  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Drop Frame count in helicopter????

I am trying to do an aerial test with the red. And I am trying to get the drop frame count in the helicopter. I have a red monitor, but i cant extend the cable long enough to work. And even if i could it still wouldnt go through a slip ring.

I have bought a black magic hdmi to sdi converter, but the converter appears to cut off the bottom of the frame. So i can see the top of the menu but not the bottom where the drop frame count is. Also there is a green bar on the left side of the screen.

Is there any other option??? Other than converting hdmi to dvi???

I did a helicopter shoot as well, on a Tyler mount on the right side. I ordered the 10 foot EVF cable for the occasion, and the operator was looking at the LCD screen.

When we recorded on the hard drive it dropped 80 or so percent, on the CF cards 0 dropped frames. I was later told that If I must go to hard drive ie, recording in the nose or so, not to put the drive in the cradle but bubble rap it a few times and tape it to it.

We have shot various aerials with CF.

Zero dropped frames.

Yes, it is inconvenient to only have 4 minutes per card at 4K, but less inconvenient than having unusable footage (80 percent...ouch!).
 
About a week ago, we shot for 3 days, hours per day in an AStar using only a cinesaddle and a harddrive. No dropouts until the last shot of the last day. We were in a slightly bigger chopper that last hour. Maybe deeper vibrations or something. Can't explain it but we had excellent results with the hard drive

We also recently did a helicopter shoot, we used both the side Tyler mount, and a Tyler Nose mount from Panavision. Using the side tyler mount, we shot to CF which was ok since the camera was right there and we could swap cards easily. With the Tyler Nose mount we used the Red RAM drive and a couple small Panasonic HD monitors. In both cases we didn't have any problems with drop frames, and the footage looked good. I would highly recommend using the RED RAM drives if shooting from a helicopter.

Colin, what RED RAM drives? Lim
 
RED RAM at $4500 is cheap, try buying a mag for the Phantom, Genesis, or Viper.

In a RIG mount, it's worth more than GOLD.

I have used it, wait until RED release it.

You will be amazed about it's additional capabilities.

Get your money ready, it's a must for any one shooting with Cars, Helicopters, and other RIGS.

64gb really is a nice size for a mag. Won't take to long to transfer, Won't ruin a large number of set ups if it goes tits up, 32min take length, etc, etc
 
The CF cards or RED Ram drive is the way to go....No more dropped frames!

I am about to get few R&D samples of the new Samsung SSD drives (first 128 GB, later on 256 GB). I am developing 3-rd party storage solution based on these SSD drives that will offer 128/256/512 GB recording capacities. All well under $ 4500,- USD... :) The 128 GB should start at around $1.5K - anyone interest please PM me...

There has been numerous posts about using third party drives, and flash cards, and possibilities of incompatibility or worse lost footage. Have yours been tested in the field yet? Experience has taught me that what engineers find in a lab is very different than real world trials. With that said, having choices is always a good thing.

Before I take this any further I have contacted RED for their "blessing". I certainly don't want to end up being labelled as having "bad attitude" and as such being refused their service...

On the other hand I can't just sit back knowing what I know. The solution (if approved) will work 100% with the RED One or any future RED camera...

Given the IBC fever it might take some time to hear back from RED...

I can certainly vouch for the stability of the RED RAM drive - excellent for helicopters, or any shooting where there is vibration. Certainly less hassle than changing CF cards.

How did you get the RED RAM drive? They are available?
 
wshultz I like your setup. It is practical, 3 days with only drop outs on the last day. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has used the new ET drive brackets with any success? I guess without monster budgets you have to find innovative ways to get things done. Then again who am I to say?
 
Then again who wants to pay to have to re-shoot. The Red Ram is a great solution.
