Thought I'd put this out there as a request if anything.
I keep running into the need to erase shot clips off the media CF or drive. Similar to the P2 cameras ability to select a shot or a few in the MCR mode and delete them.
This would be a great help, is it a function that can be incorporated into the release build 17 or next one after that?

Noooooooooo!

Please don't enable this booby trap.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

You could have three "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS? Yes/No" Screens for safety. It shouldn't scare anyone. Just about every still or motion camera that records to compact flash has this feature. Just the other day, I must have hit the record button twice (stop then start) filled up my last empty CF drive with garbage with no way to delete.

I agree, If they do it properly and give you 2-3 chance to make sure you want to delete it its a handy feature to have. If you still manage to delete it by misteak, well... didims..

ths gets brought up fairly often and always gets shut down. I'm pretty sure it's RED's official position that this will not be implemented in a future build. But hey "everything is subject to change" ;)

OH, HELL NO!

Buy more CF cards.

I dont hear any stills photographer complain.
Every photo camera I know can delete files. I guess the aversion of motion camera operators comes from not having been able to do this before (because of film or tape).
You´ll get used to it. Maybe even use it sometimes. Just like the analog stills guys.

If it is a too scary thing for you, maybe RED could implement a preference option somewhere to permanently disable it.

I agree with the preference option. I remember reading an article about Fincher on Zodiac, and how he'd do 70 takes of Gyllenhaal running down an alley, constantly just deleting the previous take. Guess it's a feature Fincher wants.

Actually, on tape you can do it - rewind and record over it.

I would also like this option. Make it an option that has tone enabled in a buried menu, if you must. But this would be of great help to anyone shooting out in the field with a small crew.

Thanks.

I really like NOT having this option. I've experienced disasters with missing shots in cameras where this was available. I say treat it like film. What's shot is shot. Offload or swap the mag, then delete it in post. A $200 CF card/$900 Drive is not worth more than a $$,$$$ shot.

Nothing is safe ......

I´ve had 31 cf cards on set.
Good procedure of dumping, backing up and recycling.

I thought.

Guess what? Somehow one card got written over before the dump...
The result of 4 people involved (Dop, 2 AC´s, DIT), hectic set and 3 a.m. ....

What I´m saying is: Check twice and check again.
Apart from that: More options is better.
And I like the decisiveness (does this word exist?) of hitting delete - it sends the message of: "No! We dont have it. Yet!"

Jochen
(Yes, I know about the joy of discovering stuff in the outtakes. I´m talking about real garbage)

Loosing clips to corrupt drives and faulty handling is un-avoidable. The risk will always exist adding such a feature won't change that. Saying no to this feature is like saying no to in camera formats of media.
The fact that we can delete unwanted clips will make life easier for logging purposes. Plus the advantage of gaining that extra bit of storage space on cards and drives is huge. P2 cameras have this feature, after using it many times I have yet to loose a clip to an unintentional deletion.
I think this gives us more control over our data and helps us get rid of superfluous material.

With that option many people get involved in a missing footage scenario. please don't give us that option.

YES!

I was just complaining that I couldn't do this the other day.

PLEASE!

Why not have the option - and have it selected in the menus?

This should be an option on a digital camera (of any nature). It's up to operators/users to manage the media (anyway).
