  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to make money from internet distribution of movies?

ricopedra,

I was just kidding :).

And I was also making fun of myself, given my initial proposition about the download counts.

ricopedia, I'll vouch for him. I've read his posts (well, not all 1300 +) and he is never serious. You have to hold his sentences up to a mirror to make them sound serious... seriously!:turned:

That's not true. :ranting2:

I'm like Shrek... I have layers...

And one of them is always serious.

Well... almost always. :whistling:

P.S. My contract says that I have to make at least 1000 posts per year on RedUser... It's the rules...

how is the internet distribution thing going, in what phase are u?

No matter if we win or fall, those bottles - we will drink them all.

(an approximate translation of a Bulgarian saying)

Slivovica is something you can always rely on. :) :) :)

I wish I could get a bottle over here. Last time I had some was in Japan almost two years ago... Maybe I can contract You to be my private supplier... Do You by any chance get the Czech-made kind over there?

I had this one just once, but it is about $ 2000,- USD / bottle:

And I also love the fruit variety:

Especially the hazelnut one:

see how it works with music

see how it works with music

Interesting thread… reading all the posts, have to say: Many good point in there…

Now,going back to the original idea...

And -
Noone knows if it's gonna work, we'll see.

The most important thing is to have impressive material and to assure the advertisers that [initially] they've got nothing to pay.

I'm definitely giving it a try. :)

Research ;).

Let’s see how your ideas work already with music. Have a closer look at for example: www.jamendo.com

They already do exactly what you planed to do for film. Now, think about – some how it works… and I’m sure this will be a model for distributeindi films in the future- BUT they surly will not make money this way. :-(

(Another long post, sorry)

Peter,

Yep, but we gotta better organize our RED squad here. I hope that sometime next year we will be cracking.

Burger,

Especially with music, the situation in my country is that maybe 90 % of music usage is illegal [similar with movies].

I don't see that changing in the future, moreover, I see the "disease" slowly devouring traditional home distribution in the West too.

So, free downloads are here to stay.

And this is actually bad for distributors but good for users.

Who cares about the big-$ sharks that control distribution?!

And they'll probably transform themselves into Internet promoters.

The question is how to have free legal downloads and income for the artists.

I think that this trick with the banners could work fine for music and, in the future, for movies too [when fast-Internet becomes ubiquitous].

It's easy and fast to download a song now, not so easy and fast for movies.

Big bands and artists are already releasing their music for free - Radiohead, Coldplay, Prince. That speaks a lot - they know what's coming.

I have musician friends and I think they have great material. I'm planning to shoot a music video for them and maybe even participate in some of the songs. :w00t:

We'll try to find an advertiser who would participate in this plan with the banners.

And then release an album for free legal downloads, under the Creative Commons type of authorship.

The main psychological key for this is to assure the advertisers that initially they don't have to pay anything.

People are tough when you ask money from them - no matter if they're advertisers or users.

Regarding users, if your song is legally free to download - more people will be willing to give it a try. If you put some price for it [even a smaller one], many people will instinctively think: "Oh, another one... they're trying to cheat me".

Regarding advertisers, if you tell the advertiser: "You'll have to give me money only if the song becomes popular", their soul will be at ease :) - no risky investment. And psychologically, they'll be more willing to sign a contract.

If you tell them: "Give me money now and maybe I'll become popular", the chance for a positive reply is reduced greatly. The advertiser will think: "Oh, another beggar".

And so on...

Gotta think like people around you think.

I'll keep you updated with our battle in the "Wild East" ;).

Have you looked close to jamendo.com ?

They have great music, all for free and all totaly legal and no advertiser jumps in… at least not jet….

I’m all with you– there will be big changes in distribution. BUT the model how you make at least a bit money to survive is not there jet – look at jamendo.com and ask your musician friends. The money has to come from somewhere else.

Let's get everything for free.

Let's get everything for free.

May I download your movie, music, art, book, poetry for free?
But,
Your computer cost something –
Your internet connection cost somebody something –
You pay or someone pays for food that you eat to keep you alive so you have the strength to download for free –
The cameras and microphones and pens that were used cost someone something –
The clean air you breathe cost someone one somewhere to clean –
You only have a finite amount of time here on earth. You have to give up some of that time to download for free.
But, I can imagine the day when everything is free
Free food
Free clothes
Free housing
Free school
Free love
Free sex
Free health care
Free gas
Free transportation
Free trips to Mars and beyond
Free bullets
Free war
Free toys
Free everything
Oops I just spent some of my valuable time writing this. There goes that spent word again. Boy what am I going to do? I know I’ll go to www.jamendo.com and download some music for free. Isn’t the internet wonderful?

Hmm… all very ture…

That’s way the question of this thread is:
How to make money from internet distribution of movies?

karapethov. Whether we agree with your idea or not you have predicted the future. I recently attended a conference at Stanford University by a group called Creative Commons. They cited references of Nine Inch Nails and their downloadable music. The group made ten times more money selling music than those in locked up sites like iTunes. All of it originated from the first free download. When I first heard of this concept my first reaction was one of objection as an artist. In reality, it is the opposite when it comes to making profit. Your concept is the future. And it is a new concept that will eventually be the norm. I guess there are new rules with the internet.

Now this is really worth looking at, isn’t it?

Check out http://creativecommons.org/ ( here for you in german http://de.creativecommons.org/was-ist-cc/ ) There are all different kinds of licenses. Look it up – this will certainly also be a model for film in the future – but again where will the money come from?

I would say - You should definitely get in contact with the musician if you wand to use music in a film,– by creative commons you don’t have to – but it would be just fair – a donation too--- GEMA goodbye

This concept is not by karapethov – in fact it’s be around for a while… creative commons http://creativecommons.org/ is spread all over the world and will grow, for sure. It introduces a new and innovating way for artist to publish their work… This could have a tremendous political effect also, think about it…

BUT will the artist this way ever make a living out of it?

what ckalan1 says is very true, too –

Do you get your computer for free? Why than should be software for free?

You have to pay for a camera? Why give a film away for free?
