Am I reading this correctly? Doesn't this mean that not only the lens is fixed, but also the zoom? I would think that if you still could zoom in and out, it would be worded as "Fixed 8x Zoom Lens."

Maybe I'm just missing something. Wouldn't be the first time... :waaa:

They're just leaving the word 'lens' off. 8x fixed zoom and or 8x fixed zoom lens reads the same to me. They've been saying it is a fixed zoom lens since day 1, I doubt they would do a bait and switch on the last day.

Sorry, but "Fixed Lens" and "Fixed Zoom" are read in two completely different ways. To me, they mean completely different things. Wouldn't think that questioning the verbiage is showing a lack of common sense.

Austin - answer this question. Why in god's name would a company release a camera with a non-interchangeable prime lens?

Unless I'm wrong, if you add up the fact that Red is releasing a camera with a fixed lens, the only lens that camera will have with the knowledge that their literature states that it's a fixed 8X zoom and having the equation equal anything besides the fact that it's a variable zoom lens would constitute a gross lack of common sense.

Okay, you guys aren't getting my reason for posting. I know that an 8x prime would be stupid. I can't think of anyone who would ever get any advantage out of that. My question is in that (to me, and my colleagues) the verbiage is implying something about the lens that in all likelihood is not the case. I guess that we're the only ones who are questioning the wording on this, so I guess I should just shut up.

It is a lens that is "Fixed" to the camera... its a zoom lens 8x...

Like an HVX with a built in lens, this lens cannot be removed.

Also a lens can't really be 8(X) without being zoom. The multiplier means a multiple of the wide mm size. There isn't an 8x prime, it would be simply stated in millimeters.

I think what Austin is worried about (correct me if I'm wrong) is whether the zoom maybe fixed in shot ie. you can zoom in and out to frame the shot, but once rolling the zoom is fixed. To re-frame you'd have to stop recording. Or?

The same assumption has been made elsewhere concerning the fixed lense, but I don't think that's at all the case.

Very interested to hear more about the fly-by-wire set up though!

Can't wait to get my Scarlet Fix, I know I'll be hooked for life. Thank you RED for keeping the revolution within reach for the little guys!

Actually, I'm not worried at all about the lens. I plan to buy one of the more configurable versions, and can currently afford the 2/3" counterpart to the fixed lens version, and will hopefully be able to save enough for the S35.

The reason why I posed this question was because I felt the verbiage makes it mean something else. As I stated before, I feel that "8x Fixed Zoom" means something different than "Fixed 8x Zoom." Red@BirnsandSawyer's explanation is helpful in that it does tell me that an "8x Fixed Zoom" doesn't actually make sense.

This is totally not as big an issue as it's turning out to be. Just pointing out a the syntax.

I just can not beleive the arguments that some people get into in this forum. It's beyond words!

Jose, that's when you need to use one of these:

Apologies, I stand corrected. I was on a different forum where the assumption was made about the zoom being fixed in shot, I thought maybe you were highlighting the point that the 'fixed zoom' wording might lead others to the same conclusion. I wasn't critising I just wanted to save you from a bashing on what might've been a valid point.

As this is a camera for cinema purposes, I was wondering why they say "8X" instead of the exact focal distances. That would give a much better idea of what we can do with it.

Fixed zoom while shooting?? What the hell is wrong with you people?

How it is that you're bright enough to figure out how to turn on the computer, long onto this site, make a username and password and then bang around on your keyboard long enough to somehow form complete sentences is beyond me.

I just don't get it, are they telling kids in special needs schools about Red or something? How on earth are you people coming up with this nonsense?

Will someone please give these guys something shiny to play with so they'll go away for a bit?

8x in this case would mean that the long (telephoto) end of the lens is eight times that of the widest setting, and that makes perfect sense.

Here's something shiny I've been playing with

See that longer lens-looking thing on there? Yeah, that's called a fixed zoom lens. It's roughly twice the magnification of the other lenses on there.

I believe that this is similar to what the other poster was referring to. Now if you could kindly refrain from being a jackass, I'm sure a lot of the users on this forum would appreciate it.
