grade (with multiple clips would be nice too- like RC) in your app...

Re:Burn-ins' I meant a visual rep of where they will fall in the outputted frame (I'm on a G4 right now other wise I would pop open Clipfinder and show you what i mean).

Re: Cropping, again in Clipfinder, Not so much for Re-Framing (I'd Much rather do that in a DI/Online with my full DPX frames) but more so for the rendering of Dailies aspect- for visualization of crop, burning etc. Shot for Shot would be nice though!

You guys kick ass and take names!:gun: :gun: :gun:

Cheers Nigel,

Tim

Would be nice to be able to do 16/9 Anamorphic Quicktimes for offline.
a 720x576 with 33% stretch, still having the propper 2:1 aspect with a little black up/down.

1)
A progress bar show the time taken and time left, Or just a "XX hrs remaining"
maybe a "Pause" button, with a continue.

2)
Having it being "Bright Clip" enabled. So it can right the DPX's in sequential order and not fragmenting the SAN.

3)
How about a metacheater replacement... Combining BWF/WAV audio files with the R3D's to make a complete QT ready to be edited without synking in FCP/Avid.

4)
You will like this:
A email notifier telling me if anything goes wrong or is finished. maybe a seperate app that can email even if the Monkey crashes.
Or even being able to send a SMS/Text message to my cell!
That way we can confidently leave work and come back if needed.

5)
A "Monkey Farm"! Have the app running on on Mac, but by using the ideling Mac's on the network (all conected to the same SAN via Fiber) to speed up the render. If it's "impossible", one way around it could be that the app does this:

I load 10clips.
I have 4 unused MacPro's on the network.
Monkey handshakes with the other four. Divides the clips up and send 2 clips to each Mac. Not actualy sending the R3D's but all the render-settings and info of where to find them and where to render to.
I take a very short breake, check it, goes home hours earlier thanks to the massive speed impovment.

Would be cool to have a fuction that can take a HDD (containing multiple CF-cards + Red-Drives in subfolders) from the shoot
and copy that to a (up to 4) destination folder (being my Raid, LTO3a etc)
and do a checksum + a Log (for insurance companys)
and when it's been copyed, it does the QT's (+synks the audio:).

That way a DiT can drop a Drive of at my posthouse (or his office) and set it to work without having to worry.

Some great ideas in here... :)

Though I'm sure it must be coming, the biggest hole - especially for the Scarlet and Epic, with all those juicy pixels, is digital projectors capable of showing the work product without having to capture it to film. There will be a market in Imax theaters for the 645 and 617 format and for the FF35 and 645 in the regular cinemas. Build 'em at a similarly attractive price point and the sales will come - there are over 37,000 screens in the U.S. alone, so worldwide the market is in the billions. Abscent projectors to show digital cinema in it's pure glory, camera sales won't achieve their fullest potential.

Missing Integrated "Pull Lists"

Missing Integrated "Pull Lists"

I've been testing Red workflows for a few weeks now on both Avid and Final Cut Pro. The most important thing that I see missing in both workflows comes at the very end of the process and that is the lack of DPX "pull list" capabilities native in the Red software.

Luckily Monkey Extract does a bang-up job but I would like to see Red either license that software or develop their own similar solution. This is essential in a truly professional workflow where you might be sending shots out to DI, Flame, etc for finishing it's not sufficient to say "just send them the ProRes, you won't see the difference" or "export DPX out of Color." For one thing we've found that editing with the reference files is a beast so the best alternative is to work with ProRes proxies and pull out the DPX sequences on the backend, most similar to a film workflow.

In terms of Final Cut I actually prefer to use RedRushes rather than the "log and transfer" in FCP because it gives you more control over the transcoding and I also generally like to burn-in the TC/TOD into the image as a safety measure. More/similar options in the FCP import would be nice.

Also I noticed that the FCP wasn't maintaining the proper "reel" metadata which was essential for reconnecting to the original R3D files for DPX output in Monkey Extract. It looks like if I manually copied the "name" field to the "reel" for every clip this fixed the problem. Could this have anything to do with the camera build, the footage I was testing with was shot in July this year? That seemed too obvious an error I hope this is just the firmware version of the footage.

Thoughts?

One big time-eater must be the Avid-work(around)flow...
It would realy be nice with a app that could load all the R3D's and outbut a bunch of MXF's that an be drag'n'doped into a Avid projekt.

In other terms, would it be possible to export a MXF from Monkey (in the future)?
I think people would be willing to pay for it.

How come there isn't any software that can combine a R3D and a BWF into a QuickTime (or MXF).
In other words: synking external audio.
Or is there such an app out there?

Avid MetaFuze will soon be able to export Avid MXF from R3D. That will solve the problems on the Windows side of things.

assuming that both apple and adobe will be .r3d natively compliant, the wost wanted piece of software would be:

a nice color corrector in the adobe side. i know you can do pretty much everything with ae or premiere or even photoshop, but still, when you get used to discreet color correction interface, or even color, then you really miss them...

or

a nice compositing system with apple. shake is still good, but the other guys have been running, lately... and

i'd really love to have one of those...:innocent:

how about the colorista plugin???

Yeh, but how soon is soon?

By the way. I'm trying to import R3D converted to QT's into Avid...
If it is a SD project, should/can I still use DNxHD36? o should i use an other format tht will do it faster/better?

It would be great if there was something like Lightroom for RED files. IE: a program that served as a basic DAM and allowed you to do first pass RAW processing.
