We are having a problem on set right now with connecting our Red camera to a HDTV via HDMI.

If we connect the HDMI cable to the camera while the camera is powered on, all the functions instantly freeze and become completely inactive, although the video image still moves with the camera.

And if we power the camera up with the HDMI cable connected, then it just does not boot up. But there is no problem to boot up the camera and record without the HDMI cable in.

The monitor is actually a 42" Toshiba Regza HDTV. We have a brand new 50ft. HDMI cable.

If anyone has a solution or has had a similar problem, please let us know ASAP as we are on set and stuck!

Thank You.

Hi Brendan,

Several people have mentioned problems with HDMI with different monitors. 50ft sounds very long, though of course it technically should work. Have you tried the same test with a shorter cable?

This is the only cable we. That was a thought we had as well but it shouldn't cause the problems we are having.

I had the same problem; when I connected an HDMI projector to the camera, it froze. With the HDMI cable plugged into the projector, the camera wouldn't boot. It was at most a twelve foot cable.

But later, using an HDMI to DVI adapter, and running the DVI through an AJA HDP DVI to HD-SDI box, I seem to have no problem.

Using build 16 V3.2.5

Same exact problem here. Using build 16 V3.2.5. HDMI of several different lengths and even two different monitors. Crashes it every time - even on reboot. Remove cable - everything goes back to normal.

Same problem here. Just bought a Panasonic 32" 1080P TC-32LZ800 (for 1080p playback from camera) yesterday and as soon as I plug in HDMI the camera freezes and I've tried 3 different HDMI cables.
Re-booting sometimes takes 5-10 attempts now (seems to be worse but may be my imagination?) whether unplugging all outputs or not.

We've been using the Aja HD-SDI to HDMI converter, its easier to run 100-200 ft of BNC than to run any length of HDMI, plus how confident do you feel about that HDMI connection to the camera? It can fall out at any time... its cheesy...

Put the HD-SDI to HDMI converter next to the HDTV and use a 3 ft HDMI cable. IT works!!

Just to add balance to the conversation, HDMI has been no problem for me. I have a 30 foot HDMI cable plugged into an LG LBD2DE 1080LCD and works perfectly in both 720 and 1080.

I can insert and remove the cable while the camera and monitor are on, never freezes or even skips a beat.

Also works using a HDMI-DVI adapter into a Dell 2407.

So I'm suggesting there isn't an inherent problem with HDMI but quite obviously a common one with compatibility.

same thing here. need a solution :(

I just got the HP w2408h 24 LCD monitor. It seems to cover the 720p stuff good. The monitor has () Fill to Screen () Fill to Aspect () One to One. So I can view full output with any stretching.

But when I try to 1080p play black the monitor gives me the following error.

"Input signal out of range. Change settings to 1920 x 1200 - 60 HZ"

Plus my Panasonic 1080p plasma can't handle Red's 1080 play back either.

Anyone have any ideas on a monitor that can handle both 720p with (one to one and Fill to aspect) and cover 1080p output.

Best advice is bring your RED in with you when testing monitors and try them all.

We've tried plugging our REDs into a couple different HDMI displays. A big LG plasma and a Panasonic PT AE-1000U projector, and the RED froze and won't boot in either case as long as the HDMI device is there. Cable lengths range from 3' to 12' but don't seem to matter. Could this be an HDMI handshake problem? It would be nice to have it working. The Aja box, while certainly a nice solution, is an extra $400+ that could go toward other accessories.

Are you on the latest build? I can hot-swap HDMI at any point with my LG 42" LCD and jump between 720/1080 as well as convert HDMI to DVI on a DELL 24". I don't know a great deal about HDMI but I do know they are rated for different versions etc. You might try a larger variety of cables, definitely in a shop rather than buying them one by one.

I agree about not wanting to buy another box if you don't have to. That gets incredibly frustrating when you just want a standard feature to work.

I'm happy to share any information about my setup or config if you think it would help.

Best of luck,

Jim

I don't know about Tim, but I'm using the latest firmware and having HDMI trouble. I really hope this is worked out :(

Hey Brandon, seems like you've been frustrated for a while about this.

I'm not sure it's a matter of it getting worked out, I think it's a matter of finding the right combination.

All I can ask is have you:

1. Taken the RED into a shop
2. Tried 5-10 different caliber/ver# HDMI cables
3. Tried each on 5-10 different LCD/Plasma models

I got lucky but all I can tell you is that it works.

I have indeed tried it on different models, and on some it works, some it doesn't. Just so happens that the one's i own it doesn't :(

I am fully aware there is a work around (get a different TV/ get additional hardware) but it would seem like a reasonable request to have it work with any HDTV with HDMI input.

don't get me wrong, it's a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme, and has never prevented me from shooting something that looked great.

I just guess my point is whenever someone buys a dvd player or PS3, they expect the HDMI to work with any TV with HDMI input. Why should the RED be any different?

Yeah, these are current Build 16 cameras that just arrived here from Red within the last couple weeks. The cables we tried were all from different manufacturers. Endlessly shopping HDMI cables also quickly adds up to the cost of the an Aja box. I too hope that this rises up in the stack of fixed problems, but I also understand that there have been lots of issues with HDMI since its inception. That said, the cables we've tried that don't work with the Red, work with ALL the other HDMI devices.
