  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm starting to get this feeling that Steve Jobs is drunk on iphone sales and is overlooking FCP and general apple support for something this revolutionary.
WHEN will there be any information about native R3D support for Apple/FCP.
Most of us work with FCP. Are we all going to have to move to Adobe?
 
FCP/Color R3D 4K+ native support at NAB 2009.

That's about usual FCP upgrade timing every two years
 
I have a feeling Apple is turning to shit... New Macbooks are terrible and they are selling iPhone 3g, which isn't any better than generation 1, at $199, oh and not updating Final Cut.

This company is getting way to comfortable with not moving ahead.

I love Apple products, but you have to agree that they aren't on a good road for video and audio professionals lately, and seem only to think about iPhones and iPods... Shall we? :

- Glossy screens in Macbook Pro's.
- No firewire on Macbook, no Firewire400 on Macbook Pro.
- New 24" Apple Cinema Display has no firewire, and is glossy.
- Both the Macbook Pro and the ACD have the properiatary MiniDisplay port, forcing people to buy expensive adapters.
- They have now discontinued the 23" matte ACD.

And considering the development of Adobe, they have moved very slowly with Final Cut Studio.

Don't get me wrong, I really love their products. I would never want to go back to Windows, I really love Mac OSX. But their hardware is failing in specs, and Final Cut Studio is beginning to get behind also. (Although it still is a great piece of software, and they have a very strong asset with having Color in their package). I like using Final Cut Studio more then Adobe Premiere, but you can't deny that the workflow that Adobe is showing of with RED is impressive, and they have done it in much less time then Apple.
I really hope there will be someone there in Cupertino that will change some policies. I really love their iPhone and iPod too, but the Mac should still be their flagship product.

I am all Mac here and am disappointed in the "new" macbooks and the lack of real update in functionality in the iPhone.

Looking forward to NAB then if a new Final Cut Suite appears.
 
Using FCP has ALWAYS, since 1999, been an act of faith that they will get the feature you want eventually.

They NEVER pre-announce. They NEVER give a roadmap. They just drop the info, and then ship the new version 3-4 months later, sometimes sooner.

It has been this way for TEN years. It's super frustrating, but that's the way it is. Moreover, for the last 4 years, they've been announcing the new version at NAB every 2 years.

So it's understandable to want info and be scared. I'm scared and I want info. But I don't expect it before April 20, 2009, 9am PST.
 
I will wait until NAB'09 and if FCS 3 does not totally and unequivocally knock my socks off, I am done with Final Cut.

I am, however, sensing that FCS 3 will be a barn burner and it will be the talk of NAB. Well, after a little company that rhymes with TED.

Actually, check that. I anticipate the talk of NAB being ALL about RED. All post software companies will tout is their new ease-of-use when working with redcode. It sure will be a RED-themed NAB this year, more than ever before.
 
Another thing...

Apple HAS pre-announced info about the next version of the OS that would have impact on FCP. Quicktime X, and the ongoing development of NVIDIAs CUDA are all potential ways to solve native debayering.

Another part of Apple's history is to not go with a quick, application-only way to solve a problem. Projects created in Motion are actually decoded in Quicktime, using the GPU. My prediction would be that they are working on a system-wide debayering framework available to ALL Quicktime applications, that relies on Quicktime X and on GPU processing.

This would have benefits for iPhoto and Aperture as well. You can see where I'm going with this. So for all this to happen, Snow Leopard and Quicktime X have to be in place. 3 different projects, all waiting on eachother for completion. Might take a minute.
 
Here's hoping Quicktime X solves ALL THE FRIGGIN GAMMA ISSUES!!!

Just a bit of correction. DisplayPort is not proprietary it's from VESA.

Apple isn't the first company to use DP either. Dell has had a DP monitor for months. Apple's the first to use the mini DP connector to my knowledge.

Glossy vs Matte is a tough one. Let's not fool ourselves and expect color accuracy rivaling a Pro monitor in a laptop but a Pro laptop should come with a choice. I'm pissed that the 13" Macbook doesn't have FW either because I'm an audio guy and FW audio interfaces are the best.
 
I think we are stranded with the state of the art gun and no ammo or at least shitty ammo. It doesn't look to good. Red cannot depend on Apple who's focus is ipods and iphones to make a machine that will keep up with this new technology. Hell, they can't even get 4k to run and that's been announced for some time.

I'd like to see RED or someone else step in and create 4k displays and a better workflow.
 
Beeing a long time FCP user after some CS3 tests I've started using it and actually the only software from the FCP suite I use is Color.

I see the CS3 workflow more robust and flexible.
The integration with all the CS3 Applications makes it complete... almost... Color like application still missing.

Agreed. If NAB 09 isn't a huge coming out party for RED consider me beyond shocked. I think everyone is going to want a piece of this action here. I also think Final Cut Studio 3 is going to close any gaps that exist with competitors. By the time Epic and Scarlet ship. We'll have the next generation of CPU in Core i7, 10.6 with GPU support to die for and hopefully a more robust Quicktime X foundation that will truly excel at modern codecs and of course the ability to keep those cores near max working hard for us.
