Any tip on good tech houses or singular technicians? Not expensive, please.

If you are in LA and this is for cine lenses I'd recommend Duclos. I don't know if you would consider them cheap, but they are very good and the price will be fair and they will help you understand what it is that they had to do.

Not in LA. Thanks.

Abel can do lens servicing in both NY and LA.

So can ten other companies, I thought you weren't supposed to be a shill.

No Offense Mitch, I have spent over $200k at Abel, but it rubs me the wrong way that you are constantly shilling for them on this forum.

Give it a rest.

Hard to make suggestions if no one knows what location to suggest.
I share the same planet with you. So any one can be useful. I would prefer Europe. Any EU country. But where over here? If not, why not US or anywhere else?

Stuart Rabin at Focus Optics

ZGC in new Jersey

Clairmont Camera

Cinema Technic in Florida

Du-All Camera

Visual products

Etc, etc,

Why can't he? Everyone else is selling something......

Well, thats fair, but on most forums they tend to discourage that type of thing. It would have been different if he had said, "well we do it and so does Duclos, and Focus etc."

I don't want to get into a big discussion on forum policies, so I reckon I said my piece and I'm done.

However, Abel Cine is an official RedUser sponsor as well as stand up folk. I would assume/expect him to "shill" as he will.

Wow - I have no response to that. No wait, here's a response, good luck in finding a place.

I think Mitch has more than earned a bit of shill points, he's a valuable member with a lot of knowledge to spread.
I will second Matt's recommendation of Paul Duclos as well as Stuart at Focus Optics who just sold me a beauty of a 40mm T2.1 Zeiss lens and is working on my 9.8mm Kinoptic as we speak.

What kind of cleaning are we talking about? Just dust/condensation residue, or mold/fungus?

I'm not so sure there are even 10 companies in the US (excluding rental houses that usually don't service outside gear) that can do factory approved cine lens service. This is highly specialized stuff, and not many people get into it.

BTW, thanks for the mention arrinick!

This is an interesting thread. I certainly enjoy watching a good argument. I like to picture it in my head as a 'on the porch of the bar fight'. Someone will leave with a bloody nose and a bruised ego and everybody else will get to enjoy the show. I'm rooting for Mitch if anyone wants to bet five. :)

Ahem... Back to the topic at hand, lens service IS a very specialized service if you get past your regular pit stop, and requires a great deal of skill and equipment (read investment). How many rental facilities have a white room?

If some of you were kind enough to keep on adding to the list, regardless of price and location I could definitely use it. Never hurts to have the number of a good doctor in your address book.

Sorry if I said something that crossed a line for anyone. How's this?

Abel offers lens servicing for outside clients in both NY and LA. We have done lots of cleaning and overhaul work for RED clients in the past, including unique and antique optical components. We have also custom machined custom lens supports and other parts for older lenses where parts were no longer available or appropriate to fit the RED One camera.

And yes, there are a couple other places that could do similar work, such as Duclos or Focus Optics.

Honestly, I figure that when I see someone asking a straightforward question like "who can service my lens" or "who sells this product" that it is generally fair for me to respond "we do." I try to keep it short and sweet so it doesn't read like a trade ad, but if people are asking then it why can't I answer?

Hey Guys,

I personally don't see where Mitch or anyone else with a legitimate service to offer the RED community is out of line by mentioning it. Where we should draw the line as at bashing competitors. After all, remember what the original question was.

Re: the "White Room", or clean room, the only one I have ever seen in this context is the positive pressure glass cleaning room at Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. But they don't assemble the lenses there, they just clean the elements. The assembly room is next door.

I have a Laminar Flow Enclosure, which is a booth that has an area about 9 cubic feet that can be put under slight positive pressure by a "wall" of highly filtered air. This gives you a "mini clean room" effect. Once it is under pressure, dust cannot enter the enclosure.

This is where I change out elements on the lenses. It keeps the work virtually dust free while you assemble a rear element group, for example. I also have UV bulbs in there to irradiate the lenses (when I'm not working of course) and kill any mold spores.
