I just saw this post on craigslist here in Vancouver - and it got me wondering about what basic Red packages (no lenses) rent for in various markets?
Anyone care to share some "typical" rates in their city and part of the world (N.A., Euro, Asia, etc.)?

299 a day!!! lol.... Feel free to rent all you want at 299 a day. I'm at $850 w a full package and that's where I'll stay.

That guy is insane. There is easily $100,000 in gear there which will take him more than 300 days to pay off at that rate, much less turn a profit. He's simply an idiot if he is charging those prices.

Wow - I'll rent his package and rent it to someone else and make a nice profit :-)

Hope he doesn't come here -

We rent the complete package with a person and B/U body AND off load station for $1500/day - No alteration of package available.

Cassavetes doesn't require 2 FF units either.

4 bricks...? I have six, wish I had ten.

He's probably on B15 still....

More power to him -

We're also at $1500/day with a camera tech/DIT.

OK, the competition has forced me to do this...

Full RED kit with tripod, handheld rig and steadicam w/operator, an assortment of lenses, including a Cooke 18-100mm zoom and a full set of Arri UltraPrimes.

$250/day $700/week. $2000/month

DISCLAIMER: This offer only valid on the sixth tuesday of every month and must be redeemed at your momma's house from the Easter Bunny. Additional 10% discount if you can answer the Tooth Fairy's trivia question of the day.

Hi,

With many thousands of cameras delivered, both rental & second hand values will be dictated by market forces. I know that the Price of a Digital Beta Camera has dropped to about 400, half of a year ago.

In all seriousness, I think this $299 rate has lots of hidden costs. But different markets will demand different pricing and marketing strategies. As an example, I have a hard time marketing the equipment around here. I focus on services and production value and rarely ever make an issue over what equipment is used. People hire me/my company and it's at my discretion which equipment I use to get the job done.

I've been doing some small jobs lately where the RED is being used and they're 3 hour gigs where I literally shoot 2 or 3 minutes of footage. It's an odd deal for an existing business relationship and swapping favors I guess. I'm charging $300 for each of those sessions, but I honestly can't charge more for what it is and it's just one of those things where it's lumped in with other business dealings. I could use any camera, but the RED just happens to be a good choice for the job... Unless I can find a killer deal on a Vision Research V-series for ramping up the frame rates. But that so far is out of budget for this particular task. For now, anyway.

I've said here in other places, I don't typically rent out my gear. I prefer that I or someone I specifically choose are the only ones running my equipment. I'm not trying to be a rental house or trying to pay off gear through rentals. Just seems like a good way to lose money or go insane unless you have enough equipment to supply some decently large productions. Just trying to rent out a small RED kit and not much of anything else is going to doom you to being a bottom-feeder in the market.

Making money with your equipment is about providing value and services. Concentrate on that and you will do fine. The fact that you may also own a camera and some gear is just an added bonus to those who hire you.

A set of 35mm lenses over here are around £250/day by themselves (that's about $400)!! I can't see how this guy is making money...unless there are hidden costs - maybe he charges $1000 a day for his DIT skills :)

Red rental cost

Red rental cost

Why is any one surprised by this?
I was hoping being one of the earlier one to at lest get most of my costs back or even a larger portion of such.
But right away people would undercut the rental price and at the higher end there is one team that has locked down those contracts for the foreseeable future.
Most of the Canadian, Vancouver based producers here have figured this out and have started to really grind. DOP's are now expected to have full camera kits, like a tool set. With little compensation for this.
Expect this to become standard every where.
And in any town that has even a small concentration of cameras this will happen faster, there are more camera then work until the overall need goes up. Such as the range of ideas, documentaries, story's methods etc where seeing being made now, but not in the amounts needed.
film school kids now expect 4k no less and for super cheap. No matter how much you explain that the overall cost of the gear is higher it doesn't sink in.
There was a log jam on HD till red got it going again, but the cost is going to drop with better cameras. And not a little. A lot. Bet on it.
there are now more red camera in existence then panavison cameras and i think even Sony HD 900 and 950 systems.
And we've seen the first of a new generation of still / HD level movie cameras, and that will only get better and better. Imagine as good resolution as RED one, and access to more cheap lens then you could ever use...
How long is it before they add frame rates [I.E. 24 to 120 fps] better latitude, some sort of sound sync or even sound? All at current still camera cost. How long before the dealers and manufacturers realize this and offer ever kind of gear for these units?
There already has been a mock up from red rock mini and prolost...

Its both a beautiful and terrifying thing to think that in the next ten years cost could drop that a good basic movie package is within any one grasp. Like good art supplies or after effects in cost, what will emerge out of that? Skill, good images with a artistic flare will be the sell able commodity.
what in a sense we are already seeing with RED ONEs release.

Ive had to keep this in mind in the last five months before i make a silly gear fetish buy or how i plan to use it.
