Rian Johnson Strikes Back (again):
http://www.rcjohnso.com/REDFACTS.html

"straight talk on the technical realities of the Red camera"

Is he accurate?

Is he full of it?

Only the techies know...

He seems to have a cognitive dissonance moment here:

"F23 and Genesis, in their usual configuration record 1.9 megabytes per frame in SQ mode or 3.8 megabytes per frame in HQ mode,"

Okay, but he admits:

"A DPX file of Red Camera's pixel dimensions (4096x2304) is 36 megabytes per frame."

His entire rant rests upon 2 implications:

1) Red's 36MB DPX frame is inferior because it was from a more compressed source.

2) Red doesn't meet the 10 bit per channel / 30 bit color data required for a full quality "standard" cinema image.

(It looks like Red is 12 bit per channel though, but he implies otherwise...)

The line has been drawn.

i dont get it, I'm a Rian fan. Brick kicked ass. What happened to motivate this Anti RED crusade?

I haven't read the article so I won't speculate about it's content, but it seems weird he spend so much time on it.

I'm with you. It's just odd that so much energy went into this. It's like a political discussion.

Most of the techie info is over my head, but I thought his argument at the end about RAW data was very weak. The idea that Sony just "bakes in the metadata" at a different time than RED is absurd and silly. To have control of this data in post is a HUGE advantage for RED over making all decisions on set when you're running around worrying about 50 different things.

It seemed like a well thought out article, but ultimately, I look at the image we're getting and the price we paid and I don't really care about anything he said. :-)

If this guy is such a better moviemaker instead a good trouble maker, he wouldn't be so focused on tech details.

I've gotten this link now a few times from Panavision employees almost like it's marketing to them. Sheesh, that's pretty weak. One of the employees said they'd been feeding Rian info so they could build up the page. They are taking a huge hit on the Genesis from Red and are now fighting back all they can.

dude. if thats true, that is WEAK

To me it's a matter of:
Yup. Please give me a 17.5k body of F23 or Pana that I can have here, and I'll A/B test it....

I don't really care too much if RED is "the best" or not. It's... eh... pretty cool...

And gettin' better.

For some reason Sony hasn't made ONE F23 sale in Norway. Guess that has to do with the performance of the cam.

I think RED is up @ about 60...

LOL. :)

Yeah, pretty sad. The Genesis should be able to stand on it's own without subversive tactics. But then again, it's hollywood and they're very few people here with morals or high standards. ;)

What seems to get by this guy is that most of us don't care about the numbers. We're film makers and DoPs, not tech weenies.

If it looks good, we'll use it.

People are not shooting with RED cause it's 4k. I'd be willing to bet most of us are downconverting anyway.. We're using it cause we like the look.

It's that simple

This seems to go beyond just making a point.

Sure, a lot of people go fanboy the moment people try to say the RED isn't worth it, but the stark contrast he's trying to provide while trying to maintain a neutral perspective is falling short.

Like many others, I think he's a very talented filmmaker as well, but I'm baffled at how he's trying to sell his view. I don't care so much about Sony (not personal), but if Panavision really is in the game we're so used to politicians playing, that's not cool. There are other approaches. Business is business, but if this is how they're doing it, I'm disappointed.

Maybe I just thought too highly of those companies when I was discovering the industry? Maybe not. They still deserve praise, but I think RED has more than earned the right to play.

It would be nice if Graeme or Stuart or someone at RED could reply in terms that make since to everybody to put this report to bed.

We all like the look of RED....but at times we will all that use and love RED.... have to defend it as the camera is still the new kid on the block. It would be good if we had some facts from a tech person at RED in response to this to help understand the spin being shot this way and also be able to reply with facts as Redusers when this is questioned by a production.

what's brick?..

Not a bad article at all.
But I wouldn't swap my RedOne with any of their cameras.
How to "fill" a DPX file in a meaningfull way is a very valid question.

I totally respect the author's point of view.
