I'm still formulating all my thoughts and opinions on the Epic/Scarlet system - but I'd like to point out something here.

Seems like a lot of Redusers are TORN about what to do -

Let me offer my 2 cents -

CHOOSE TO UPGRADE TO EPIC -

BUT BUY A SCARLET S35 (without the discount) -

THIS WAY - I THINK - LATER YOU CAN GET FULL CREDIT FOR YOUR RED ONE TOWARDS AN EPIC

#1: ALL SPECS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE - AND THEY WILL

#2: DATES ARE TARGETS - RED WILL HIT SOME, MISS SOME - AND MAYBE .. YOU NEVER KNOW ... THEY COULD EVEN BE SAND-BAGGING SOME DATES AND STUFF IS READY BEFORE THE TARGETS

If you own a RED CAMERA - and primarily do NARRATIVE work - I strongly suggest considering the Scarlet S35.

You can keep your Red One, which offers some important features and options which you will not get in the Scarlet.

You can shoot 23.98 in 5K with Redcode 42 - obviously a better image than the Red One

You can use many Red One accessories as you buy into more Epic accessories - EVF, etc. -

You can use 35mm PL glass - on Red One + Scarlet S35

I predict that the Scarlet FF35 will take longer and you will get pissed when you see everyone shooting with the S35 while you wait for your FF35

You get INTO the Scarlet/Epic system

You can BUY another Scarlet S35 and go 3D (** actually, I need to find out if you can go parallax with PL mount lenses or do you need the min-primes .. hmmmm ...?)

You get MORE lens mount options beside the 35 PL you have on your Red One

Make some more money - and then turn in your Red One for an Epic.

My 2 cents.

Nice logic Mark...am I wrong to think most R1 owners would like to upgrade to EPIC eventually? For the work that I do, Narrative, Commerical, Documentary...I do need a camera with many options but I must admit at least once on every shoot I say to myself, a mini RED would be perfect for this shot etc. There even entire shoots I could use Scarlet as A cam, cause 2 weeks handheld in Black Rock dessert with RED1 had its challenges.

So now you got me thinking, S35 Scarlet would make a great companion B cam (maybe A) to R1 but would NOT replace my R1 with Scarlet given Jim's recent post stating Scarlet's limited capabilities compared to R1. Also I wont be out of commission when I do a rental...or rent both and save more money until I can go Epic FF35.

Great, thanks Mark..now I can let this one rest knowing my R1 is not going anywhere...cause lets be honest, its still REDs flagship people and will be for some time to come. Happy shooting...

Exactly what we are doing, Mark, though your post confused me. First, you said Upgrade to Epic and buy a new Scarlet. The rest talked about buying the Scarlet with the discount, instead.

Anyways, we will be upgrading to the S35 Epic. Now that I have a lot of money invested in PL Mount lenses, I am going to use them! It's also not much money to get into the V2 designs... We will also be getting a Scarlet S35 as a b-camera and we can use those same lenses.

It's not a coincidence that these are the first 2 set to be released, too.

Haskell, you bring up a good point:

When is RED going to release a true "pocket camera"??

Obviously, this was the way they initially were thinking of Scarlett, before it morphed into something much bigger (literally & figuratively). I am still VERY surprised with the personality of RED that they have not released some type of Iconix-like camera that is mostly sensor...few controls...that can fit on helmets, car dashboards, skateboards, etc. This very much fits into the personality of RED, so I would guess they've had these ideas...I guess we'll see down the road if the "pocketcam" concept lives.

"A RED ONE owner has several choices.

1. A RED ONE owner can keep the RED ONE and upgrade to the Mysterium-X sensor for a TBD price... just as we promised.

2. A RED ONE owner can purchase any EPIC and trade in their RED ONE for full $17,500 value towards the purchase... just as we promised.

3. A RED ONE owner can choose to keep their RED ONE and receive a one-time credit of 12% on a Scarlet system purchase.

Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as "Executed". It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future."

