Did Jim reveal Epic's sensor size today?

Am I correct to assume that this means both sensors will be the same size? If Epic's sensor was larger (say, Vista Vision or 65mm), then Red One glass would not work on Epic, right?

Kind of like how Canon EF lenses can work on EF-S cameras (with a 1.6 crop factor), but EF-S lenses cannot work on larger-sensor EF bodies. :detective2:

Sounds right to me. I'm kinda wondering if RED II will merge with EPIC and Scarlet will merge with the still camera... and become more like RED. Hmmm....

Well, it's possible that, although the RED One RED glass worked with the 3-perf 35mm, it's possible that it's actual coverage is larger, setting up the Epic to be 4-perf.

RED does it already... 5K@100fps could just be for the s35 area of the sensor :bleh:
Nikon and Sony also do it in their DSLRs. It's quite possible in this case... Just like RED One with S16 or B4 glass.
I'm not saying it will happen, only that it can.

Yeah, you have a point.

It just seems very unlikely to me at this point that Jim is going to make a Vista Vision sized sensor with Epic. My guess is that Epic is aimed at cleaning house in the cinema camera market, and rightly so. It's ripe for a 5K, no-holds-barred, full-on S35 (4:3?) camera that will simply begin to replace chemical 35mm cameras on a massive scale... and at a staggering rate. The price will be much higher than Red One.... again, rightfully so.

All of us who would love to see Jim make a Vista Vision, 65mm, or IMAX sensor camera, will have to wait for that as a separate project, I think. I pay very close attention to what Jim says, and I'm now 95% convinced that Epic will have the same sized sensor as Red One, with a possibility of it also being 4:3 ratio.

also consider that the new camera (DSMC) will record motion. My guess is that it will be at least a full frame still sensor. I would think RED could make that image move (considering the use of redcode).

I think Epic will be aimed squarely at the high-end cinema market, with all the luxuries big-budget, ASC-type guys are accustomed to. If so, it will spark a rapid, exponential shift from film to digital.

One crazy thing about all this, however, is that DSMC could literally come in with "higher" specs than Epic in some respects. For example, DSMC might have a full-frame, Vista-Vision-sized sensor, while Epic has only S35mm (hopefully 4:3).

These are crazy and exciting times for those of us who are fascinated with all the new tools that will allow us to capture images never before possible. I was up late last night with a friend and fellow forum member literally dreaming up brand-new ways to use this emerging technology (especially high ASA/ISO ratings) for shots that have never, ever been done by anyone, ever, because the technology simply was not there.

Ok maybe the sensor would be like this: Super 35 mm - 1.33:1 sized sensor in 5K/6K (6K in the new sensor program?)
By using non-anamorphic lenses you crop top and bottom to desired ratio.
If using anamorphic lenses you use the whole area. Maybe I got this wrong or could it work this way?
