I'm getting some mixed responses on whether a $3K Scarlet can actually be used to start shooting.

JJ has indicated it comes with a battery and LCD and I image a couple of SDHC cards.

Cards aside, what else do you need? Is there built in audio/mic.

In other words, what do I need to shoot other than this? And I'm just talking about shooting 3k footage, nothing else

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood this morning but...

WE DON'T KNOW!!! It's not a finished camera, Red hasn't set everything in stone and wont for a while. If you watched the development of the Red One things were always in flux up till the end.

Please people, stop asking questions about this camera for like 6 months. Can we just shut this part of the forum down till then? Please.

Jim has announced his desire to sell a lot of these.

That indicates that he will sell a product that consumers will want to buy, not just filmmakers.

Every video camera in this price range comes with a built in microphone that may not be particularly good quality, but which will record sound.

Every video camera in this price range comes with a battery and charger.

Every video camera in this price range does NOT come with memory cards or tapes.

Therefore, we can conclude that the most likely situation by far is that $2,999 will buy you a camera you can shoot with once you have a CF card.

However, it will NOT include accessories like handles, matte boxes and so on, but you can certainly operate the camera out of the box. How easy or awkward it is to hold in this way has yet to be seen.

I trust Jim to provide excellent quality for the price, but I know many people are likely to need an external microphone simply because sound coming from an on-camera mic is generally poor.

I think there is a 95% chance of what I said being true. Jim likes being at least somewhat unpredictable.

Hope that helps.

Hey Ethan, it's not my fault you are having a bad morning. But if the post bothered you, just ignore it.

My question is legitimate, and perhaps some one knew.

I've confirmed there is a battery and a LCD.

The problem with the release of information from RED is that no body knows what they don't know. That's a little frustrating.

But don't shoot the messenger, please.

Thanks and I hope your day improves. :)

David - my comments were not just directed at you but at this whole ridiculous Scarlet fever that has infected this forum. Everyone is running around in circles asking questions that nobody knows. I've grown weary of all the speculation and wild assumption. Just wait a few months and this camera will begin to take shape, till then we simply don't know much.
It got so crazy around here that on Monday I was reading posts about how people were planning on dealing with the fact that Scarlet wasn't going to have audio. How did they come to this conclusion? Because the mockups didn't show audio inputs. Not because anyone with Red told them there wouldn't be audio, but because they just assumed way too much from some very early mock ups of a 30% planned out camera. Did anyone with half a brain really think Red would release a camera without audio capability? All our questions will be answered shortly, trust that Red isn't going to completely screw the consumer.
Just wait a little while, be patient. You don't have to know everything right now and you wont. It's not like you have to make purchasing decisions today and if you do, then you must buy something else because Scarlet wont be ready for about another year and who knows how long it'll take them to ramp up production after that. I still stand by my suggestion of shutting down the Scarlet sub forum for about 6 months because nothing can be accomplished here till the camera takes shape.

I'm not shooting the messenger, I am however endorsing the idea of nuking the whole damn sub forum.

Nathan. I agree with most of what you've stated.

There is a frenzy here, and my question was directed at what you got for $3K because that is quoted price of the cam.

But it's like saying the new Porsche Speedster goes for $5k. People think that's a great deal, but then in 12 months, the company says you need to spend another $22K for the motor.

I think RED should at least say at the very minimum, $3k will get you this . . . . .

Otherwise, why even give a price?

To be honest, the company has done one of the best jobs of creating hype and expectation.

To me at least, it might be necessary to balance that with a little bit of information related to minimums.

David - I'm not even sure Red knows what you get for the base price right now, it's just too early in the development process. I think the specs, the price, the design, all of it is just ballpark. 6 months, give it 6 months, maybe even 9.

Is someone forcing you to go into the Scarlet forum? If you don't want to read all the speculation and questions regarding Scarlet then just don't go into the Scarlet forum.

Question is why is there so much speculation about a product that is a year away and the developer isn't talking very much.

I agree with Ethan that alot what is going on here is a little bit silly.

That's doesn't mean that all of it is and that we should stay away.

I just had a vision of what will happen the day Red announces Scarlet is ready for sale and people decide to run over to its headquarters to buy it. It will be like black Friday, when people start lining up in front of the stores for the sales at 3 in the morning and when the store doors open all hell breaks loose.
I learned a long time ago that nothing happens before its time. Red is going to be an insanely busy place during the foreseeable future and I am sure the moment they have something official to announce on any of their products they will. Until they know for sure lets do ourselves a favor and relax. Do not speculate, do not use this forum to gang up on them for request after request and stop arguing and bickering. Use the next year for shooting with the equipment you have in your hands right now. By the time Scarlet shows up in a year you will have so much more stuff to put on your resume.

do not use this forum to gang up on them for request after request
That's the big one. If I were Red nothing would tick me off faster. It's ok to make a ton of requests about a piece of gear that is $40,000, but to ask for the moon for $3,000 is selfish. For $3,000 they have the right to do as they please.

One thing's for sure, it doesn't really compete with or against the Red One, and really that's enough of an answer for now I think. I think a lot of people were wondering whether they should hold off buying a Red One until scarlet was revealed - just in case. I imagine that when it is eventually released it will be ready to shoot, it's that kind of camera, but as has been said, that's a long way off yet. And who knows what else will materialise from Red and others in the meantime.