What I am suggesting is that you do in fact choose #2 - full credit towards EPIC - skip #3 and pay full price for Scarlet S35 - work your way towards the Epic upgrade while getting your feet wet in the DSMC system - get it??

guess if its possible to buy a scarlet and upgrade at the same time...this would be cool.

i hope this time the delivery process of the brains and assecoires will not be like the 1st time.
---the signs are good that this will not happen again.
if you order today you will get everything you order.

I would certainly assume you can BUY A SCARLET AT FULL PRICE and THEN UPGRADE TO EPIC LATER - as long as the upgrade is allowed - which is what I am suggesting for folks "on the fence" - I'm sure they will announce more details of that kinda stuff sooner than later -

full price and upgrade is the way....but then maybe the people who have serials between lets say 3000-4000 or delivery date between 08/08 -10/08 are going crazy because someone can buy 2 cameras before he even has the chance to choose....
because of this reason i hope there will be no delivery problems once the cams are available----or a red owner has to choose between scarlet and epic and then wait until all the owners decided and then order regulary a cam and get to the end of the line

imo the 12% discount doesnt make much of a difference...for me the diffenerence is time.

Mark, this is exactly my plan. I'll buy a SCARLET S35 next summer without discount and together with my 18-50 Zoom I'll have a very compact and light solution for handhelds. My R1 will be for other format options than 16:9 and backup for SCARLET.

When we'll have all the final details for EPIC brains and they are nearly ready to ship, so more or less Spring 2010, I'll trade in my R1 for a new EPIC brain, FF35 or 645. The good thing is I'll never loose money with my R1, at least until 2010.

Hopefully I can use my "early believer credit", #598, in the waiting game for both, SCARLET and EPIC.

This is exactly what I am planning.

Get Scarlet S35 and use it as B camera.

I am till trying to decide about which Epic to trade in my Red One for. S35 or FF35? I don't need full frame but I want the extra DNR and 16bit processing.

For those who plan to not keep their RED One or financially can't support two cameras, etc... I would recommend keeping the R1 rather than making the shift to Scarlet. However, if an eventual upgrade to EPIC or if the DSMC system is far more appealing to someone than keeping their R1, they may do best to sell the R1 rather than hold on to two cameras and wait for the eventual trade-in.

I think Jim's offer of the 12% discount on a scarlet purchase is very generous. However, I fear that resale value on a R1 body will be a lot less if that body's upgrade option has already been executed. Your R1 will be worth more to you as an EPIC trade-in or to someone looking for a used R1 that will eventually upgrade to EPIC.

Personally, my plan is to trade-up my RED One for an EPIC FF35 when the time comes. In the mean time, I will most likely buy a Scarlet or two at full price. However, I may opt to simply trade-in the RED One for the EPIC S35 and then buy the FF35 EPIC later.

Am I right in assuming that one could choose option #3, and then option #1 as well?

For me, FF35 Scarlet is much, much more appealing, mostly because it can shoot 3K @ 60fps, but also because of the increased DR of Monstro.

S35 Scarlet (assuming the specs stay the same, which I think they will) can only shoot 2K @ 60 fps, which is more like actual 720p resolution after de-Bayering. This alone is a dealbreaker for S35 for me, and I suspect for others here as well, once they think about it. For commercials, some features, and especially music vids, legit overcranking is mandatory.

IMO, the best bet would be to keep shooting on Red One and be patient enough to wait for FF35 Scarlet, unless you absolutely need to go for S35 for some reason. People waiting for FF35 should be prepared for delays, though, as Mark pointed out in the OP.

Hi Tom,

I think your overlooking the huge advantage of a camera that boots in 2 seconds over one that takes well over a minute. I think power consumption will be lower so batteries will last longer.

Stephen

I don't get it. Why would S35 Scarlet boot in seconds, but FF35 takes a 60 seconds? That doesn't sound right to me.
