  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lexar 16GB card fast enough?

I've A/B'd the Lexar against the new Sandisks and the Sandisks are a tad faster.

Only RED and Alpha Dog testers have 16 GB capable modules, AFAIK. Besides, Jarred has already said the Extreme IV cards aren't fast enough.

This article here says that Sandisk has upped the data rate on it's Extreme IV cards to 45MB/sec also. So maybe their 8 and 16GB cards would work on the Red now as well.

It also says in the article that it is the fastest Lexar CF card yet, beating the 8GB one that works in the RED and the Sandisk 16GB Extreme IV. So you would think...

On a separate note: the RED 16GB card is now nearly one year late, I remember they were announced for November last year.

But those were the older Extreme IVs that were 266x or 40MB/sec. The article says that Sandisk "quietly updated" the Extreme IVs to 300x or 45MB/sec. I'm just wondering if anyone has tested the newer cards.

Oh.

According to Deanan there are a few of the new modules in the hands of beta testers even now, but I don't know if they would be allowed to test other cards.

With him saying that they had to coordinate with Build 17, I'm wondering if more than just speed is a requirement? And since I don't know enough about the inner workings of a CF card or of RED itself to actually comment intelligently, I think I should not miss this very good opportunity to just shut up.

It is hard to see why these cards wouldn't work - seem to be the same series and technology as the 8 gigs we have been using since Soderburgh shot his movie with them and we bought some from them. Article says the 16s are even faster.

Is there something in the normal CF module that would keep it from working with these higher capacity cards?

I know this would be frustrating for RED if they have invested a lot in their 16gb technology but this is important to us users that have occasional use for CF but need greater than 8gb capacity (like those of us using underwater housings) not to mention everyone else that would like to have a readily available, off the shelf solution.

It also seems that RED's investment wouldn't be completely wasted since it probably has added performance that will be necessary for higher data rates in future, less compressed modes or with scarlet/epic higher data rates. (But that doesn't mean we shouldn't have access to this technology now.)

November? In all fairness I thought it was December.

"Currently, 8GB cards that we will certify are available. We believe that in October we will certify 16GB cards. It seems possible that in Q2 of 2008 32GB cards might become available."

That was last year by Jim...

I have been holding off buying the RED drive because it adds weight and size and because I thought the 16GB were around the corner. I understand things can be difficult but this is getting kind of embarrassing, especially considering other camera manufacturers are showing off 80GB flash drives which do 240MB/s.

Exactly what I thought when I visited the Ikonoskop stand at IBC...

They haven't announced a price yet, but knowing that the camera costs less than €7000 with a lens and one 80GB cartidge included, I guess it will cost between 1000 and 2000 € (that's pure speculation)....
That would be far less expensive than the Red Ram, if it's still $4500 for 64 GB...

I could not confirmation from that that they were actually making the 80GB carts yet.

Are they using MLC or SLC? If their price is low then it's probably MLC.

any official word on this? They seem to be available now.

I'm getting my camera in a couple of days. If I buy the Lexar 16GB 300X and try it out, what should I look for? How do I judge if it is fast enough? Would be great if somebody with a bit more experience with the RED could do a test. And you want it. Right?:)

The cards may not work simply because RED may still have the firmware in the camera limited to only being able to record on the Lexar and RED 8GB cards. I know there were plans to let you record 2k on non RED/Lexar cards at some point, but I think that is a build 17 feature.

I do believe so...

I do believe so...

My guess is that; those Lexar 16Gb 300x will be fast enough...probably not as fast as the RED 16Gb...but fast enough for us and others to use.

I just think you will need the upgradable module to use them...so far, you have to buy the RED 16Gb and get the new module. The old ones won't work...they're too slow for RED 16Gb.

That's my two gb's worth.

So you mean that RED will sell a new upgradable CF module to be able to work with 16GB cards? Did I get that correctly?
