  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

I think the idea of a fixed lens is that it is integrated into the brain, so no, it would NOT accept a lens mount of any kind...

Integrated to what point?
It is mounted the same way to the brain as the other mounts are.

From my perspective it seems a fixed lens, is only fixed in terms of the fact that you cant mount another lens on this without buying the optional lens mounts they offer.

As for it actually connecting to the circuits on the inside, you may have a point...I really dont know.

Peace

lets hope its around those price range. but i'd guess attaching a glass on that lil monster would cost more in terms of materials wouldn't it ?

You would think so, BUT...

Again, I may be wrong...but if they were going to do the 2k for 2k, (and then 3k for 2k), I dont see what has changed...so in effect they will be giving us the scarlet at the low end they originally told us about. (With the exception that you may be able to pop that fixed lens off the brain, I know doesnt sound logical when using those words...but its only fixed in that it wont accept other lenses as is...and then you can buy some other lens mounts and screw it on.)

We will find out, but it seems this low end model is coming out a bit after the higher end models...(to bad, would love to get my hands on it, but patience is a good thing.) :)

peace

All I can say is that I am completley blown away by the products that Red has announced, all I can say for now as I let all this info settle in and process through my "brain". Thank you to everyone at Red, and most of all to Jim for having the desire to change the camera market forever. You guys rock, now to figue out how to afford all these toys.

you've changed the world. the only piece of photographic gear I have that's not just been obsoleted is my Point & Shoot :)

this announcement goes orders of magnitude past anything i was even imagining.

dylan. i bet you'll just be able to use the S35mm lenses on the better FF35 sensor with more dynamic range, as an option. should be easy enough. you would use the same sensor, just less of it with S35mm lenses. like shooting with 16mm lenses in 4K or something.....

The next generation electric car should be built like this.

Completely modular and upgradeable.

I hope Jim Jannard has some friends in the auto industry.

This type of thinking and business model can totally revitalize the American empire.

Fucking A. Count on me to purchase about 4 S35 Scarlets. One for myself, and 3 for the Dept I work in at UC Berkeley.

But they seem to only have Red, Canon or Nikon mounts?

They should include PL as an option.

Sheesh do I ever feel ungrateful! :-)

canon doesn't have a prayer. REDCODE RAW is the reason.

We've had a lot worse codecs making pretty videos for years. There's going to be a TON of content destined for the web only. A TON.

RedCode and faster framerates are not worth the extra $10K for a lot of people. H.264 is the same codec BlueRay can be delivered in and it looks great to most people. You just need to convert it to Cineform or Prores in order to work with it in post. I'm sure David Newman's got a post solution for the Canon brewing.

The Canon is not a real competitor for the $100k+ movie... but I'm talking 35mm lens adapter crowd here.

The body only price likely does NOT include a lens mount. If the idea of the fixed lens being removable (implying the presence of a mount) were the case, then the only difference between the fixed version and the mount version would be the addition of the lens (with its own built-in mount), so why have two versions? This would also be another reason for the fixed-lens version to be more expensive than the mount version...

Exactly! I'm sure the new 'brains' and firmware will be able to handle any crop or scaling from any sensor.

I'm sure the exclusion of a PL mount on that camera is an oversight - although PL lenses typically cover S35, not FF35!

I think with at least 7 different brains coming u p , Red could take a look and give us a little more info on how they will handle sales in the future...

It would indeed be a little silly if we all had to wait a long time before we could actually own the camera bodies.

The addiction to this forum has already cost some of us a lot of time and it was very cool to follow this on a regular base, but I don't wanna see myself repeating this all over and be following this all the time, because that would'nt be to good for business...

It's the excitement that brought us here in the first place , but I suppose it's up to Red with their experience to move up things a little faster.

The release dates are a little late to what I was expecting, but they're still ok if,
a) The camera has already been tested or is mostly based on the Red one and problems would'nt come us as easy as the first time.
b)The codecs are stable and rock steady from the release
c)all needed features are enabled as we expect not having to go throught development like with the R1
d)Development has been talking to Assimilate (which is probably still ahead), and Assimilate is offering a workflow maby even with Adobe from Day 1 when they are released.

I know this could be too much asked,
but I think with the given timeframe and experience they have learned,
maby with attracting some more people in the team, these things should be taken care off in advance...

Gotta be. The lens mounts should be modular between EPIC and Scarlet. If RED really crippled the Scarlet some 3rd party will be machining those up pretty quickly. RED would just be spitting into the wind on that one. I don't believe it. Plus RED sells PL lenses.

Jim, Jarred and the entire RED team- Congratulations! All your hard work is evident in this monumental announcement. Hats off to you for doing what no other company dared to do. Can't wait to buy one of these babies and start having fun!

Crop on 6k 35FF epic would render sub 4 k output wouldn't it? 6K/1.6=3.75...
still get the DR though...

Good morning boys!

Mounts probably are compatible between bodies of the same sensor format; again, it may be that mounts for some of the smaller formats would result in the lens bodies crashing into and damaging the sensors...

The PL mount may simply not be possible with a FF35 sensor format.

EF-S glass cannot be used on an EF mount for this reason...
