  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DOF test with Angenieux 25-250mm

The 9.5-57 doesn't cover super 16. It was common to use a 2x extender on the cooke 9-50 to cover 35mm. Be advised that with the old Ang. lenses there were 2 flavors. The regular, and the later model HEC lenses (High exchange coatings). Thes looked the same, but were about a 1/3 of a stop faster, sharper, and flared less.

Hi Nick, thats correct.
Regarding coverage: I have 2 of the 9.5-57 here (the later model), and both cover the red sensor from 14.5-57 at f1.6. From 9.5-14 it shows a defocussed vignette.

The quality is very good - we were pretty surprised.
It has slight CA when openend to f1.6/T1.9 - but is an excellent lens for steady/handheld/highspeed and found lots of use especially for highspeed, videoclip, tv-commercial, stunt and dance here.

Hi,

I like the color rendition of skin tones with that particular lens. It seems slightly soft in a pleasant way, is that a feature of 2k?

Stephen

lagun.

Do you happen to remember the focale length and stop on that shot?

thanks,
Chuck,

not exactly - most was wildstyle w/o measurement - also i intentionally moved the lens pl-mount out of collimated range to get more non-vignetting focal lenght. The DoP and his assistant had a -heavy- workload (lots of steady) and went the "judge by eye" route. sadly @ asa 125, which wasted ~1.5 stops.

lens was mostly wide open (mainly f1.6-f2.4 iirc), focal lenght was mostly in the mids.

I have to say that i am pretty surprised by the quality of this lens, especially at f1.6. I always liked it a lot, but i never expected it to perform so good. Notice the ca/blur in the megaphone in front of the focus - that can be problematic, but besides that flaw it is becoming one of the "must-have" lenses we use for handheld/wildstyle/rocknroll, especially for outdoor available light 120p where the f1.6/T1-9/zoom combo is a blessing.

Hi,

The lens looks very different - thats my grade. The lens itself has a rather unsaturated characteristic. I am one of the "filmmaking was a photographic medium once, and now is a painterly medium"-folks since my first DIs in the mid 90ties. The actress also has green eyes, but i changed that to get a better seperation with secondary cc. (i adore green eyes, however in that image brown was visually better).

In that shot its mainly motion - she is dancing & singing.
The lens can be razorsharp, but it has a (which is bizarre, i dont understand why, probably the coating?) very narrow focal depth.

Ack, last day of a hard shoot. Yeah the 9.5-57 HEC is sharp as hell and very contrasty. they were great little lenses. I had about 3 of them that I bought goverment surplus NOS. They came with free Cinema Products GSMOs ;-)

but it has a (which is bizarre, i dont understand why, probably the coating?) very narrow focal depth.

It's the contrast. The more contrasty a lens is the sharper it looks, and the softer the out of focus parts look, hense (wow I can't spell when tired) the apparent shallower dof. Personally, I think the 9.5-57, was the best looking old style Ang. they made.

Beer, sleep. now.

When I ran the tech ops for the UCLA film school I bought five new CP 16 cameras ( 3 Gsmos and 2 CP-16R's) with a 6x9.5 for each one. I also bought sets of Cinema Products Ultra T 16mm primes. These are fast and sharp S16 lenses but are hard to find used. Never had complaints about any of them.

I also bought an Angenieux 16-44 T1.3 at the end of the year. Had to spend the money or loose it. Your tax dollars at work. LOL It was pretty impressive. Can't remember if it covers S16 as we were using it on standard 16mm format.

I cant publish them (they were done for a large production company for a $.$$$.$$$ shot still in production, in fact i cant share most tests we done here as most of them went into production and still are), i can only share few samples of the tests.

i published some enlarged shots of the MPs. (Thats MP18 @ T4, upper left, scaled up 400%. The CA was much less on the longer lenses).

The MPs, even if they have some slight flaws, are very good - excellent sharpness is their strenght, slight CA in the outer parts their weakness.

Regarding the images, please consider that these tests were done sept/october 2007 on a XX serial red, with the old mount and a very early firmware.

Is there a major possibility that the new RED PRIMES will outperform "brand" names due to the fact that they're being design specifically to put light to a sensor as opposed to film like other Cinema Primes?

There is in fact a major possibilty that the red primes will be better. As the mechanical cameras era ended and sensor-based cameras took over in photography, several new, superior lens systems became available to the buyers.

The cinema-lens-market so far was dominated by very few companies, for very very small numbers, with very very slow development cycles and very weak competition. There are lots of things to improve, in price as in performance. The so far published shots of the red primes look, also compared to arri & zeiss master/ultra primes, excellent. outstanding to be precise.

If the serial prime lenses can deliver that level of performance *and* are mechanically better than the 15 & 50 zoom, then its not difficult to predict that red can probably become market leader in another part of the 35mm market.

Very exciting to hear. It'll be really cool to see what kind of image the RED primes offer in comparison to beauties like S4's n' Master's.

Thanks for taking the time to post, Laguun.

Regarding the primes - Time will tell, however lets keep in mind that reds lenses are T2.x, while mp, zeiss, elite etc are T1.x, so for ultra-low-light and max opened iris, red wont competete in the beginning. Cooke and Angenieux however are mainly in the T2.x & T3.x area as well, and i like that combination quite a bit.
