There's been a lot of discussion lately about Red's new cameras making the Red One obsolete, that somehow Jim is screwing us out of our new investment. Some people even have the balls to imply that Jim owes us a free upgrade to an entirely new camera so that he can "sleep at night" and not have to worry about pissing us off. You have got to be kidding me.
If you buy a Macbook Pro, do you expect Apple to upgrade your processor because their new versions make yours obsolete?
Jim and company have given us a camera that is more than adequate for any theatrical application for the next ten years (and lets face it, most of the guys bitching don't have a chance of getting theatrical distribution anyways). It sounds like a lot of people bought an inexpensive camera thinking they could rent it out for the price of a Sony 900 or a Varicam. "I'm going to be rich", they thought. Now they're bitching about the market getting "flooded" and people renting out cameras for $500/day.
Well forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I don't think Jim envisioned a camera that would increase profit margins for rental houses. He dreamed of a camera that would create unbelievable images at a price that everyone could afford. He gave us that camera, and it's incredible.
So screw your investment. If you can't use your camera to tell great stories, then sell the damn thing, because there are a hundred kids who can. Jim had a vision. It's not his fault if you don't. He doesn't owe you a damn thing.
