I understand it's important not to rush a good thing. But beyond speculation of 2009. Have there been any dates being pushed around by legitimate sources. I am a film student that has held out purchasing other cameras for this one specifically, Because i have faith in RED. But i was just wondering beyond speculation..... When are things rolling? As far as When can you start placing orders? And When will things ship? Anyhow nothing but love and Respect for a visionary company. It's a long ways but well worth the weight.

We can place orders at the time of the camera release.
Early 2009 should be early 2009 I guess and that means hopefully February/Mars 2009 (because Januari should mean "start of 2009" and later would mean "spring 2009")

Those are my guesses

I would be shocked if it were released before NAB.

They say early 2009 so either before or right after NAB. I am guessing if they are ready a week before NAB they might hold off until they get back from NAB just because of all the staff that go to NAB they probably would not want to leave them short handed at that time. Though this is pure speculation and the reality is I will be happy if I get it by summer 2009.

Speculation is ALL you're going to get. Don't hold your breath................. I would speculate (myself) that its actual release is at least a year from now. That's a looooooong time to wait for a cam. Best find something in the mean time.

The HVX is a very good cam and can be bought/sold with little loss if you're a smart buyer. I actually made a few $'s on the one I bought/sold.

Time and speculation about Scarlet may render some people insane. Especially since it was only about 15 days ago we found out that Scarlet may take a year to come out. And a year is a long time to be thinking about something.
A lot of people are buying a camera to use NOW and start saving to get Scarlet NEXT YEAR. If you purchase a camera now and put it to good use you will get back at least $3K by this time next year and have a heck of a lot more experience shooting.

I believe ted mentioned in one of the videos they were shooting for january. I think scarlet is going to give you all something you just could never have afforded. you get a 2/3 sensor , a great lens , it does timelapse , undercrank and over crank , great dynamic range, records to solid state, records audio, and it'll let you do fantastic colour work with all the extra resolution and raw workflow. as much as I think the RED ONE is a revolution scarlet is real the kicker. I don't think anybody will bother shooting on anything but scarlet and up when its released.

god its not so long ago we were all killing ourselves dealing with 4:2:0 and how that wasn't great for colour work and how we couldn't really under or overcrank until the hvx200 and that was almost 7k and even on the f900 I shot with it wasn't cheap and it wasn't even full raster it was 1440 x 1080 with 3:1:1 and cost 85k and then you had to get access to a deck and ingest workstation, scarlet its basically an f23 with a fixed lens for 3 freaking k. it boggles the mind.

tv stations going HD will probably buy hundreds if not thousands of these. the work flow will be rock solid for pc and mac by the time scarlet is released because its already being battled tested for the RED ONE and the work flow is going to pretty much be the same. we might get fan films that are indistinguishable from the real deal. its really a great time to be getting into this.

As mentioned previously I've been at least a year into the future to test Scarlet out for my fellow forum users. I can say with confidence it will be released on March 25th, 2009 at precisely 9:01 AM PST. :red_bandana:

Thing is, a year is a long time in camera design - who knows what'll be on the market by then!?
A wise person once said (maybe on this forum actually) that all the time you're waiting for what's on the horizon, you're not shooting right now! I think everyone really needs to forget about Scarlett just now and get on with it. Then when it becomes even vaguely in view maybe start thinking about it. I think even if they had working prototypes and betas it'd still be too early to really make plans, but at this time, it's crazy!

test footage?

when can we expect to see your test footage that demonstrates the differences between Epic, Red One, and Scarlet?

just wondering...

well said!

well said!

Well said Steve. I'm buying a new camera right now for a documentary that I'll be shooting over the next two years. When Scarlet arrives, I'll make the decision to buy it based on my needs at the time, but I definitely won't be switching cameras in the middle of a documentary. In the meantime... I've got to shoot with what I can get my hands on right now.

I vote for get a camera now and start shooting as soon as the battery is charged!

I had to sign a deal with Future Jim that I would leave the cameras and footage there. Otherwise there would be a paradox in that they'd have the camera's final design before they finish designing it.

Yeah, my Dad just looked over his shoulder and saw me on REDUSER. He said, "I've never seen someone so enthusiastic about a product as you are about that Red DVX thing you keep looking at." I though it was funny. It's obvious that I'm obsessed.

I think is very positive that you are so “obsessed” with things like this camera. It is a nice goal and purpose to have. Especially if you are young and looking towards the future. Video production is a tough business but you can make a living in so many different ways with it if you really go at it. Or simply have fun with it.
This new technology is a allowing so many people to dream and at the same time see results with their own projects or others. I am going to keep using my HVX 200 until Scarlet is out, then a whole new game will start.

paradoxically

Noah

but isn't that what some of us are doing in this forum?
aren't we trying to get the specs finalized before Red has announced what they will be?

I appreciate all of your input, But at the announcement and finalized for production with the release in the months proceeding. I honestly think the value of the HVX200 (as used or new even if they don't lower the price) will plummet because the scarlet will blow it out of the water by taking a huge slice of Panasonic's market. So does anyone have any other cameras suggestions or cameras they are selling currently?
