  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have a question regarding format size. I've just read the FAQ and just saw the Super35 format (4.5K - correct me if i'm wrong). Why nobody talks about this format? Can you shoot in 4.5k? If it's true, I think the 4.5k will give you more 35mm DOF like than 4k.
I really don't know, I have no idea, don't judge me, please, I don't have the camera yet and I'm a newbie :D

@ the moment you "only" can record 4k. Whether the s35 part of the sensor is covered by 4.5k or 4k, I don't know, but I've seen posts suggesting both.

Yes it's currently only 4k, 4096 x 2304 pixels.

Red originally included a new format called 2540p (or 4.5K as you refer to it) which would give 4520 x 2540 pixels.

If Red switch this on it would be an increase of 2MP going from 9434880 @ 4K to 11480800 @ 2540p - an increase of almost 18%.

Standard 35mm lenses should be able to fit the 16:9 sensor @ 2540p as well so it's not as thought the larger format creates a need to use different lenses... Anamorphic lenses would also slightly improve with the larger height of the sensor.

In the past, the only way we could supposedly record 2540p (4.5K) was with the uncompressed RAW port option, which is now is in limbo, maybe discontinued.

I would like to see an option for recording the full 4.5K sensor area, but like Paul said, it's a lot more data for the camera to handle. Currently the 4.5K area provides the monitor "look around" area when shooting in 4K.

I finally managed to load the page - just in case people are still having trouble, Scarlet has:

New 2/3" Mysterium X Sensor
1-120fps (180fps burst)
Up to 100mb/se Redcode Raw and RGB recording to dual CF
4.8" LCD
8x T2.8 Red Zoom Lens (this should disappoint a few folks but I think in view of the form factor it may have been the only possible way to make it work).
Full auto or manual shooting modes
HDMI and HD-SDI
FireWire 800 and USB2
Still Mode
Compatible with many RED One accessories (they have one tricked out on the site that looks like a mini-RED)
Wi-Fi Control

No price, which is a real disappointment - I wonder when that will be announced.

This seems like the perfect camera for what I'd like to do with it, and they might even be able to make it almost affordably, so I'm on pins and needles about the cost.

Pity about that delivery time, though :-(.

However Jeff, the difference in size between 4k and 2540p should be almost equivalent to going from RedCode28 to RedCode36 at 4K.

Seems a shame that Red are making a 5K camera in Epic given they could easily get upto 4.5K with the Red if they so wished. A 6K or better still 8K would've been a better move.

Somewhere in the $3-$4K range for Scarlet

I read somewhere that someone at red (Ted I believe was the "alleged" source) had "hinted?" there might be some sort of external alternative to the raw port in the future, I have no idea if this is true or not.

Why list it here as 'RED 4.5k' if its something that can't be recorded and is not planned on ever being recorded? My opinion, don't hype the 4.5k sensor size if it isn't usable to the end user.

I think it's worth noting on the site because of the "look around" feature. If it was only a 4k sensor, with look around, it would presumably be recording less than 4k. It's a 4.5k sensor that records the center 4k.

Maybe, and maybe not. Several people posting here have opined that the existing Red 4k format already has enough resolution for their present needs, and what they want is more dynamic range. Sensor design is always about tradeoffs. For a given sensor technology and overall chip size, resolution trades off against dynamic range. I believe many people would rather have more dynamic range rather than more resolution; or even give up some resolution in exchange for more range.

Doc, Brandon and Brook... sorry but none of you have a clue what we are working on... we have enabled things not promised, surprise at every turn, and you are "worried"? You think we will stop now? Come on...

Epic is not out yet. What is there to be worried about? There is a tremendous amount of knowledge gathering going on based on Red One, and through the combination of what Red team has learned and suggestions coming in from the industry, I would assume Epic will incorporate a lot of things that will improve the design as time goes on. Until we see detailed specs and get close to shipping time, probably only fair to think these guys are working overtime to design a great camera.

Then again, I can't pretend to know anything going on behind closed doors over at Red either, so.... :-)

RED ONE has a 4.9K sensor with 4.5K active pixel array and we can, at that time, record 4K out of it.
Am I right to think the 24.4mm x 13.7mm (Super35mm) size of the sensor is for the 4.5K?

Thanks,
antoine.

currently...

See Recon... Surprise?
