Roberto just finished shooting Bond 22. He was gracious enough to allow me to post his comments from another forum.

"When I was doing tests for the last film, which I ended up shooting 3-perf Arri, I shot comparison tests between film and Red camera ( build as of October '07) digital. I was trying to emulate the film look with the Red as much as possible, so far as having several post facilities go through to a DI film out and project the results A/B. The reason was to prove to the producers that you could shoot part film, part Red, and seamlessly intercut the two. When done properly in the color timing stage, it was highly successful. The Red was able to be timed to match the 5219 without any problem except for scenes with extremely high overexposure and contrast.
I had the film timed first the way that I wanted it, and then asked the color timers to match it as best as possible from the Red data. The Red did superbly, and in fact when I shot night available light it did even better when I rated it at 2000 ASA. The noise was minimal and had great dynamic range.
I know that if I wanted to I could have "rigged" the results and made the Red footage look better ( different). It is such an open playing field that test results from various sources are really open to so much interpretation."

I'm drawing a blank here, but...

... what's today's date again? :whistling:

And what build are we on? :sarcasm:

He was testing before the film shoot. This could be months or weeks before the actually shoot of the film. October '07 is right before they started filming Bond 22.

Uhhmm...

... I was implying that it's an even more impressive statement considering it's nine months later and Red just came out with Build 16.

Not to mention Epic and Monstro being announced since then...

Have I mentioned lately how much I love my camera?

When we did our film out, we found we had the same flexibility that Roberto describes with one key difference: since we were shooting build 15 (Just weeks before 16 was released) we had a significant amount of room in the over-exposed areas. The tools available at the DI level provide more than enough resources to take the RED footage anywhere you want it to go. We found that to be true regardless of the circumstances under which we shot it.

That's great praise. Roberto Schaeffer DP'ed for Michael Mann's short-lived Robbery Homicide Division which is still one of the best looking shows to ever appear on TV. He also seems to know his way around digital cameras. I remember reading in Reuters in March that some of the vfx in Bond 22 were shot on digital.

Great post!

Another believer from "shooting" the Red Cam in a real world feature film....
Not bad for a scam!

Great quote.

But he ended up using the Dalsa. Jim, do you want to shed some light on this decision? I assume it was politically driven.

The one thing that might have swung it in favour of the Dalsa if it was me, is zero compression. I am one of the few who would have ordered the optical port on my Red if it were still being offered. Nothing wrong with Redcode however, but zero compression means all that RAW data is there for manipulation later.

I kind of feel bad for Dalsa actually, I think they had the whole 4K thing down first, I remember seeing the Origin at NAB in 2003 I think (may have been 2002, or could have been 2004) and it seemed to me in the years that have passed that not much has been shot with the Origin. Then Red comes along and kind of steals the wind out of thier sails (sales? he he), with a much more practical product (Redcode).

Still the option to shoot uncompressed RAW would be nice. I'd pay for it.

Jim, got any old optical port modules laying around that I could buy? would the firmware even still give the RAW output if a current build Red One had the old port installed?

This is great news.
The Epic will close the gap with film even more next year.
I think it will realy change the industry for good.
I love my RED for what it can do. I wish it had 2-3 stops more DR but it is a great cam already.
Cant wait for the next level.

Thanks
Tim

Roberto has stated that the Dalsa shots were done a couple of months before the RED tests.
