  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Slightly Saddened About today's Announcement

I am excited about today's announcement of red's products... just not the exchange program.

& Here's why.

I am sad that my redone has become $10.5k (s35 scarlet), and $5.5k (FF35 scarlet) cheaper for a much, much better camera.

- the scarlet can do 3k @120 fps. which is 1k more resolution than my current redone at 120fps.
- the scarlet is 7 lbs lighter.
- the scarlet can do 1K more than my current redone's capabilities at the same frame-rates.
- High-End scarlet can do 2k more resolution than my current redone at the same frame-rates.
- the scarlet shoots less compressed videos than my current red-one.
- High-End scarlet can do FullFrame 35mm.
- High-End scarlet can do 2 or more stops than my current red-one.
- High-End Scarlet is 16 bit... unlike my current redone that is 12.

And do all that, and be 1/3rd the size of my current red-one's body.


And what saddens me is that I can't give up my Red one for a better and lighter camera that costs 10 or 5 grand cheaper.. i have to pay another $6K (S35 brain) and $10k (FF35 brain) more for it.

And if you really look close... I mean... baseline model Epic... another $10.5K for what..
- "redcode 225" much less compressed / but needs waaaay more storage.
- 1k more of resolution.
- shoot 100fps at 5k.
- minute mm of sensor real-estate.

---------------------------- Hence...

- is the extra $10.5 grand worth the upgrade for a baseline Epic?
- Swapping your current redone for a FF35 or a S35 Scarlet for not more than $2.5k and $2k sounds more reasonable.

I've got 4 redone's I can execute any number of them and get a discount on what I want. It's just weird... how a redone is worth 17.5k to swap for an Epic... OR give you a 12% discount (less than $1.5k for a FF35.. I mean if you get a FF35 scarlet... why would you want to keep your unmatched heavy red-one?)
 
RED ONE users are definitely going to have some tough choices to make. We have a long time to keep using our cameras, though, while we work the existing technology, think about it, and save up some money...

I've got plenty of money.. it's just that the 12% deal makes sense for the scarlets upto $2.5k .. not the higher end models - they really compete with the current red-one.
 
compete is not even the right word.. they beat the current red-ones... They are like Red Three's .. full frame sensors, 1/3rd the size! less compression! thats going 3 generations ahead!
 
REDONE is still same good old camera as yesterday. The news that RED is a company that develop new and better products is GOOD :) ..and there is the trade-in, upgrade or discount option too.

The trade-in is only for select cameras. Why can't we "trade-in" for the slightly better ones too.

For what it's worth, they are quoting maximum resolution including lookaround- i.e Red one is listed as 4.5k
So will Red really do full 3k 16:9 at 120fps? Who knows at this stage?

you complain about .... what? About RED continuing developement?
That was somehow predictable.

My R1 will be in service for a very long time. I´ve seem my RED footage being projected on an IMAX screen from HDCAM SR tapes. My main attraction to RED was 35mm DOF. So I´m not thinking too much about upgrading to EPIC or down- / side- / left- grading to Scarlet untill autumn next year.

I´m as surprised by the new stuff as anybody here, but the 2 year wait for R1 I spent shooting HDV. This wait is going to be much more comfortable.

At least you could say , there not handling you as sony would do. So you still have plenty of time to get your investment way back on other ways .

With SOny or other camera manufacturers , we'd never be prepared of what's coming up and when without losing a lot of money for a little quality upgrade...
 
Akube, you will get good two years out of RED before all will be ready and out of Beta.
Three years of use of equipment when revolution is going on is good return on investment.

We do amortize all equipment on the books in 18 months for business plan purposes anyway.
 
If you have a RED ONE : You should be making money out of it every day. Its a PRO camera, not a home consumer camera. Example, Just because you are promised a better job in 12 months time, does it mean you should stop working now and wait 12 months ? Most of the early RED OWNERS already made zillions dollars since they got their Red One.

If you have a RED ONE that you bought just because of the novelty of it (ie ... its cool, I am a wannabe filmmaker/Director ...etc), then yeah you have too much money in your hand, therefore stop complaining. No purchase in anything in this world is eternal.

Does this announcement made RED ONE obsolete ? Definitely YES. Does this make the RED ONE value dropped in the USED MARKET ? Absolutely.

But can the Scarlet or Epic make you money or advance your art now ?? NO, the soonest I think will be 2010. IMHO, at least RED should offer Red One owners free upgrade to mysterium X sensor.

As a matter of fact, I am still planning to get the RED ONE, because god knows when the Scarlet and Epic are finally going to be ready. Want to sell me your RED ONE ??? PM ME :sorcerer:

I think this is extremely good, and very generous. Sony, Panasonic or any other would NEWER do this.
 
What RED has done.. is freggin awesome... seriously.. I am pumped with the specs.. ive made a thousand calls to all the guys who were just about to get ex3's and told em to stop.. hell.. I was gonna order some for the FilmQuip and I called finance dept to stop printing the LPO's... But seriously.. there should be a trade-in program for the higher-end scarlets. Red said they wont make a camera that would Compete with the current Red One... Red Resisted for soooo long to add a changeable mount on scarlet so that it wont Compete with the current red-one.

the reservations are over... voila.. scarlet all of a sudden competes with redone.. and kicks its ass. for a flashlight of a camera that has a fixed lens.. to a camera that beats our ol' Idea of an Epic.

Like you've I've invested in Red One and we should not lose sight of the fact that it is in our hands now and we are filming with it, getting tangible results. Moore's law seems to now be at play as much with cameras as computers - every two years processing power will double and costs halve.

While today there are forecast prices for most the Scarlet and Epic "brains", we still don't have prices for all the various modules that build the brains up to a complete configuration. At the end of the day, when all the numbers are crunched, we may just decide that a 4K Red One (with or without a sensor upgrade) is the best unit for our needs for many years to come.

I'm still happy with my investment. Over the years I've acquired (in order) a Canon EX1, Canon XL1, Sony PD-150 and Sony-Z1 and I don't see either of these compies offering me a trade-in, let alone a full trade-in on their latest offerings.

Guys you are getting me wrong.. I am not against the news release.. I am not saddened that history was made again today by red.. I am rather happy.

I just Wish for a better exchange program. Not that the CURRENT PROGRAM IS BAD.. ITS FREGGIN PERFECT. ONLY... it could be better if there was a trade-in program for the higher-end scarlets

... and Obin...

If my red one was taken away from me... I'll be like a 4 yr old kid high on kitkat and mountain dew.
 
If I can trade the R1 for 17,5K in echange of a scarlet FF 35+ 5000$ of accessories who goes with, that's fine.

sony's, canon's.. etc.. they have a sustainable value. when i bought a sony z1. a year later.. i sold it for a 100 bucks less on ebay. the same with my current xh-a1. a year later i sold my xh-a1 for $200 less.

True.. the red-one will still kick ass for the following year. But the year after, .. should you decide to go for a FF35 scarlet, or an Epic.. you save more on an Epic.. whereas you don't save much should you get a scarlet. why can't we save some on getting a slighter upgrade for a scarlet? what if a year from now... you thought that hey.. Harddisk prices are still up.. getting an Epic is not that feasible... scarlet FF35 sounds like a better upgrade.. why can't you get a better deal on that?

And who would want to buy a heavier scarlet? the redone's pricepoint has depreciated.. and it will depreciate drastically when the scarlet hits the streets..
