  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new macbook pro 15"

So are you guys saying FW800 is downward compatible with 400 simply with a cable adaptor? Damn! That was the one reason why I didn't need the new MBP!

Yes. Many FW800/400 drives come with them now for users who don't have FW800 ports. I guess the 800 and 400 share some of the same pins and are backward compatible.

A lot of the event was about pretty cosmetic things like the new manufacturing process for the shell...that went on for ages...yawn! We want features!! The graphics thing was vaguely interesting, as was the SSD upgrade option and the new track pad but none of it was particularly earth-shattering. They seem more intent on taking away options (like the firewire 400 port!) rather than adding them. Apple are gradually taking their eye off the ball in so many ways...I wonder if it's anything to do with the rumour that his Steveness is beginning his withdrawal from the company?

I've been waiting for the new MacBook Pro's for some time now and overall I'm rather dissapointed with yesterdays Apple announcements.

In no particluar order:

No HDMI
:poster_oops: - I think this is simply down to cost...HDMI requires a license and Display Port does NOT, making it cheaper + it's being adopted by most computer monitor manufacturers as the replacement for DVI. Overall, this is not a deal breaker for me as Display Port to HDMI adapters are available + it should be able to output audio as well as video making it possible to hook up the new MacBook Pro's to LCD and Plasma displays for client demos etc.

No Blu Ray drives  - WHAT!!!!This is a MAJOR disappointment for me and I really don't understand what Apple are thinking here. Again they blamed this partially on cost for licensing, but why not simply make Blu Ray drives available as an option and that way the profit from it! The MacBook Pro is aimed at pro users and MANY of them are media professionals who need Blu Ray, so I just don't understand this at all!

No FW3200 or E Sata - FW3200 is not officially released yet, so I can understand this. Believe me if it was in there, Apple would have used this as a MAJOR marketing point during yesterdays press launch. E Sata - this would have been a nice addition but it doesn't really worry me too much as we can connect using an Express card adapter.

No Matte Screens  - I really don't like glossy screens. Yes, they have more contrast and in ideal light conditions, video looks wonderful and more vibrant, BUT I use this thing to work and find the reflections from glossy screens way too distracting. I have a feeling that the way the new notebooks are constructed may prohibit the use of matte screens but until I see one up close it's impossible to say.

New Design  - again difficult to say until I actually get up close and personal with one, but initial impressions are good. It looks sleek and sexy but I would like to have seen weight come off and not be added!

WillI buy one? Probably but as always I will let others try first and my credit card will remain hidden until I say some favourable reviews.

Best wishes

Scott

I hope the new macs will have blu-ray when a new FCS comes out?

Gary here picked the first one up out of the Manchester store about 10am this morning. Very nice. more solid. I was unsure about the screen but it's fine.

Seems nippy.. he's off to test the gfx tonight at home :)

Did some testing on the new machine.

The new design is really cool - no two ways about that. It's a little piece of CNC'd awesome.

The glass screen is what it is. I prefer matte screens, but since the option isn't there anymore... no use in complaining.

My biggest concern was the trackpad. I'm so used to clicking with my thumb that losing the button was scaring me. Apple did something smart here: they taught the trackpad to ignore your thumb if you leave it rested on the pad. I started using the trackpad without even thinking about the lack of a button until a few minutes in. I just left my thumb exactly where I normally would and didn't have any unpredictable behavior. I don't expect to break a decade worth of clicking habits... and thankfully Apple didn't expect me to either.

The glass trackpad doesn't feel exactly like the older trackpads, but it doesn't really feel like glass either. It feels fine - it's a non-event.

Contrast ratio. I didn't get the opportunity to compare it with my 2.6's screen, but it looks "fine". It's not significantly better but it's definitely not worse. The field illumination is better on this monitor... a definite plus. The off-angle viewing appears better as well. The old display was fine, but it would lose any and all color accuracy if you were more than a few degrees off axis. This one isn't amazing, but it's fine.

Speed. It's a bit faster I suppose... but my socks are still on. It plays 1/4 medium in REDCINE without thinking twice... even with the histogram pulled up. I haven't tried the QT proxies yet, but my 2.6 had no problem playing the 1K proxies and I don't expect anything different here. It's definitely smoother in REDCINE though. My 2.6 would get all cranky when I started grading footage whereas the 2.8 doesn't seem to mind.

The FW800 bus and EX34 bus seem no faster or slower than the previous revision.

The computer is what it is - an average performance update crammed in a sweet new case. I love that I can access the HD without needing a blowtorch and sawzall.

It's just about what you should expect from a 200MHz improvement with a new graphics card. I want 4 cores!

Re: the new cinema display. It's fine. Better contrast ratio, sexy new design. I'm disappointed in the removal of FireWire from the display. They should've added a FW800 hub to the back of the display instead of just removing the FW400. It's built for "professionals," unfortunately. I'll probably pick up a few of the 30" displays when they get around to building them. Stereo iSight cameras... that's just what my life needed.
