This from Joel Svendson of Rosco:

At this point – These are the US vendors who have placed stocking orders for the TruColor Camera Filter:

Abel Cinetech – both LA & NY
Custom Supply Inc. – Birmingham, AL
Redman Movies – Salt Lake City, UT
Barbizon – Offices in NY, DC, Boston, Florida, TX, AZ and Denver
Cinequipt – Minneapolis

Best,

Michael

Is anyone still doing a group purchase on these? In Evin's thread he mentions them going for 'as little as $130' whilst Abel wants $162 for it. Barbizon and Cinequipt dont even list them on the website.

Be very very wary of this filter.
Thin, fragile, badly finished... I got mine early, was warned by Rosco, but told it was indeed the new Trucolor.

Mine's broken before it was even used. (As they couldn't even get together to put it in a pouch. (although it needs more than a pouch- needs it's own hard case.

Not highly recommended. Get it only if you absolutely have to :(

I have both the Rosco and the Tiffen Hot mirrors - There is no comparison. The Tiffen is far superior.

Markp, that doesn't sound right. My Rosco TruColor IR is a 3.3mm piece of hardened glass. All the ones that I delivered through the group purchase I sponsored were personally checked by me and delivered in pouches.

Is it possible you accidentally ordered Rosco's standard IR hot mirror - the formulation intended for use in front of lighting instruments and the item I originally tested before Rosco decided to develop a camera filter? That filter is on a thin picture glass, easily scratched and has no edge finish.

Rosco did have some QC issues at first, not knowing how to handle the glass to prevent scratches during manufacture. They had only made glass for lighting instruments before. I got pretty anal about checking all the ones I was receiving and they stepped up their game.

I have had zero issues with mine. Evin's matrix test revealed a susceptibility to scratching. I believe his sample was the softer picture glass before Rosco had acquired the 3.3mm hardened glass. I will be performing a scratch test on an extra piece soon.

Just the other day I met the Rosco guy who invented the LitePad. After his sales pitch for his lighting (I'm sold on the 3"x12"!), I asked if he had the TruColor on him. He reached into his bag and produced a dirty little ziploc bag with a filter in it. I took out the filter, and after cleaning it off (it was very dirty), I was unable to find a single scratch. He told me that the coating isn't as delicate as it has been made out to be. He had been lugging it around to tradeshows in this fashion!

It was also just as thick and rugged as any Schneider I've handled (aside from the fact that the Schneider is sandwiched).

Between this experience and Evin's reviews, I've decided I'm going to pick one up at Cinequipt. It's a no-brainer.

Quote from an email to me from Jim at Rosco:

Hi Mark,
We do not yet have the machinery to slope and burnish the edges of the TruColor glass filter for standard professional appearance. For this reason, the filter edges might seem sharp and unfinished when you receive it.
end quote

I swear it's about 2mm thick. Bog standard glass - not hardened. Wasn't warned about that. Yep - was cut with a simple tool. not even sloped with a bit of sandpaper.
Not strong enough to be put with confidence in a filter tray.
Supplied in a piece of bubble wrap - no pouch. I was told it was a prototype, but that it was definitely a trucolor. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
Got broken in the hard case. (!! -in a pouch - regular handling!!). I took it to a glaziers who chopped it down into a 4 x 5.65 (I bought a 5.65 square because I had a feeling this might happen...
He confirmed that he didn't think it was hardened glass...

Ripped off.
I did tell them I wanted one urgently... this was all they could supply. It was good of them to send something. But I wanted to post a warning as I had no idea if others like this were being shipped to other buyers.
Mine was absolutely not fit to be a camera filter and I was amazed at what they had sent.
...and I had paid for shipping to Shanghai, China.

Filmtools will also be stocking the Rosco TruColor IR filters. We've got an order in with Rosco, and we're expecting them in early October.

We currently are stocking the Rosco LitePads and accessories, we've got some on display if you would like to come check them out.

Abel currently has stock of both the Truecolor filters and the LitePads from Rosco. I really like the kit version of the LitePads -- a great versatile kit.
