Hey all,

I'm posting a link to a music video we did down here in Monterrey, Mexico for a group called INSITE. It was shot on RED with Zeiss Highspeeds. Pretty much used only the 50mm and the 85mm for the whole shoot. The build was 13, all 4K 2:1 (except for a couple slowmo shots at 2K). Everything was shot to CF and we framed at 2:35.

Director: me
DP: Carlos "Guailo" Lozano
Focus Puller: Felix Cantu

Enjoy!

(I recommend hitting play then pausing until it loads up to avoid jittery streaming. You can also see it full screen, not the best quality, but gives a pretty good idea.)

Thank you. The band knows how to write a good chorus. It goes out on MTV Latin America this week.

Nice DOF

Nice DOF

Love the DOF and the flares add soo much.. great work! any chance of posting a quicktime version?

Sure, I'll be up in a couple days. The quicktime that is.

It was graded in RedCine actually. Kind've a long story why that is, and would bore everyone to death.

Very good video clip.

I like it.

Touch of temperament, sensitivity... viva Mexico...

Much, much better then the most music video clips I saw here were shot on RED.

Wouldn't bore me! I would love to know how to get that wonderful "steely-film" look in RedCine.

How much was a great lens and how much was grading? So much I see still looks like HD, while other clips look like film. Don't want to get back into the debate, but would like to know how to achieve one or the other.

Hahahaha. I've never heard that expression before "steely-film". What does it mean?

Since I'm assuming that you think this particular video looks like "film" and not HD -- hopefully -- then I'll tell you what I did.... Nothing much to be honest -- I got a great cinematographer. ;) RED is a tool, a fantastic one at that, but without a great photographer who knows how to light and expose and has a great eye for cinema, there's not much else you can ask for.

However, the other details involved where definitely the lens', (Zeiss highspeeds) and the fact that we shot the whole thing at 320ASA but went wide open (between T1.3 to 1.9) for the whole thing. Lots and lots of ND's, that's for sure. That soft focus really helps to make digital more "filmlike" for lack of a better term.

And I graded in RedCine cause we couldn't get our external monitor on time for me to do so in Color. As far as grading goes, the truth is I did very, very little. I tried to keep it as natural as possible, only moved the curve around slightly when needed, a tad of Saturation, Contrast, and bit of Green and Yellow to bring out the color palette a bit more. That's about it. The great thing was that the cinematographer shot the whole thing pretty even and it was very easy to match up from shot to shot.

Hope that helps,

Cheers

Yeah, Steely! Just has a metallic quality that I find very appealing.

Wide open looks great. That's probably what does it for me. When you can see really deep, it starts looking more video-like to my eyes.

Really good job.

Cheers,

Jim

i love the how you get those contrast killing flares. Were those a post effect? accidental flares? or were you reflecting/shining lights directly into the lens?

Nice,it needs a good grade.
It kinda worries me, im seeing a lot of Red footage and it now becomes instantly recognizable. It still feels like HD, the only footage i have seen
where it does look more filmic is this. http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0521/...DK30-H.264.mov
The opening shots use Lomos, wide open probably T2ish, these anamorphics
appear more forgiving and not so rezzed out.
Obviously its a personal thing, but those "Ana's" give a more "organic" feel
as opposed to sphericals.
...........just thoughts

Love it. Nice grade. It seems drained, somewhat desaturated. I think it works quite well considering the subject matter (lost love/betrayal). That steely film look is reflected in the cool temperature tones you selected. Great work with the flares; were they in camera or post?

Buen trabajo

-A lot of footage I see seems a bit over colored. Sometimes, a one light is all you really need. I think this is a very good example. But of course...to each his own.

"photographer who knows how to light and expose"

hmm...I was just thinking your DP does not know the RED that well...tons of blown out whites man.
