  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this camera a joke?

I think it is difficult to answer a generic question such as Red vs. film. Though, I personally think that Red camera is not ready yet for prime-time use, mostly because of cumbersome post-production work flow, I still think that there is value to a high-quality all digital acquisition that saves time in certain situations where a film camera is not very conducive.

Yes, Red is not ready for prime-time yet. There are adopters like me and some others but generally here in Germany common sense is that Red is an interesting alternative, capable of truly stunning pictures but the cumbersome workflow with its beta software is a too big osbstacles for a secure production. There are at least 3 TV shows I know that tested Red, shot a pilot, like the result and went back to HDCAM / S16.

When Build 16 is stable and Scratch, Speedgrade and others are capable of sustaining on-the-fly debayering with first light grading plus drop-frame-less RT dumping on SR then we are set for prime-time. ScatchCine and SpeedGrade XR are on the right track but its going to take another year until these tools are implemented in the existing workflow and widely known to producers.

hi hans,
which tv shows tested it?

SCRATCH is capable of sustaining on-the-fly debayering with first light grading plus drop-frame-less RT dumping on SR... right now.

There are a few major television shows in the US that are internationally known that are switching to the RED camera. They have not made their decision public yet, but when they do... you will know about it. Their workflow (which has been tested ad nauseum) involves SCRATCH-CINE delivering dailies in SR format and doing the conform once editorial is finished.

We have dozens of customers doing RED dailies work right now - today - with SCRATCH-CINE. This includes, among other things, the dailies for several large features shooting with RED.

SpeedgradeXR is a capable tool, but it does not support R3D natively and does not do realtime output to SR from R3D. SCRATCH and SCRATCH-CINE do.

RED and the RED workflow are very ready for prime-time. This is not just a statement from a manufacturer that supports RED workflow... it is proven fact with large amounts of actual workflows, actual customers, and delivered product.

Lucas

Also, production insurances sometimes do insist on having backup.

Hi,

I can only think of 2 productions I have worked on in the last 5 years where the production was insuring negative, or the outcome of the shoot.

See Stephen, the first mistake you are making is that you are trying to reason with them. They don't regard your 30 years of experience as anything because they have created a new filmmaking paradigm. They will spend $100k for cameras, backup cameras, drives, backup drives, production insurance, secondary production insurance (to cover their deductible), and if, after all of that, there is still a problem then they will take the damage out of their own pocket rather than return the camera to RED for repairs because that would be the ultimate blasphemy and betrayal of the RED family.

Hi Lucas,

I'm not saying that your technology is not working, on the contrary. It's the future and there are early adopters that use your stuff successfully (seen it by myself).

Nevertheless it's goint to take another year to make things rock stable and pulling it from the bleeding edge to the common mainstream. Producers only embrace new technologies when the mounth of word is telling them to do so. Happend to Avid and is going to happen to Red and the necessary workflow apps.

Also currently RT debayer and downscale to 1080p is only possible in half-debayer mode. Full debayer needs a further leap in hardware development. Personally I find 4K downscaled to 1080p half-debayerd works fine, unless you have to deal with underexposed/noisy footage or greenscreen shots that need the extra oversampling power.

Scratch is a fine product as are others.

Kind Regards,

Hans

Hi Daniel,

thanks!

Was fun to write about. And since this is the complaint department I must confess that I had the luck to enjoy this camera without any major hassel. When the workflow is set and intergrated Red will be a major player. Good times.
