  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redcine crashes all the time

Hi guys,

Couple of pointers here for smoother operation in Redcine:

1. It's a good idea to repair your permissions every now and then.
2. Make sure you are not running other apps while using RC to transcode
3. Set your delivery resolution in the PROJECT window first, then frame your shot in the SHOT room, then make sure the resolution in the OUTPUT room matches what you set in the PROJECT room.
4. Avoid bottlenecks, don't read and write to to the same drive if you can avoid it, use separate firewire/esata ports for read/write if possible.
5. When things get wonky, reset RC and start a NEW project
6. Keep like resolutions in the timeline; 4K in one project, 3K in another, 2K in another.
7. Transcode overcranked shots solo, keep varispeed slow motion shots by themselves in a project or use Red Alert to transcode these when transcoding to QT formats, the slowmo stuff seems to generate the issue more than anything else.
8. The Freeze Frame issue seems to be unique to the QT format, it won't happen with other formats, regardless of OS
9. I have noticed at times that setting the viewport resolution to medium or high can sometimes help get a render thru, keep in mind that your render times will suffer if you crank the viewport res too high, the CPU will have to draw hi res frames for the viewport while transcoding which will bog down the process.

We are working hard to improve the stability and functionality of our apps. For the time being I'm having good success by following these rules when using Redcine.

Best regards,

Kevin

a colleague of mine and me have exactly the same configuration on our MBP and still he is having problems loading up the REDCINE program. I have no problems whatsoever launching the program.
His MBP is set on Chinese language, though. We tried setting it to English languague but also that didnt solve the problem.

Does anyone have the best solution to solve this problem? Just give us a simple list of what to do and what it does, maybe?

Thanks a lot :D

My biggest worry is post, not acquisition. Too bad, so sad. Right. I'm a bit of a fuck-up catagorically, and was just humming in another forum about the best Mac set-up to buy as I need to upgrade my computer ASAP. Nothing here sounds conclusive for the current software coming out of California. Wait a minute, that could mean anything! ;>) Rock on and deliver me the goods in two months time. Fix this shit. Find a common base that works.

Hey Mr. Mark...

Perhaps you could try this on the system that Noah just got? : )

Best,

Lucas

This is unrelated to the above, but then again, related to RED Cine crashing on launch under Mac OS X. I had that happen a while back and the solution was to restore the native system fonts. I use a font management app and the only fonts I usually leave untouched (read: unmanaged) are Geneva, Keyboard, Last Resort, Monaco and Lucida Grande. Seems to me that Red Cine expects certain fonts to be active. If it doesn't find them on launch, it quits. Which fonts specifically? I don't know. That's one question for Stuart.

I found a fun workaround...

When I logged in with another user, RC managed to create the /library directory, and worked well again from my main account... :)
