  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

stirring the 50-150 pot

Maybe it's old news/rumor, but my lens tech thinks it's Sigma done by Optex, or what/who was once Optex, in the UK.

Hi,

I have heard various stories from people who should know. The one with most credibility IMHO is somebody who worked at Optex a long time ago. Optex previous conversions & Cooke's work have little in common with these conversions.

I've said what it is before. I guess people didn't listen...
I don't know how much Jim/RED staff read this forum, but I would hate to piss them off by spilling cats and letting beans out of the bag. ;)

I don't know what I can say without getting in trouble.
Any input in regards to my knowledge from the RED guys would be nice.

I think perhaps you should maintain your silence and not satisfy the speculation of others. It is in your own interests and that of others in your community.Otherwise start investing in a CNC machine.
As some posters have mentioned previously, does it really matter which particular manufacturer provides the glass,as there is very little difference
in optic performance at this end of the lens market. If Roger Deakins or comparable DP decided to endorse the "Red" lenses then of course attitudes would change regarding their credibility.
Talking of R D he uses and owns a set "Cookes", i think this thread would
be surprised to discover where the optics for these lenses are manufactured.

You mean in England at the Cooke factory, using some of the same polishers that they've been using for more than 100 years? 'cause that's where they come from.

Like they say in Mad Max, I've got the knowin' of a lot of things. And what someone like Matt or I choose to share is based on proprietary knowledge. There are a lot of reasons to be open about certain things on an internet forum, and a lot of reasons not to.

.

I gather you have some support behind you to say this? It's certainly nice to hear. It was never really a bad thing about the Sigma scenario which some are adamant, but all in all, i don't really care as long as the lens delivers...which it does...especially in this price range.
The cameras are built in Singapore, who knows where else all the other components are made, if they live up to what they promise and deliver the goods..does it really matter? I like the 18-50mm and one day, who knows when this'll happen, but i'm sure i will like the 50-150mm.

Did anyone find out the thread pitch for the 50-150? I saw 72 and 77 for the 114mm size filter. I looked in the faq but did not see any info.

Thanks,
J.D.

weird- it looks like there are threads in the 114 housing- thanks for the info though.
