  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Zeiss DLP projector: contrast ratio of 2 500 000 : 1

aMazing!!

yep TT man is allways at least third :clown2:

but leica is better, you know ...

Sounds like a marketing exaggeration to me.

Regardless of what the projector can do, black level will be limited by ambient light reflecting off the screen. So to get really good black levels, you'd need a system (e.g. projector + screen) which tackles that problem.

3000:1 10000:1 2500000:1 All BS. There is no set standard by which contrasts are rated and the proverbial "1" in these ratios can be any unit the manufacturers choose.

He will say that, for sure.

Definitely, for sure!!!

Greetings from Formentera!!!

Well if you throw in nude beaches I definitely agree with whatever you have to say!

In Formentera you get all types of beaches. Formentrea is well known former pirate and recently also a famous hippy destination.

The next island on my route is Ibiza where you get all types of summer-night clubbing madness.

Report to come here in about two weeks.

Correctly measured On-Off contrast is a very useful number for any projector. It's not the whole contrast story but one of the building blocks.

Sorry Sanjin, the nudes are nice but not appropriate here. Please restrain from posting photos like those in your posts. If you must, link to them and put up a warning that they have nudity. Thanks.
where are they sanjin?.. me wants them.. american censorsh.. :poster_oops: pudor.. :whistling: bah :cold:

Of course, but that's just one factor. They can always advertise the darkest and the brightest (off and on) values of a display system in terms of common measurements - nits, cd/m^2, etc.., which may higher end systems do. Trying to relate such a range to an arbitrary ratio such as 10K : 1, is fairly meaningless. Especially when the on / off values are never published, which in the case of most HDTVs, prosumer displays and projectors, etc.. they're not.

1- One cheat is to vary the backlight for the contrast ratio figure. This is definitely cheating.

2- The sequential contrast ratio figure with no backlight cheating is somewhat indicative of actual contrast. Though you have situations where there is a CRT versus say the field emission prototypes; from what I saw the CRT has superior sequential contrast (might be an issue with the prototype or the way it was setup) but the field emission prototype has better blacks on 95%+ of images because it doesn't flare. So I don't think sequential contrast is necessarily a good way of measuring contrast.
*Some display technologies will have problems doing colors that are 1 code level above black. I've not seen this myself, but the seq. contrast ratio figure will miss this.

* sequential contrast is when you feed the display a full frame of black, and then a full frame of white. The ratio between the luminances determines the contrast ratio.

3- 2,500,000:1 smacks of absurdity. It's a silly number. Because the device is a projector, there's no way it will achieve anywhere near 2.5 million to 1 on the screen (because there will be ambient light hitting the screen).

The meaning of On-Off contrast is well defined. It does NOT mean actual intra image contrast, also called instantaneous contrast, and interpreting it as such is incorrect. The other contrast measure needed is ANSI contrast which is a measure for actual intra image contrast for one specific image pattern (chess board, which is fairly extreme case compared to average imagery). Together they give a good indication of actual instantaneous contrast you can expect from a projector.

3- 2,500,000:1 smacks of absurdity. It's a silly number. Because the device is a projector, there's no way it will achieve anywhere near 2.5 million to 1 on the screen (because there will be ambient light hitting the screen).
The number is for the projector used in an ideal room with no light hitting the screen but from the projector. It's also an On-Off contrast number, not an ANSI number. Actual intra image contrast in the planetarium is surely lower, but very likely still much much more than typical DLPs stuck at On-Off 2500:1 and ANSI 500:1.

Who knows how they arrived at their 2.5 million to 1 number. Do they even have a light meter that can measure a range so huge? Are they cheating the measurement by varying the iris or backlight?
What's a bit weird is that the specifications state "Contrast >1.000.000 : 1"... which is weird in that they are giving two different figures.

2- In any case, it's a meaningless number that has little use in practice. It won't do anywhere near 2.5 million to 1 if you have any light hitting the screen. And the viewing environment must be lit so that people can find their way in the dark, the exit sign must be lit, etc.

The number is huge and if it's 2500000:1 or 500000:1, you need an optimised room to take advantage of it. Can't wait for such technology to reach home cinemas as I have the room. White letters floating in pitch black space without support and blackouts that stay truly black were always a dream goal for me.

Sorry Evin.

No more nudity.

Better some flowers from my Formenteran's terrasse...
