  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Richard was the first to post a Red wedding and he inspired me to try it out. A friend of the family was getting married in PEI, so I figured I would give Red handheld a really good test. It was really tough, but if you can pull focus on your own (I was just okay), comfortably shoot wide open (1.4), with a rig that has microphones, camera lights, etc attached, and can deal with 90 degree temperatures, then Red weddings are your thing.

Here are some stills. No video yet. Maybe when it's done.

We have a friend who has a place on PEI. I had no idea it would get that hot up there.

Yes, did this one by myself. It was tough though. Need to get me in the gym and do some training very soon. :-)

I did mention that I could pull some stills, just for the fun of it. Looked like the photographer was doing a good job though.
 
shot with Nikon 17-35, 80-200, and 50mm 1.4

Screw in filtration, no follow focus unit.
 
i can not believe .. what kind of filters you were using ?
why i can not have same quality ? or 50 % of it it ? what was the magic?
 
Thanks for the kind words Bassam, but I have to say there really is no magic going on. Here is what I did.

Build 16
Viewed in Redspace, checked Raw View some of the time.
Watched my histogram and stoplights carefully.
Kept my ASA rated at 320-500 the entire time, never strayed away from that range.
Used NDs (6 and 9) and a Pola at times.

These shots that you've seen have gone through a basic one light in Redcine with some curve adjustments. Rolling off the low end, some midtone adjustment, etc. Some of the shots I adjusted saturation. Occasionally I would increase the OLPF setting and detail level, but quite often I just keep it at 50% and keep the detail on medium. No NR used for these shots.

We'll see how the final video turns out. I was not thrilled with some of my camera work. I fought against the camera at times trying to get it balanced just right to get my horizon lines leveled. I don't have the best shoulder for the rig I was using that day. Hopefully the ET rig will take care of some of this. I noticed some of my pans seem stuttery. In a controlled situation I would have played with shutter to see if I could smooth these out, but at 1/48th I am seeing some stutter, even on some slower pans.

I also would have liked some more fill light on the subjects. I had to work with available light a lot of the time, and didn't really have someone there that could work a bounce card for me. So I lose some of the warmth in some of the shots. I also didn't have all of the proper attachments for accessories before I left for this shoot. That made it tough to get the onboard light properly hooked up. I have since received a Monstercine clamp which is a great addition to my kit.

Focus was challenging. For the type of video I'll be putting together (I prefer short and sweet for these types of videos) I will probably get away with the focus issues. In fact, I'll put some of it to use as an artistic effect. But for the version where it's a straight long winded recap of the day's events, I'll be cutting around some focus issues. Now granted, I could have made my life easier if I had a follow focus unit. But I was bare bones that day.

It was a good learning experience. You have to be really on your toes with wedding videos, and often you only have one shot at getting it right, so you are constantly challenging yourself to nail shots. I'm sure my handheld with Red will improve, but this was certainly a beta test for me.

I think the ability to pull high quality stills could put wedding photographers out of business!

They are always trying to catch a "special moment". If the RED is always rolling you can grab that perfect moment...roll back a couple frames so they aren't blinking...history preserved.

It's an interesting idea. It certainly eliminates the videographer and photographer getting in each other's way. :-)

There are some great wedding photographers though. I wouldn't put myself in their class. Having said that, it is fun to be able to pull stills like this and have enough resolution that your photos can be considered respectable. Pulling stills from other video cameras in the past has always been painful.

I don't have build 16 installed yet
Can i use the same your way in exposing which is called in other threads
something like ETTR (expose to the right) in build 15 ?

I would recommend going to Build 16. It is in release build now, and I like the noise structure better.

However, if you do stay in Build 15, then I would still recommend a lot of the same principles. The challenge with Build 15 is that you don't have RAW View which allows you to get an idea of what the actual headroom might be. So you might get fixated on some highlights that seem to be clipped in your REC709 view, but once you got into post you saw there was still some room to breathe. It's great being able to snap back and forth between Redspace and Rawview.

The traffic light will alert you to channel clipping. If all three lights are clipping continuously, the you'd want to check your exposure. There's no hard and fast rules regarding these clipping indicators. Sometimes it's a judgement call. If only one of the channels is clipping, might not be that big a deal later on, especially with Red Alert's ability to pull some of that back with DRX. I've been finding that using the histograms and traffic lights, I can get a very good idea of the exposure. But in a controlled setting, I believe a combination of light metering and the Red exposure assist tools will get you the best results.
