Hello all,

As you may know, I have been working with Rosco to bring an infra-red cutting filter for matte box use to market.

Rosco has a standard filter that they call Hot Mirror that has worked to solve the IR contamination issue we’ve been experiencing with our Red One Cameras. While it works, Hot Mirror is not a camera filter. I met with Rosco in their Round Rock, TX filter manufacturing facility and made some suggestions as to what needed to happen to make this filter a viable camera filter solution. The results have yielded their new Rosco TruColor IR Camera Filter.

4” x 5.65”, Item #120480104565, Rosco suggested list: $162.00
5.65” x 5.65”, Item #120480105656, Rosco suggested list: $212.00
6.6” x 6.6”, Item #120480106666, Rosco suggested list: $289.00
Custom size, Item #120480100000, Suggested list POA

The filter has been tailored to the spectral specifications of the IR sensitivity of the Red One. When inquiring about the Rosco solution, please refer it as TruColor IR. This way, you are ensured to receive the filter designed for your camera and not their standard Hot Mirror Camera Filter.

Delivery time should be around two weeks for orders made today.

Michael

Thanks!

I've been following this development.

What I'd also need (yup, asking for more cake here...) is a screw on solution. Why?

Many more chopper shoots coming up.

ND+IR screw on for 80mm lens fronts.

But that's just me....

On the second note: How do I order?

Wow!! Michael you totally rock. How do I buy one?

You really should check out the Panchro mirrored ND's. I think they are more optically clear than the hot mirror from Rosco. And you get IR and ND in one filter.

The Pancros are a great choice and are very reasonable:

Is it true you shouldn't stack these though, or do you have a Panchro for EVERY ND level you need?

Are 3 enough? I would have thought the need to fine tune would require a few more, or the need to stack.

you might want a .3 and .6, but those arent affected by IR, so a standard nd is fine

FYI- you dont "fine tune" ND filters, you drop in what you need
.9=3 stops
1.2=4 stops
1.5=5 stops

you "fine tune" with your stop

Thanks, Michael
Yesterday I was given an ETA of sometime in June in an email from someone at Rosco.
Is two weeks a very possible, less conservative estimate?
I have a shoot starting 12 May in China.
I can get the old version now.
I don't want to have to buy twice... Michael Rosco told me the improvements to the IR wavelength cut were minor. Do you agree based on your testing?

Cool, thanks for that. I had heard of people stacking to make 1.8 etc.

Glad I could help bring another solution to market.

The Rosco TruColor IR is a custom dichroic coating on 3.3mm polished flat glass. Tomorrow, I am doing some final testing of the new, deeper IR cut coating and will give Rosco feedback so they may schedule a batch of glass for the dichro process.

Rosco will be making their TruColor IR available through a limited set of dealers at first. I will find out who and post the list here. I might be a dealer myself. Group buy anyone? ;-)

I think the Pancros are great (from what I hear) and Tiffen/Schneider/etc. will be bringing ND+IR to market soon. So, there's a little something for everyone. Screw-on IR filters are already available from several sources.

I'm pretty sure Matt Uhry told me at NAB that he tested the mirrored ND panchro IR's and they did not make much of a difference. The dedicated hot mirror that panchro is coming out with worked great though.

I tried the currently available Tiffen Hot Mirror 82mm screw-on on my Panasonic HPX500 and it barely made any difference with one of the new 1.8 Schneider NDs.

And thanks Michael for all of your efforts.

These are the ones I am talking about, they are available now. Ask for Tom at Pancro, great guy!
