Playing with both cameras yesterday we arrived to an interesting conclusion.
Besides resolution and compression artifacts (obviously RED outperforms the sony), the dynamic range seems pretty similar, as well as the "texture" of the image.

For this quick comparison, both cameras were set to their best settings.

VIDEO 1
High contrast scene. Exposure set to his face in the shadow. Graded in RedLog. Overexposed areas have been brought down as much as possible to recover any detail in highligts, even when this brings posterization on the face.
RED at ISO 500 (to have more room in highlights). Build 16. Master Prime 40mm.

VIDEO 2
Same thing.

Can you guess which is which? I think you can, but they are damn so similar for me.

Edited: i do not own the ex1 but i have several Reds.

thanks for posting the test, but it is a little tough to evaluate with such small
material.

maybe because I am seeing it on a 30" display, is why I looks small for me.

the second clip is red on the right. it has way more dynamic range on the face... less posterization.. the building on the left isnt one colored for the first 6 seconds of the video.. the right side on the guys face on the 5th second does not look like a single salmon colored patch. it looks sharper too. oh yeah.. and there's the ex-1 on the ground.

ahh... beat me to it..

Look on the ground in 20 sec. :-)

With respect to both cameras- this is comparing a Ferrari to a Honda Accord when both are cruising at 30mph. Sure they both *look* similar on your monitor but you'll see a massive difference say projected 60 feet tall in a movie theater. I love both of these cameras but the EX1 is way below the RED's league, well if the RED has good prime optics and is shot and exposed properly that is...

I recently shot a documentary based on Vince Bugliosi's new book. We shot Vince with the Red Camera and used the Sony EX1 for the "field work." Images aside, the Sony kept trying to "help me out". The camera was easily confused. If the accessories for Red had been available when we shot back in February I would of left the Sony at the rental place and shot everything with Red. The Sony EX1 is still built for the consumer. It has an ENG persona. I thought the camera was a toy. Just my take after shooting with it for a month.

I thought the same.

Are we all thinking the same like a sort of informant thanks to many genre films with spies, detectives, thieves, criminals, killers, etc... :) .

RED is on right side anyway.

though i gotta say.. at sd resolution .. the first clip.. they almost look the same.

This test only proves that The RED, as all video-cameras, has barely extra space in the highlights. The power is in the darks. In a setup like this I would never set the exposure on the face, but on the background - no clipping.
In post (color correction) you must be able to get much more latitude with Red than with an EX1 - when you lift the face out of the shadows.

did u compare a red with master primes and a ex1 with the factory lens?

Hi,

The EX1 has a fixed lens so I think that is what we are looking at.
