  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

zeiss ZF lens - yes/no?

Is that all you are going to do?!? :w00t:

Thanks man!! Like being there myself! The only one that was short was the 35mm thought I wish the 85mm were a tad longer since it is a longer focal length... still that sucker turns! I can see what the (very nice) guy from RP lenses was saying about the travel on the 100mm!

So let me see... your 100mm was macro, but the rest of your lenses are not right? So they are the "more affordable" versions, right? (wish it were much more :))

Thanks for taking the time to shoot that, cut it, and upload it man! Excellent resource for the thread too!

No problem Roberto. This community has given so much to me - it's nice to give something back.

Correct - the only of the lenses that are macro is the 100.

Here's a few quick'n'dirty shots I took today. I'll be taking more "pro" shots with simple shaded background sometime soon. The lenses in these shots are Zeiss ZF 100, 85, 50, 35 and 25 - in that order. Don't have the 18 - yet :shifty:

Hi tlorenzo

what are you using for FF ?

thanks,
José

Right now I'm just using my Redrock follow focus, but I'm waiting on my Viewfactor Impero/Inclino package to ship and will be using that in both wired and wireless configurations. I might be investing in an ARRI FF4 at some point, but I need to make money with the rig as it is right now before I can buy more gear :)

I guess the best deal for me would be much like DXmetal suggested:

Nikon 17-35mm, 28mm ZF, 50mm ZF (macro) + 85mm ZF

Then the only short focus throw would be in the zoom and the 50 will probably do some nice macros. I wonder how tight you can get with the 50mm though.

Does the f2 50mm macro have a longer throw than the normal f1.4 50mm ?

The 50 makro has approx 300 degree turn. I believe the 1.4 is shorter.

Also, my impression is that the 50 makro is sharper. See reviews on photozone and slrgear.

From Tlorenzo's video it seems his 1.4f 50mm turns about 200 degrees. A little more light or a little more throw and macro capabilities.

Thanks for posting that link Nils.

"Macro
Macro purists may object to the fact that the image reproduction ratio for this lens is in fact only 1:2 (0.5x); images are not reproduced as ''life-size'' on the sensor. However, it performs very well in this capacity, with a minimum close-focusing distance of 24 cm (just under 10 inches). This is from the image plane, so taking into account the length of the lens, this means you can be as little as 3 1/2'' away from your subjects. The width of the subject area at closest focus is 45mm on a sub-frame sensor body, and 70mm on full-frame sensor body."

What do they mean by "sub-frame" sensor body?
If that is a 45mm with on S35 that is plenty macro for me!

More from the review that Nils linked us to:

"Alternatives

Carl Zeiss 50mm ƒ/1.4 Planar T* ~$500
Very different animals, the 50mm macro is much sharper at ƒ/2, but at ƒ/2.8 the tables are turned and the 50mm ƒ/1.4 is sharper. By ƒ/4, we see similar performance between the two lenses. CA results are decided better for the macro lens, but with CA removal on the D3, the results are similar. Corner shading is similar between the two lenses, but the 50mm ƒ/1.4 distorts just slightly more."

How do you like your Nikon 14mm ? Is it as good as the ZF ?

It´s good, but far from perfect. Not so sharp in the corners, and the mechanics are certainly not up to ZFs. The bulging front element and lens cap-sock makes it less practical to use than my other lenses. But it´s good. I use it all the time.

The inexpensive Tokina 11-16mm will probably perform better, but you´ll need the Underdahl-mount.

I understand that not all the ZF lenses can have the canon EF mount. Any one know if there are any plans to implement EF on them all ?

Im in a dilema to order a set of Canon L primes or ZF primes. I like the idea of an electronic interface to the Canon lenses but also am keen on Zeiss glass.

so what is the best lens on Nikon mount for 10mm to 15mm range ?
preferably prime rather than zoom, before I go to the Underdahl-mount route

I did try the Nikon 14mm, red shirt become orange-ish (if there's such a word), while it's perfectly red using 18mm ZF.

as soon as i get back from a job im going on (back the 31'st)

I'm curious about pulling focus with these in comparison to PL mount lenses (S4's or Ultra Primes).

for me.. it doesnt matter..
i dont concider myself a 1st, but i can pull focus if i have too.. and i am use to nikon lenses since i came from the adapter world...

but they have little gears that will reverse it back to cine..

What does the "cinevise" do to the lenses? I'm thinking gear-rings and screw-on front end and possibly removal of the iris clicks? Basically like RP Lens offers to do. What's the price of this kind of retrofitting?
