I really hope Scarlet wont be like Red in which you have to transcode before editing on the PC. I hope the politics are different with scarlet regarding the Apple/Red deal. Scarlet should be as smooth as MXF, drop it on the timeline and go.

I am 100% Mac and feel it is the platform for anyone creative. However it is my understanding from a post from Jim that they are working hard on PC software to help all those who have not come over to the darkside.

I really dont shun mac at all, but i grew up on PC since windows 95. I know it inside out and just runs nicely for me, Scarlet should support both flawlessly.

yes, of course. Which tool do you wanna use, a power drill or a screwdriver. Both should get the job done, you shouldnt have to be forced to use one, its your choice

Of course there's going to be PC support. That's a silly request, and an old one at that. As well as the pc vs. mac argument. I suggest taking that argument elsewhere as that topic has been beaten to death here.

I don't think it's entirely a silly request given Red's current support on the Mac side is much more robust than the PC side. It's good to hear they are working on solutions for both sides as that means it will open the base for Scarlet even wider.

Hopefully this thread will not degrade into a Mac vs PC argument. I have and use both and consider myself platform agnostic.

The request itself isn't silly as I am highly desirous of a native PC solution but it has been mentioned numerous times that there WILL be support on the PC for Red natively. That is the silly part. Being overly repetitive and not using the search function before posting. The workflow for Epic, Red One, and Scarlet is going to be the same so once it gets figured out for Red One then we're golden across all fronts.

I am sure Premiere, Edius and Avid will handle Red files for the PC natively in the future the same way they do now with P2 MXF. It took a while for the latter but now everything is fine. Is common business sense for them.

I've said it before, and will say it again - RED is not available natively to PC applications yet because it's still in active development. The development platform of choice for RED has been OS X (on Intel Macs to boot), so rather than have to spend twice as long coding for two platforms at once as they develop and modify their product and format, they do all the hard work in one system and then once it's all locked off and figured out, that work will be transported across to other platforms.

The REDCODE format is still changing, and it would take much longer to happen if they were coding for a bunch of systems at once.

The current expectation is that the format will be 'finalised' with Build 16 and development for other platforms will follow from there. So we should be pretty close (certainly before Scarlet hits the ground).

I assure you that when Sony was developing XDCAM EX they didn't have it working on all platforms the whole way. They had a platform for development and then ported it all across once they were happy with it. The thing there is, they didn't let anyone in on the development, so when it's launched everything is there - in that development style the RED wouldn't even be at launch date yet... Everything to this point (and only a little beyond hopefully) has been little more than a large-scale public beta test.

wow, thanks for your help but i do know how to use the search function.
I think some research from your part will show that the Red format is not as smooth on the PC side as the Mac. This is not a MAC/PC topic, but the R3D format cant be edited as smoothly on the PC yet. Hopefully when scarlet comes out there will be a solution.

That's very clearly evident to anyone who's seriously working with RED. What else is evident is that RED aren't even close to finished with their development - it's not like they've thrown up their hands and said "no, PCs suck!" in fact it's quite the opposite, they've been saying that Windows support (and even some level of Linux support) will be coming once the product is stable.

It's a redundant request as RED have already committed to providing PC/Windows support for REDCODE. You're asking for something that's already been promised.

I'm glad you know how to use the search function. But looks like you didn't exercise that knowledge. And I am quite aware of the limitations of Red footage on the PC side. We've been actively doing commercials and long form projects on Red since last year. Both on Premiere and Final Cut. The workflow is a little bit slower, yes. But not unbearable. It will only get better.

Goose, Sony doesn't really care much for supporting other camera outputs other than their own, as evidenced by the Panasonic MXF no inclusion on the latest Vegas version. You can edit it with the Raylight plug-in but somehow is not really the same, at least for me. I love Vegas but I am using Edius for all my P2 stuff. Let’s hope that maybe they will support Scarlet’s output natively, who knows.

There will be lots of support for both mac and PC by 2009. Also someone stated Red Ted said they are working on certain tools for scarlet that will make the process easier. I read into that they will automate certain factors as many people who by Scarlet will not know about color theory, rec709, asa ratings ect.

With that said for those pro shooters out there on sony veges you will probably want to look at moving to a industry recognized system it can be Avid, Adobe premier or FCP. I am not saying Vegas won't work but it might really limit yur ability to take full advantage of Scarlet.

ya, thanks, i do realize the cineform tools without the search function. You can take a R3D file and just drop it on a final cut timeline, that should be the same on the PC side. No democracy there, but hopefully that'll change.

Killfilm are you not getting it? It's not "hopefully" it's IT WILL change and it's a subject that has been beaten to death on this forum. That is what they're trying to say.

Chill and have some milk and cookie there will be PC support when your camera arrives.

I think they eventually will enable PC support.

They have to, cause it's too much folk.

If we could edit with the QT proxies in Premiere too, it'd be very nice :).
