Welcome to our community

  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We need an owners-only forum!

By invitation and valid serials # IMHO

If you like to add something good as a guest - you'll get access from moderator. And "good" doesn't mean "I always love RED".

Invite + vaild serials + established dp with showreel or IMDB resume?

Let me make sure I understand the concept here. You folks think our community would be better off if it had:

no camera assistants (the people who actually build and maintain the cameras and are expected to be the on set-experts about the technology, its features and its limitations)

no editors
no sound recordists
no labs
no suppliers
no future purchasers
no lens makers
no third party accessory inventors
no custom software writers

Because we know none of those people has anything to contribute.

Hmm.

A few points. First a lot of the negativity around Scarlet was by Red One owners.

2nd point the reason for the ass kissing of Jim on Scarlet was a direct reflection of how negative some of the comments were regarding Scarlet.

And finally I do not want to see a owners only forum because then how will I learn more about the good and the bad of Red and the production pipelines.

Maybe not, but on the other hand, it's not good for the moment IMHO. obviously it's a fine line between contribute/insult/pointless dreaming about future features, etc, etc...

If not open for all, you have to draw the line somewhere...

Open for all to read (of course). You have some point guys, but do you think we are wrong on all accounts?

I personally haven't made up my mind. I'm not that bothered by the current "noise" I know it will quiet down after a while.

But I am open to a quality community that focuses on a positive vibe, honesty and always trying your best. A place where people can evolve and learn from each other. If this has to be at the cost of others, I'm not the right man to tell.

But if you guys wanted, I could pull "high end community thing" together.
Let me know if you really want this....

I agree with some of the points. Having a sub forum to discuses production problems and fixes with no garbage would be great. But I don't agree with restricting it to just owners as I think non owners who work with the gear on a daily basis will have lots of great input.

It is true that this forum is used sometimes as a psy where people talk to themselves and "interesting posts" could be lost in the noise but
that is the high price of trying the democracy ! Here is not China.

I have seen this forum and others like it have these same discussions every year after NAB. There is always lots of uncertainty and speculation coupled with many new users who don't yet fit into our culture.

I think if we all took a few weeks off and let things settle down we would find that the noise mostly goes away on its own. Who's up for some time off? It's not much fun around here without Jim anyway.

I feel the same. There was bound to be some high level of noise here after excitement generated by the NAB announcements. Not to mention Scarlet is attracting many new users with it's attractive price point. But now is probably not the best time to take any drastic decisions. We should see how things evolve a week from now. In the meantime having a few new mods like acehole and the current ones back from NAB should help a lot. If needed, the first step i'd vote for is to make real names mandatory.

Back to testing #1131 aka "Paris" !

well.. less ass kissers around.. not sure if the high officers would like..

IMHO so is the biggest problem all off topic and all cross posting - which leads to unusable search function, which leads to more posting (the only way to find out is to ask in new threads), and so on... There is no end in itself to locking people out, absolutely not (except for the trolls).

The noise/b.s. level always increases before an expected announcement or right after. The rest of the time it is manageable. I think we should interpret the amount of trolling as an indicator of the relative nervousness of the industry. The industry is watching RED closely. Some of us are watching right back at them. I don't want to deny access to anyone because it makes for some non-relevant posts, I actually find it fascinating that there's so much of it. RED is making headway into people's sandbox and they're lashing out. Let's keep all the channels open, but let's not hesitate to call them out when we see them. There's no need to build a brand-new ship, let's fix the one we have.

"The Red User Troll Index today is at 80%, back to you in the studio, Janice."

I'm not suggesting a brand new ship, I'd just like to see an addition to RedUser, a forum where vital information can be exchanged without having to hack our way through a jungle of absolutely worthless posts.

Let's not forget that this is the single point of contact for important announcements about software for our cameras and post processes.

The noise generators have already successfully removed our most important information resource, Jim Jannard. That alone is reason enough to add the owners-only forum.

Look, I'm not suggesting that there are not many valuable contributors who are not owners, but they will continue to post on the open forums. I believe we can greatly benefit from a less noisy forum where we can share the information we all need.

Good shooting and best regards to all,

Leo Ticheli
Director/Cinematographer

Who shall decide what is worthless? I agree 100% on the need!

Leo it seems to be a weak interest for a Reduserpro, which I think is a great idea. I think we have keep on hack our way through the djungle...
