16GB for B16...

All cards are good with B16. I don't get the confusion. I saw that post by Jim as well and it didn't make it sound like only 16gig cards would work with B16.

I got you now- red is making the only 16GB cards in the CF industry that are fast enough for the red. Surely though you can see where the confusion came from? I think the title threw me.

Thanks for the clarification though- this is much better news than I thought!

Get me four!

When will we get an uncompressed 2K to recorded on either 1x16GB CF ( RED custom build ) or will we have the two slots RED Flash ( CF ) module soon ?

Stew.

Hello. When did that new version of the Quicktime Codec appear on the support site?

Ben

I'm very happy that these are finally out, but the price is not cool. Why would you compare it to P2? CF is an open source that's supposed to follow Moore's Law and industry pricing, not be compared to Panasonic's fucked up business plan.

I was hoping to see 16gb at $199, a straight replacement for the 8gb, this is what the computer industry will typically do. Or worst, worst, worst case, double that at $398. But $550? Sheesh, I hope that doesn't last more than a month or two.

Maybe I misunderstood- I thought Jim said that only the 16GB cards would work with build 16?

You misunderstood :)

8 GB cards work fine with build 16 (otherwise there would've been no point in releasing build 16).

It's not a commodity item and it uses specialized components to get the speed+capacity. Remember, industry pricing for new components are usually much much higher because the availability is low and demand is high. I wish our cost was $199 but that's way way off the mark.

P2 cards are just SD cards in raid in a little box...

If you can custom develop a Compact Flash card that is faster with the same capacity, for cheaper , we will be more than happy to be your biggest customer.

One other thing.. Don't compare us to Moores law or Industry pricing, because both of those "standards" are based on consumer products manufactured in quantities in the millions.

We couldn't wait for Mr. Moore to catch up with us in speed and quantity (trust me, we waited) so we had to do it ourselves.

Just to point out to those who are thinking of trying to wait it out hoping Red will drop the price like the industry does... their 8GB is still $199 although you can get an 8GB lexar for about $80-90. I was told the difference is that Red's version will tell you the remaining time left on the card and a non-red card won't. I'm willing to deal with that for the savings. But that's me.

Although I would love and need a lower price, I personally feel that Red's track history is that they don't price gouge their customers. Their prices are consistently fair or even more then fair. But they still need to be in business as well.

On the other hand, the 16GB is a different situation. I'm happy Red took it into their own hands and developed their own card. It was taking forever for the industry to try to make one that qualified. So if that's the price, then I'm buying as soon as it comes out.

Whoa, WTF? Why wouldn't an industry card, once formatted, tell you the remaining amount?? Red's cards are supposed to be simply rebranded Lexar 300s. Heck, the Soderbergh cards were blatantly Lexars (so I heard).

I think Red formats their red cards differently. This is just what I was told. Anyone out there that has both?

That's incorrect information. I have 4 Lexar cards and they tell me the % left with no problems...now third party batteries are another story!

The cost issue here is that RED is having to have these specially made. The cost sucks for both of us (RED and us the users). However, they do give us longer recording times and are STILL cheaper the the friggin P2 cards! Panasonic must be making a pretty penny even after R&D costs considering they are just using almost standard SD cards inside the card (and I may be wrong about that.)

Here's a $ per GB breakdown:

Red Raid ($900) 320 $2.81
8GB Card ($199) 8 $24.88
16GB Card ($550) 16 $34.38
Red Flash ($4500) 64 $70.31

If you reason that double the size should be double the cost... then it looks like Red is charging only about 38% more for their custom 16GB solution with the added benefits like getting it sooner, quicker offload speeds, better performance, etc.

Please correct me if the number crunching is wrong. But I thought it might put it in perspective.
