On Friday last week I worked on a presentation over at Warner Bros. that was for execs from the production and post end of things here on the lot. The reel from NAB was shown on D5 and on film. The film reel looked really good and super sharp. Ted from Red was the one heading up the show and from what I could hear it sounded like people really liked what they saw but did have a lot of questions about the workflow and about color spaces.

why would the Big Guys want to use red? i'm afraid when they do, the rental prices would go up and the availability to purchase red would be near impossible for indies. Studio guys are better off with panavision, cinealta or the (upcoming) Epic.

Its all about quality and getting that quality for as cheap as humanly possible. So that's why the studios are very interested in Red. I just heard that a two camera feature over at Paramount just wrapped.

Also I wouldn't worry about the rental market drying up anytime soon. As far as I know there seems to be plenty of Reds out in the market right now with a couple more thousand on the way. Plus Red made this camera for everyone to use, not just the studios.

Good. I do hope rental prices go up. And the demand gets higher.

I have to imagine you'll see RED creep into episodic tv fairly quickly as the F900's did a number of years ago.

I imagine the execs were also looking at it for formatting decisions. They control what format choices the DP's have, and what stocks they can shoot on- with respect to warner backed movies.

I heard Warner Bros. did a test about 3 or 4 weeks ago with Richard Crudo (former president of the ASC) shooting. I heard they tested kodak's 5219 stock, the viper, and the newer dalsa. The cut of the footage is still being put together, and after they play with it, the results will probably be shown within WB in the next month or so. I'm hoping my source can get me in to take a peek.

Red is a very cute toy.

Without an optical viewfinder Red will never become a standard of the industry
