As we are strongly considering ordering red prime sets, i would like to ask some basic questions to make sure we understood the process right:

- prime sets will be delivered in the sequence of the camera serial nrs?

- the prime set will be offered to order Q3/2008?

- will the prime set be usable on other 35mm cameras as well (or, a la angenieux rouge, end closer to the sensor)?

- will there be a "hands-on" in europe when they become ready to order? the "feel" is pretty important and it would be excellent to be able to try it out (and would provide an excellent alibi for a red employee to have a boring business trip through paris, berlin, london, rome, madrid, vienna... :))

To my understanding the RED lenses are all Standard PL mount so you can use them in any 35mm camera with PL mount or with any PL adaptor on any other camera.

As far as the fill goes, well, if you ever put your hands on a Arri MASTER PRIME, that is the way they fill, just a bit smaller, but not of much, this lenses are BIG, very well build and very smooth, since has been stated more then once and especially by Jim that all the Primes, including the new 300mm, will observe the same quality build of the 18-85 ZOOM, then I can guarantee you that they will be loved by all users.

As far as delivery dates and order of delivery not sure.

I'm in a situation were I really want to love the Birger mount, when it becomes available, but I kind of must purchase a set of lenses, and really don't want to fork out the kind of money that takes to get a ULTRA PRIME set, or some MASTER PRIMES, if in short I can get the RED SET at one Fourth to one Fifth the price.

Look forward to some answers, but they might not come as yet.

ciao

The prototype primes and zooms shown at NAB all had clearance on the rear elements to mount to any 35mm film camera without blocking the spinning mirror.

I was wondering the other day, Red said something about the primes being optimized for digital cinema.

I wonder if that might make them not so recommended for celluloid cinema?

Digi primes are designed to manipulate light as it hits the sensor, as the sensor is an oval shape and not a flat plane (like Film).

What are you smoking?

I did not mean primes, I meant lenses that are designed for digital photography, like the digi primes. The digital sensor is not the same as film and light reacts differently when exposed.

I'm curious to know how the lenses will be dealt out. I suppose camera number order would be fair. But then again, there are those of us who've had a reservation for the prime set since the day they were announced... How is that going to factor into the mix?

camera number order would be fair??

I'm not so sure...i've been very impressed by how many people i've seen jump the que--they didn't put money in early, they didn't hold their peace while they were waiting (some were even naysayers)...but when the camera delivered, boom--some guys managed to get cameras, evfs, etc. while others who put down their money a year ago still wait to receive that happy email.

i'm not complaining--i was lucky enough to have a number as low as I did and I'm doing great with the camera and looking forward to receiving my evf.

but i'm kind of thinking there is no 'fair' way to do this thing. RED has succeeded BIG time and its hard to control the craziness. The math for lenses, projectors, prosumer cameras, etc. is just going to keep being crazy (possibly awful if you're in the 3000's) to watch for at least another couple years.

all that to say, I hope lenses are first made available to guys named Paul.

From what I was told at NAB, RED will stagger the lens onto the market and you will collect them as they come out...paying roughly 5k each. Correct me if I am wrong but after you buy the 1st 4, the 5th one is free...making it a 20k kit. After they are all on the market I suppose you could just buy the kit....Big Jon actually gave me the scoop on this and knowing RED is sounds about right.

I am with Paul on the fact that I don't think it should be serial related release (sorry mark ;) but it will be chaos no matter what....from the build quality I saw at NAB and these puppies are what any demanding professional would expect from high end glass...smooth as butter mechanics, look forward to some test footage. I for one plan to start collecting this kit.

SO...RED, when does the 1st prime actually roughly sort of hit the market?

I am sure they will go in order of lens reservation date.

So others could order when the lens will be in stock, thats the reason the prime are not in the store anymore, same for the 18-85.

Be good, shoot great !

Yes Haskell, this is exactly what I said in earlier thread, this was said, RED might not wait for the entire set of primes to be available, before start selling them, and for this they will sale the Focal lengths available at $5k each and if you only buy 3 of them then you will have paid $5k each, but if you get 4 of them, then as the fifth one will be free, then you will have paid $4k each.

The lenses are really fantastic, and believe me, as the first and only lenses I put my eyes on were the ARRI MP's, it has been very hard to like any other lens, but RED's are just that good, now I'll pay double if they could just make a set of Super Speeds at T*1.3.

The build quality, look and fill of the 18-85, truly is unique and absolutely stunning, wow, what a lens, and even so on the heavy side, at about 10lb, it is still very portable, and its size, also big, it is not esagerated were it can't be hand held, shoulder mounted, and off course great for Steady cam, as well.

As any Pro, will agree, this are great things to know about RED new lenses, but still several Q? remain, how many elements are they going to be build of? Will they be Color Matched? What type of Glass Element are they going with?

At the end I trust they will be great, but I can't wait to see some images, and better yet can't wait to see a test side to side with the ARRI MP, as I for sure will have to use them together in more then one occasion true the filming of my projects for which super speeds will be an absolute necessity, and I would much love to only buy the few focal length needed from Arri, at 4 to 6 times the Price tag.

One thing we are all better get adapted to is the painful wait with RED, as I GUARANTEE YOU, it will never be over, there always will be something NEW to wait for, what a fantastic new kid on the block RED DIGITAL CINEMA is, and what great years of Cinematography await, I'm so happy to be part of this great times.

And I know, this are just tools of the trade, but what a toll this things are!

ciao
